Our defense was designed to funnel everyone into the key where our C contested the shot. So they were contesting WAY more shots than they would in a more traditional man to man.
As a consequence of this strategy, our center would then have to leave his man, leaving their big uncontested for the rebound, then our Center would be out of position to pivot back to guard HIS man .
You can see how the fouls would add up.
Pape is very promising as a true freshman. Still very raw offensively, but having a a long defensive center on the team is always a good thing.
Bear was a pretty good low post threat that mostly had his way against others in our league. Decent enough man up defender too.
The point being, I would want the new coach to have the opportunity to retain existing players. Many of our players have strengths, No player will be complete, but you can still go far if you design a system that utilizes players' strengths and minimizing weaknesses.
