Let's assume Decker is out for next week and maybe 1 more.

If Dalton Sneed were to outperform Palandech in practice this week, would you start him?

Personally I say no for a couple reasons. First asking a kid to make his first career start in front of 70k + fans is rough.

Second If it were only for 1-2 games I don't think you would want to burn the redshirt. Season long injury yes not for 1 or 2 games.

I think you give him as many reps as possible in practice and hope Palandech stays healthy.

All depends on how long Decker is expected to be out. If it's only anticipated to be 1 week then you stick with Palandech. Problem is Palandech may need a backup and redshirt is burned anyway.

I say you burn the redshirt. Regardless of what happens, Decker may need a backup and Palandech has been awful. Sneed will actually benefit from the experience and he'll become more game ready for potential use next year.

Our offense looked truly bad yesterday. We just fell apart without Decker. Some of it was due to skill and size of UCLA and partly due to a highly one dimensional offense. At times it just appeared the team was stunned and out of sorts. On the good side, when UCLA put in 2nd string, offense gained a little composure and looked a little better albeit the inability to complete a pass.

Some of you guys mentioned that it was night and day from Decker to the backups but I don't think I understood just the span between the two. Maybe if Thomson was available it wouldn't appear so bleak and he'd have been another option.

Palandech was the #2 for a reason. He has some skill in the run game but most the week was preparing for his 2 series of use. I think him getting all this time and getting all the first team reps this week we will see some progression and a better plan to use his skill set. He faced a top tier defense and will see another physical defense this week. I hope O'dell and Cotton can get him squared away.

I think the redshirt is only burned if he plays. Suiting up is ok as long as he doesnt play.

If Sneed have a better arm than Palandech, I say burn that RS.

Suiting up doesnt burn it. Has to see the field. Sneed has been dressed on the sideline relaying the plays both weeks so far.

If they anticipate Decker missing anything more than three or four games I would very much consider making Sneed the starter over Palandech. At best Palandech is one-dimensional, and at worst he's flat out awful. He's really not the future in terms of QB play and is only the backup by way of default since we're short on QBs. Depending on whatever Decker's situation is the decision comes down to either "wasting" a redshirt year vs. "wasting" a valuable opportunity and stretch of game experience for a potential future QB.

Despite playing against a ranked opponent, Palandech throwing 15 passes for a total of 4 yards, along with a hideous pick 6, and also a fumble turnover, and an additional fumble that he fell on himself, is a performance that screams "find someone else".

My impression of Palandech from the beginning has been he's a better WR prospect than a QB at this level.

Hopefully Decker will be back quickly. But if he's out long-term, I would think about developing Sneed right away.

Assuming Decker's injury is minor, do you hold him out of the Michigan game so as to not risk further or a more serious injury and so he is healthy for the Idaho State, and more importantly, the UNR game? I was worried about UNLV staying healthy thru the first 3 games.

If an extra week off will get him at or close to 100% for Idaho State and beyond , then yes you dont risk him at Michigan unless an emergency situation pops up.

I guess we will find out tuesday at the press conference how severe his injury is.

Its a really tough call. It really depends on how long Decker will be out. If ot is only 1-2 games I think you stick with Palandech. If its worse say 4-6 games I think you consider putting Sneed on the field.

Wasting a year of eligibility for 1-2 games doesn't sense to me.

But if its a longer term injury I really think you take a look at what you have in Sneed.

How terrible that Decker got hurt on the play he did. Not some big hit by UCLA... just a freak injury on a non-contact, first-down earning run. Hope it is not serious, but I feel like non-contact leg injuries are always bad news.

Looked like he just pulled something. He was able to take a couple lame steps before going down. Didn't look like anything popped or ripped.

Pretty much all Hamstring injuries are non contact, and the majority of ACL injuries as well.

Interesting conversation. it sounded from reports that Sneed had a pretty long ways to go to be ready in pre season. He may be the answer long term, but would he really be better than Palendech this year?

It hurt that it seemed that Palendech only had a few set plays for him to be out there, which really limited our options when he had to be out there extended minutes. They would undoubtedly increase his playbook if he were to be the starter.

If Decker is thought to be out just a week or 2. then I think you sit Sneed. If its more and Sneed truly gives us a better chance to win NOW, then play Sneed.

Being a true freshmen he had a lot of ground to make up heading into fall. Guys like Rosen starting as true freshmen tend to be the exception not the norm.

You are right though, they probably have a very limited playbook for Palandech at this point. Hopefully with a full week of getting starters reps they can find out what he is most comfortable/capable of running.

The odds of us beating Michigan with either QB is very low. If Decker is out for a while you have to start Palandech and have Sneed ready to go as we don't have any other healthy, eligible QBs right now. If Decker is ready to come back soon I say leave the redshirt on and try to get out of Ann Arbor as healthy as possible and prepare for a stretch of winnable games. The Michigan game is a cash grab--let's try to not get a bunch of guys hurt or ruin everyone's psyche for the rest of the year.

For me, it all comes down to 2 related questions that Coach Sanchez and his staff have to answer:

1- How good is Sneed and does he have the potential to lead this team for 2-4 years?

2- How good are your prospects (Jack Smith, for starters) and potential recruits?

Let's not forget that Sneed is the lone holdout recruit from the Hauck era. If you don't see a long-term future from him, why not throw him out there and see what he can do and if he's better than KP now?

Rosen, on top of being elite, was at UCLA in the spring and summer which helps a lot in getting comfortable with the playbook before fall camp.

Losing Decker hurts the team a dramatic amount I think we all can see. Its a shame that it has to be this bad. Bummer that we don't have more depth right now. The comments online for the RJ and the Sun were brutal. People are down right crazy in this town and just have nothing better to do these days.

Save yourself the aggravation of going on the RJ and Sun comment sections. I would say probably 1/3 of the people on there are professional trolls, who post on threads regardless of topic just to infuriate people. Another 1/3 have never even been to a Rebel game but for some reason feel the need to post negative comments. The rest are actually on there looking for honest discussion/debate. The fact they shut down the comments section for awhile shows how useless it has become.

Yeah, we need to pull the Rebel out of his name. Judging by his demeanor he probably graduated from that overglorified truck stop up north.
