CDM Era: Transfer Portal and Recruits Thread

I am wondering how many TE's might be DE's. Somewhere it said Hall was a TE but he is a DE.
College is not a place to learn how to learn, that is high School. College should be a place you learn how to grow as a person or player.

Agree completely with all of this. How are posters making this something to worry about? Having two quality QBs (from major programs) is important for depth.

Orji is not a very good passer. Sluka had a better completion percentage vs FCS competition than Orji did vs HS.

Michigan was the only school that really offered him a shot at QB..

Most wanted him to move positions.

Nothing to worry about but Orji needs a lot of work as a passer.

You definitely gamble on a guy like that with his athleticism.

As for him moving down in competition. Not saying this to be snarky but doesn't always mean anything. The Utah Tech QB was an Iowa transfer.

We've got options and that's not a bad thing.

That’s true about the Utah Tech guy. I forgot about him. He did lead a ranked Iowa to a bowl game. But he also had a 48% completion rate at Iowa and also at Utah Tech. The step down didn’t do anything for him. At least Colandrea maintained 62% through 2 years at Virginia.

Orji seems like a shorter second coming of Armani Rogers, but with a less accurate arm. Fun fact about Orji, one of his brother played with Hajj at Campbell. There is a chance Alex knows Hajj. I wonder if that was also a factor in his decision.

Colandrea, from all of one game watching him, has decent accuracy. His decision making was horrific. Again one game. But I can see where Mullen wants the accuracy and think he can work the decision making into him.

Someone asked before and I don’t remember…was Virginia’s line just total ass? Was he under duress every play and had to sling it to avoid taking a a sack?

You guys worry to much about what his passing % will be and not how he will be used in the offense. Hes not coming in to be the starter. Hes coming for the exact same role he had at Michigan with a guy at OC/HC thats been known to develop players into being QBS. I wouldnt worry about him being "Armani Rogers", hes not starting next year. Hes going to be used in the Redzone, on short yardage situations and to jumpstart the offense. I imagine he will be used in various spots and wanted to join a team that will be competing in the playoffs and has a coach that has developed QBs into high caliber players. Dan wanted him, or he wouldnt have reached out to have him come on a visit.

I'm with you. I don't know what that conversation looked like between them, but obviously, Mullen has a plan for him, and Alex liked the sound of that plan.

Even if we take the most unfavorable view of the financial situations for staying in the MWC, I don't know that at this stage in the conference realignment puzzle you can afford to not have full voting rights or put yourself on the hook for a 30 million dollar exit fee.

I think the PAC media deal will be at least 40-50% more than ours, but the difference between the two sums after we settle all the accounts will be much smaller and I don't want to be in a place where I don't get a full vote and they only offered me scraps after their date decided they weren't leaving their boyfriend. Maybe that's hubris (and everyone's position until we know is just conjecture), but I think that betting on ourselves and betting that the conferences aren't done realigning is still the smart money right now. Having no exit fee might make all the difference in getting into a P4 when the next shuffle occurs.

We have a gambling spirit and I’m all for it. Also, the exit fee may be (one of) the main limiting factor in bringing Tulane and Memphis into the PAC.

Imagine not having that obstacle. We can tolerate not earning the full amount of the B12 and not be crapping our pants about how we are going to afford to make the move.

I think that this was a solid piece of negotiating our new deal with the MWC.

Whoever replaced Coleandra at the end of the season vs a worse opponent was even worse statistically. So yeah, I’d say it was the line that was ass.

When your playing top tier programs with a line that is ass, your going to have to throw the ball quickly and make snap decisions that may or may not be good.

As for Orji, he will probably be competing for a starting spot, I think that’s why he signed. All he wants is an opportunity and Mullen has the coaching chops to help quarterbacks and Mullen will work on Orin’s mechanics. Sometimes it’s a tweak here and there that helps.

For example, running quarterbacks tend to lean on their back leg which delays the weight transfer to complete an accurate or on time throw. Could be the way he grips the ball, shoulder angle, release point etc.

If you can get Orji to be reliable, UNLV is a very dangerous team similar to what Michael Vick did for Virginia Tech. That’s the kind of potential here but there’s a lot of work that will have to be done.

Lamar Jackson was a 3 star/4 star HS recruit with a career 47.1% completion rating... Speedy QB prospect but not a strong passer.
He never peaked above the 60% completion rating, but still managed to win the Heisman and then be in the top 3 of the Heisman the following year because of the threat he could take off and run...
Hes had a pretty good NFL career since... Sometimes things just click when a QB who has the tools clicks with the offense...

This is an excellent pick up. 4* freshman buried in the depth chart coming here as a sophomore, #30 WR in the country. RWIII scenario repeated.
The WR’s coming in indicate that Mullen plans to throw the ball. There more than likely will be a couple 1000 yard WR’s in scarlet and gray!

But he needs to get some DL in here too.
He had two on visits recently that went elsewhere so he’s definitely looking, so get it done “home run” hire!

I have not seen 1 impact player sign yet. Not including the QB(on fence). Everyone that has signed were not starters. Most minimal contributors. I know they were probably playing behind some top tier talent ,but we lost some impact players and if they dont come close to what we lost it could be a down year even with the easier schedule. Hopefully talent evaluation is on point and we dont skip a beat . hopefully we gain a couple.

For perspective..

Jackson Woodard was a walk on at Arkansas who only played special teams. Ricky. White had 1 big game at Michigan State. Jacob DeJesus played Juco with minimal portal offers.

We aren't going to land highly productive P4 guys. We can land back ups and hope they can be the next Ricky White and Woodard.

We’ve punched above our weight in the NiL world this off season. We could be like WSU with a bunch of addons from South Dakota state. We need to trust our staff is identifying winners. In Dan Mullen we trust!

We're not Alabama... we replaced a bunch of our departures with P4 talent, not G5 or FCS castaways. These are former 4 star players who had roles at SEC, Big 12, ACC programs. Not just former walkons, but guys who were sought after and are now wanting PT rather than waiting for it.

All our top guys are always question marks elsewhere. QB is one of the few "contributors" we get.

We just got two DL. I think that our head coach reads these boards.

With the increased traffic from the staff, Joe can afford to keep Joe Force 1 operational for a few more years.

I saw that, lol!

Mullen the “home run” hire is building this team the right way, I will take P4 guys instead of a bunch of G5 leftovers any day! But if the G5 guys are brought in, I welcome them too, Mullen has his eye on them for a reason!

The size of some of these guys is nice, now they coach them up!
