I don’t know how many remember Martrel Johnson from Durango HS in the early 2000’s. He was a bit undersized for the type of game he excelled at, but when he was young in HS, he showed some stuff. Very tough, never quit, physical, just got after it. It looked like he was going to be a decent D1 player, mid major or above, mostly because of height limitations. By his senior year, he slowed. Badly. Just looked out of shape and easily winded. But that’s because he was sick without knowing it. Very sick. He’s still fighting the myriad of issues today, but to say he’s had it extraordinarily difficult is an understatement. He was a good dude too, I watched him and Lamar Falley quite frequently at Durango, UNLV was watching both, so I did too.
This article is a couple years old. He’s still alive. But sad, sad story. This is why I get disappointed with talented players that take that talent for granted.
