It had been mentioned that Arroyo would forfeit some of his buyout money if he were to take another job.

Is that the case with some of these recently fired candidates?

Herman's buyout over 15 mil, and Ed O's was over 17 mil.

If so that may be a hard sell, if they also would have to forest free money

Im not sure I understand what you are asking but If Im am, normally it works like this. For simple math if a coach is owed $1million by former school after being fired and takes a job at a new school for $500k, then former school only need to pay him the difference which in this scenario would be $500k.

The buyout $$ is based on years left on contract, so If the coach had two years left on the contract when fired and didnt take a job for 2 years then the coach would be paid entirely from the former school.

The only time a new school actually pays the buyout is if a coach leaves his old school for a new school before the contract was up, so say Nick Saban has a $15 million buy out if he leaves for another school, then the other sschool must pay the entire buyout to the school they are hiring their new coach away from.

Herman had 2 years left on his UT contract so over 10 mil owed.

Not sure how many years for coach O.

So herman may still jump at a job that he would basically take for free, just because he is young. Coach O may more be likely to stand pat perhaps retire.

Herman's buyout was $15 Mil. Not sure if it counts as it isn't a coaching job per se, but he took an advisor job with the Chicago Bears 2021. Not working 2022.

I believe Herman has 1 year left on his buyout. He started with 3 years left on his contract and now has 1. He was owed about 5.1 million per year by Texas.

If UNLV or any school hires him to coach next season, his salary will be deducted from what UT owes him, it’s not paid for by the new school. So if UNLV pays him $2 million, Texas will owe him $3.1 million.

Yes, it’s basically working for free, because unless he takes a job paying more than 5.1 million he makes the same from his couch as he would working, but the longer you are away the more irrelevant you become and less the valuable you are.

Which also highlights why coaches out of our league may inquire .. a smokescreen “good faith effort” in trying to get employment.

That’s the thing, they can say I interviewed but the salary offer was no where near where I need to be, and it checks the box that they made that good faith effort.

Or maybe there is no one knocking on his door to pay him $5 million a year so you go out the last year that Texas is paying you, make the $5 million some paid by UNLV the rest by Texas and bet on yourself that after working for a couple years at 2 million that those willing to pay $5 million do come knocking?

I meant he had 2 years left of his 3 year contract since it hasn't quite been 2 years since he was fired. But it will be in January. The buyout was 15.4 mil so im not sure how that is scaled.
But yes, something north of 5 mil.
I wonder if they could do something like DeShawn Watson's contract where all money is back loaded. But im guessing that is not really "good faith" is it?
By calling games on TV he can still be close to the game, but it does feel like it would be tough to to agree upon a number. Also, the idea that otherwise will come calling with deep pockets is valid.
I have heard him speak at a corporate team building event here in Houston. He was impressive. I do think he is hungry to get back into coaching. And I do think he was impressed with our facilities, he seemed sincere when talking about it on our broadcasts. I also thinks he like many of our pieces.

But I worry he is just too rich for our blood
