Line ‘em up: Predictions and Game Thread Boise

Cpuld it be that Boise State is still better than we are?
They are. Without a doubt. Just discipline, execution, focus and poise. Throw in how good their lines are. They’re simply better than us.

I don’t blame the coaching. Odom has had to shatter a faulty foundation and rebuild from ground up. No slow growth here. Asking us to be in the CFP in two years after being bottom 5 for 40 years is asking a lot yet we knocked at the door.

If we get down to coaching, the offensive play calling is pretty poor, imo. We utilize tiny portions of the field, we get little spread. We don’t utilize certain players. It’s predictable most of the time.

Then we have a quarterback who can run well but is afraid to throw the ball.

I’ve already tired of Marion’s “Go-Go” offense. It smells like a brand with little substance. All hat and no cattle. Just a variation of the RPO but with very little to offer in the red zone. When the 85 yard run ended at the 5 yard line I immediately told my friend we won’t score. He was shocked to see what happened. How many times this year have only got a Field goal with 1st & goal? I’m sorry but after a full season that’s on the OC. I hope he takes another job and allows Odom to bring in an OC with more substance to his game plan.

You mean Thompson? He definitely was open maybe not a TD unless a perfect in stride throw but would have been a big play.
I need to find the clip. They triple teamed White. Nobody was within 10 yards of the receiver to the right of White. They knew Williams tendencies. If he could of read his progressions better we would of had a chance to win.

Not sure ,but looking at the time line it may just be trolling. 622 pm. Probably about halftime. I suspect IF he leaves it will be before the bowl game. IN the next 24 hours we find out IMO.
Okay, it said "Hey Reb". Like, UNLV got a commitment or he's leaving.

Definitely they have a better O line and a better QB. That is really the key difference right there. I didn’t like Brennan‘s play calls this game but overall he’s done a good job here. The result was more about the players than the coaching.

If this is true, thank goodness!
He didn’t suck I didn’t like his play calls this game and at several points in the year. But we also had one of the highest scoring teams in the country for back to back seasons, which is something we have never seen in our history so deserve some credit for that.

So the next question is, who do we play in the LA Bowl? Most in the media say it will be 6-6 Cal, but I think it’s gonna be against 6-6 USC. If not for anything else, the storyline of Maiava going against his former coach and teammates. Plus attendance wise, it’s regionally accommodating for both schools.

I'm just still not sure i can say that. I would like to see a game against Boise where we aren't beating ourselves and just completely forget how to play football. It would be different if they play the way we know they can and we just get beat. Then there's whatever that sh!t show was last night. That's why I'm still mad. The last 3 games against them it's like we turn into complete morons that have forgotten how to play. We don't do it with anyone else, just Boise. Just once I would like to play them straight up. I honestly think we would be able to beat them and beat them soundly.

We had a similar problem with basketball and SDSU in the MWC championship tournament under Lon/Dave and never cracked that code... better teams, just did dumb stuff vs them that went away from what got you there and never were able to take that step into "our time"..

Not sure if i agree with them being "better". For 3 straight games against them we haven't been able to play to our ability without getting in our own way and just playing stupid. So we won't know for sure if they really are "better".
I agree that the offensive play calling needs to seriously be overhauled with emphasis on red zone conversion. Still a ton of work to do.

Seems to me Boise beat us soundly. Two games in a row against them we got beat in the trenches while their QB made the plays that mattered while our QB could not both bc he was constantly hurried and bc he couldn’t hit open receivers. Not being able to come thru in the big game is also on the team (including the coaches) whether it’s dumb plays, penalties, “bad luck” call it what you want but it adds up to a team that is just a player or two away from winning these games while the other team (Boise, Kansas in last year’s bowl) was. That’s called a better team and I can accept that. We’ve come a ridiculously long way in a short amount of time. It’s understandable that we’ll struggle a bit when the competition takes a pretty solid leap. As long as we keep Odom (pay the man!) and continue to raise our recruiting this program with its facilities and the gravitas of Vegas will continue to get better. We’re in a great position right now and I hope Odom and staff can take full advantage of the momentum around the program and land some game-changers in the portal and we take another step next season (win the MWCC) and ultimately get that P4 invite. LFG!!

Boring and boring… it sucks that after such a good season our best option is playing some 500 team. Even with the USC name attached, I don’t see us getting much mileage out of beating them if we do. Absolutely no one will care about Cal. It would be nice to face an opponent that people will actually watch on TV.

I don't know, discipline is a team attribute. It's entwined into team quality as much as talent. They're certainly "better" than we are, I don't think there's any doubt. Their lines are much "better" (that's where most games are won and lost), their discipline is "better", they have a Heisman candidate runner ... I think they are definitely better than we are. That doesn't mean you can't beat them, I think they're close enough, right now I think Boise beats us 7 of 10 times on a neutral field. But it means you need to play near mistake free football to beat them ... we don't do that often. They do.

Yeah, bit of a letdown to face a .500 team if that’s the case, but if we were to beat USC by a good margin that will absolutely benefit the program. Regardless of record USC is a huge brand and a strong win against them would continue to elevate the program and raise recruiting.

So, while i was miserable in the moment, going into this game I knew that Boise was still the better team (there's 3 games in a row where they played disciplined nearly mistake free football and we didn't) but we had a puncher's chance. Unfortunately, our game plan was 'they'll never expect us to come out on offense and try to do the same thing that didn't work in the first half last time'. Marion is a really solid offensive coordinator from a scheme stand point, but against a disciplined team that's disguising what they're going to be running having an offense predicated on making pre-snap decisions to make your read is a lot tougher. Boise also does a really good job instead of worrying about our unbalanced backfield attacking it on the unbalanced side. We never really saw any tunnel or bubble screens, no draw game, etc that take the bit out of a blitz heavy teams jaws and make them react. Our offense did look better in the second half, but part of that was they were just trying to take away the deep strike (which they again did a really good job on).

There was a thread asking what we needed to do to win the game yesterday. I said:

For us to Win:

* Get out to a lead early and make Boise throw.
* Contain rushing attack--both Jeanty and Madsen.
* More touches to the RBs, especially RPO and screen game against the blitz
* Fewer high risk splash play attempts--25 degrees isn't vertical passing weather. The pigskin is hard and slippery and fingers and hands are numb and less flexible.
* Play disciplined and have fewer penalties
And we basically just did the opposite of all 5 of those.

It may look bad on the outside but if we get smoked by Cal or USC what will that say?

I’ll be curious what the TV ratings come in at but I bet it will be our highest of the season. It’s disappointing that we got a national TV game and didn’t really show up until the fourth quarter.

Boise St had announced attendance of 36k if I recall.

After all the attendance smack-talk Boise fans made about UNLV fans not making the trip, they didn’t even sell-out their own stadium.

That would be worse, but I really don’t see that happening.
I hope you’re right because I see it the other way, those 2 teams are bigger, stronger and faster than we are. We all know how that plays against us, not to mention it’s a bowl game!

I vote for USC. Once again you have managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory-defeat/blue feet firmly implanted in Blue Moon's Odom.

Yeah but they are both 6-6 for a reason and it isn’t because Cal faced a murderers row of opposition. USC played a good schedule but they also have bad losses.

If SMU loses Boise is likely the three seed. If not, and they play ASU, they’re gonna have their hands full. Playing very well last half of the season.

As Parcells said you are what your record says you are and at this point Boise is a better team. I know what you mean that if we don’t kill ourselves with mistakes we win both games, but false start and holding penalties in the red zone not once but twice is why their O line is better than ours. Killing ourselves with penalties makes them better because they do not.

…and those penalties occur in part bc our OL is trying to get an advantage over their better DL.

Maybe we can remove a little money with a nice class action against Boise ticket office! We do have a bunch of UNLV graduates from the law school. Nice way to reduce their funding!
Just to make it clear, ticket sales for this game were handled by the MWC not Boise State. Boise Season Ticket Holders didn't get their normal seats because of this mess. Me included!
