Who had the better squad in Year 2? Keon, Nesby, Dickel... vs this year's squad?

A lot of similarities here: Both struggled the first year in a crappy conference and both had solid recruiting classes. Both went the JUCO route, and brought in players who needed time to develop. Biggest difference I see is one team moved to a tougher conference (WAC). That WAC team went to the NIT.

The difference will be in coaching and developing players. Menzies will be better at both imo

I hope you're right. Bayno had quite a few who came in with a lot of hype and didn't quite pan-out the way we would have liked. Ike & Greedy come to mind off the top of my head. I guess that serves a reminder not to get too infatuated with the stars/rankings.

Dickel though.... I got a real kick watching him play. Good or bad... what a hoot.

One of my proudest moments in my UNLV life was when Dickel lead us the the WAC championship and the chants of MVP MVP MVP reigned down upon him at the Thomas and Mack. Was absolutely electric!!!!!! I just sat back and basked in the glory!

At least preseason, that's an uncanny comparison. If this team ends up being anything like that team - wait, not sure I like where that was headed.

It's funny. On confidential, two or three months ago, I painted that they are very comparable. Or that Menzies should be able to do in year two what Bayno did in year two. Because the situations are very similar and all it takes is one good recruiting class. I was blasted pretty good because that as a standard was deemed too lofty by most of our fans. I thought it was spot on. Of course this was way before our recruiting class was unveiled but I knew about McCoy....

It's not a make or break thing, but we should see a very similar bump between seasons. This year's schedule/conference will be/is expected Ronnie easier so that should help. Plus Menzies has a decade of HC experience whereas Bayno was green as hell.

I'd be pretty satisfied with a 20+win/NIT appearance season. It's a big jump. Of course, expectations tend to morph as a season goes on.

His biggest jump, I think, was sophomore to junior. And still improvement from JR to SR. Quality D1 PG without an NBA bone in his body.
If I remember right, did he lead the nation in assists his senior year. Him and Mark wade similar point guards. Pass first and they sure could pass!

That would be awesome if we have 20+ win season and a NIT bid, but of course I would be happier with a march madness bid! I'm really excited about watching Mooring and Jordan Johnson playing together. Hopefully Johnson is the real deal as a point guard. I believe he is, but we will see!

Thought that was Doug Gottlieb at OSU - Dickel #2?

Among the casual fans of UNLV and sports fans in general that I chat with at work, there is a lot of buzz about the program. Its exciting - I am so relieved that there is at least hope again. I'm not asking to be National Champs or even second round NCAA winners; just be competitive and stomp out Wyoming and the other middle of the pack MWC teams.

Spring hopes eternal, right?
