to make the threads more navigable, there are two ways to reply.
If you click reply under a person's message, it will quote that message in your post and the poster will get a notification that you responded to them.
If you don't do that, it kinda just joins the general theme of the particular thread. It can look misplaced if you were actually responding to a specific post or point.
I'm saying this because there are a lot of threads where it looks like they could or might be replying to me, but I'm not sure if they are.
