Armani Rogers Update - 2 days and counting

Fresno's Zack Greenlee transferred the other day so it's a down to the wire decision.
Stanton is the likely starter but Rogers should be a three year starter if he redshirts and two year starter if he sees spot duty right away.
QB health can always be a question mark for any team so he will be in good possession to be the next man up right away.

Rogers will most likely choose UNLV Thursday. He is best friends with Jericho Flowers, a cornerback on the team, and has also been convinced that he can start his freshman year.

I doubt he starts year one. I think Stanton wins the job and Rogers red shirts. He would have a much better chance to compete for and possibly win the job as red shirt freshmen.

Stanton has physical maturity, the advantage of coming in for spring practice, and overall experience.

Love Armani's upside, but my guess is the plan is to red shirt him this year let him compete next year. Even if Stanton holds the job for two years Armani will enter his red shirt sophomore campaign as the favorite to win the job.

Intetesting info on he and Jericho though.

What to do in Fresno..

What to do in Vegas...

This shouldn't be a hard decision

It sounds like a tight race between Las Vegas and Fresno. Armani really looks the part. There's so many positive things happening at UNLV right now under Coach Sanchez and this kid would be another huge pickup and a fun player to watch. Really hope he becomes a Rebel.

We are on the rise. He can be part of something special. This is Vegas, nuff said. Fresno has been stagnant. After he realize his career is going no where and looks around him then he will figure out he is in dump place called Fresno. Which scenario sounds appealing?

Even without Greelee its still a three man race at Fresno that could go anyway. Fresno has some talent at qb. Two of them got hurt, but they're better now. It could be anyone there. We know after Stanton graduates or if he gets hurt that number two on the list isn't Palandech or Sneed. We're in deep ${#* if Palandech is taking the majority of the snaps on a non designed play.

It will be interesting to see how many reps Sneed gets in the spring. The staff knows what they have in Palandech, a nice change of pace guy, who can make plays outside the pocket. I think they will want to see how Sneed has progressed while getting Stanton up to speed.

I honestly like Sneed. He has a nice touch on the ball and is fairly accurate. I think his arm is light years ahead of Palandech, though it isn't very strong. He can run for short yards if he needs to, but he's not as quick Palandech. He'll never blow anyone out of the water, but should Stanton go down, he can keep the ball moving. If Palandech is a pace changer, Sneed is a true back up.

I don't think Palandech will ever win the QB job, but I would not be shocked if he is able to secure the back up job.

Caleb Herring had his struggles early on, but everything seemed to slow down and click for him his senior year.

I think the ideal 'dream' scenario for us would be the following. (Assuming we get Rogers)

Stanton wins job out right this year. Palandech or Sneed make strides solidifying the #2 spot. Rogers shows a ton of potential in the fall, but gets red shirted.

Next year because we are coming off a successful season, it is Stanton's job to lose. Stanton once again wins job but Rogers makes a strong case during camp. Rogers is elevated to the #2.

Two years from now Rogers is a 20 year old red shirt sophomore and enters camp clear cut starter with 3 years of eligibilty.

Totally agree. The question is whether Armani is willing to sit for 2 years. Patience is a lot more common in football than bball (high school bballers think they could compete with NBA guys immediately...I don't think many/any HS footballers think they're ready to compete at that level) but guys can still be persuaded by the thought of playing immediately.

As @run'em_out'a_here said above, the strongest elements in our favor are Las Vegas vs. Fresno, and trajectory of the teams. The battle of the cities is really no battle at all. And FSU program seems to be declining, or at best, stagnant. Our program shows a lot of signs of being on the upswing.

All true. Fresno can also throw out a pretty impressive list of former Qbs. Carr brothers, Dilfer.

I always hate to try and predict what decision an 18 to 20 year old will make.

Gut feeling, but I think we get him.

It really looks like he is 50/50 on his decision and it could go either way based on unknown factors. One thing that I did note is that several additional members of the coaching staff have just started to follow him in the last 1-2 days (I think this may have been done to show him that the coaching staff really wants him at UNLV). If anyone is on twitter and can follow him and even send a message it could help tip things in the direction of UNLV if he has not made up his mind. I have notice he has re-tweeted messages that people sent him and they seem to be almost all from UNLV fans.

I can't see Palandech accepting the move to WR and the team has too many underclassmen to see him make an impact at the position. The staff seemed to make a commitment to develop him as a quarterback last season and he is more likely to transfer than make the position switch.
Only thing that makes me nervous about Stanton was how far he dropped down Nebraska's depth chart and his high number of carries that were greater than the next 3 rushers on the team. He had a system completely developed around his skills at Saddleback but he may need time to develop the patience needed in a more balanced style of offense.
Rogers would be a great just in case guy to have on the roster and could be the starter by the end of the year.

There was a coaching change after Stanton arrived at Nebraska, he was also coming off of a knee injury early in his career there as well. These things could have contributed to his not performing well.

There was an interview with him where he stated he never got comfortable there and it was one of the reasons he didn't perform well on the field. I think he will fit in fine with this team offense that should (hopefully) have improved O line play, More "heavy" sets with multiple TE's/H/Fullbacks to set up play action throws to Boyd, Keys, Presley, Woods, Price, Holt Kanteman etc.

Palandech already had one year at JC and played a year here. If he transfered to a D1 he has to sit a year. Not sure where he might think his options would be better. One team or offensive scheme I think he would be productive in, is what New Mexico runs.

As for a move to WR, probably not, but he is a good athlete and if he isn't the #1 or #2 QB, the staff might look for ways to get him on the field.

I am pretty sure the staff will tweak the offense to fit Stanton's skill set. They wouldn't have brought him in if they didn't think they could make it work.

Good point. The QB spot is wide open. Signing Stanton was critical due to how thin the position was but if Rogers comes on board it could become interesting immediately depending on how Stanton performs. Stanton obviously has experience and JC success but he's still unproven here, with only two years of eligibility. Sneed is unknown still and Palandech's skill set is limited. Rogers would immediately beef up the position and if Stanton struggles or is inconsistent, Rogers possibly could compete sooner than expected.

As for Palandech, I don't see him playing anywhere close to the number of reps he got last year. I could be completely wrong but unless he makes drastic improvement on decision-making and passing he'll need to either switch positions or transfer in order to see the field. Otherwise he'll hold a clipboard. Perhaps the staff is/was committed to developing Palandech as a QB but he was going to play QB last season whether they were committed or not. They had to based on the circumstances. Signing Rogers, if we get him, would be big, and an important piece to this strong recruiting class.

Rogers isn't going to Fresno. They already have Quentin Davis from St. John Bosco committed, and took SO Chason Virgil as a mid-year transfer last year when Mississippi State wanted him to grayshirt. Virgil started for FSU until he broke his collar bone vs. Utah.

Plus there are two other capable QB on the squad...WVU transfer JR Ford Childress and SO Kilton Anderson who started the last couple of games for FSU during the season.

Best case, the soonest he'd see the field is 2-3 years, and he'd have to beat out Quentin Davis for the gig. He will be a Rebel.

Good take.

I think if Stanton plays well it still might be 2 years before Rogers sees the field here as well.

It's fundamentally stupid to play a true freshman QB. Fresno found that out last year...even as a transfer who came in for spring, the game was still too fast for Virgil, and he had not bulked up enough to put up with the hits he would take and it showed (broken collarbone).

Johnny Manziel, Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota, Derek Carr...some of the finest college QB in the last 5 years...none of them started as true freshmen...they all redshirted at least one year.

If Rogers is smart, no matter where he goes, he will embrace the opportunity to get better by redshirting.

Exactly

With some small exception, redshirting every incoming freshman is ideal if the depth is there, whether they play QB or anything else. Hypothetically if Stanton gets injured, the QB position is still very wide open again. In that case I think Sanchez would still try to preserve Armani's redshirt and play either Sneed or Palandech, even if Armani is the best of those 3.

Similar to last year. They wanted to preserve Sneed's red shirt, despite Palandech's struggles.

Sneed wasn't a clear cut better option over Palandech coming out of fall camp. He wasn't ready to be a starter making it a waste to lose his redshirt when he would likely have not played much.

Yep.

Also Decker's injuries were always a week to week thing. Had he been out for 4-6 games maybe they would have considered it. It would have been a mistake in my opinion to break it for one game and then have Blake come back and start the next week.

I know this isn't what this thread is about... but can we all just take a second to ponder on what the 2015 season could have been with a healthy Decker....

... is that a bowl game I see? ....

Alright, that's good. Carry on.

It was a possibility but I think one game he got hurt getting off the team bus. That game was at home.

In all honesty I think our lack of depth would have cost us regardless. I think if everything went our way last season 5 wins was our cap. I know that was bowl eligible last year but I think in terms of 6 wins.

True. I think 5 games were guaranteed (add SJSU and FSU to the 3 we got). And if we were in bowl contention, I think we get the victory at WYO to end the season.

I am looking forward to the day when we aren't lamenting over how we would have made a bowl if our QB with a career 1/1 TD to INT ratio wasn't hurt.

He is in quiet mode. Hasn't retweeted anything since yesterday. Usually if tweeted something about coming to Vegas, he'd retweet. He hasn't done so today. Guess it's to be expected. Thought he would have announced by now.
