The root cause goes back a couple of staffs and flows through Bobby's staff. It's quite simple. They created and propagated a culture of poor academics.
HCTS is making quite a bit of head way in flipping that culture around but it will take some time. He knew this from day one and that's why he brought in a staff that would emphasize academics. Bringing in the coaches that he did have made a difference and the new hire adds to this. We now have three coaches who come from the program that leads the entire nation in Academic All Americans by a substantial number. Now we need more academic support to combine with the staff that we have being lead by HCTS, and that's how you turn that culture around.
Coach Sanchez has only had one recruiting class that would have registered and attended school. He is responsible for essentially only about 20% to 25% of the current roster.
It is something to monitor going forward.
Well, said.It's absurd to think that academics can be improved much in just one year when the players being graded have dug themselves into a hole for 4 to 3 years already. It will take more than just a coupe of seasons to get out of the prior poor academic shadow and it was a deep and dark shadow.
Plus, one should note the players he brought in recently like Stanton. Just because Johnny was a JUCO doesn't mean that he had bad grades. He still aspires to become a surgeon after his football days are over. Most recently, HCTS just brought in a LBer who was 1st Team Academic All Big Ten. I guarantee ya'll that it's a heck of a lot harder to do that in the Big Ten than in the MWC.
However, as I wrote earlier, we also need to commit to improve academic support. We had the worst academic support in the conference when HCTS took over. It has improved but we still are woefully low in academic support compared to Power 5 programs, which is the level we should aspire to reach.

Academics are the doorway to prosperity, important no doubt. But what we need are fast athletes.
I hope his goals get sidetracked due to a 15-year NFL career.
Not sure what you are disagreeing with? I don't know where the story is, but they came out with the football gpa and it had a huge jump since coach Sanchez took over. The program barely missed being put on probation (2014-2015) due to grades and overall academic scores under coach Hauck while the gpa jumped by almost half a point in the first year under Sanchez.
Coming out of Fall 2014, we lost 15 APR points because of grades/suspensions/ect. This year, we lost 3.
