Fired at GT and picked up by nobody last year. Why would a coach who had success getting to the NCAA tournament 5 times in both G5 and P4 conferences end up signing with a team in a conference that will be middle of the pack G5? I think it's because he has little respect in the NCAA BB community. It says a lot that he's the best we could get.

You’re being way too pessimistic with the assumptions. You could say the same similar things abut UNLV. It’s a decent hire and could work out really well for both parties.
Point being there were better options, real coaches who he is not, glorified defensive cheerleader that can recruit, could NEVER adjust as a coach. Very disappointing to say the least. I wanted a real coach, he’s not that IMHO

We’ll see. I think he will better suited for the NIL landscape than most coaches we were going after. I’ll take some potential excitement in recruiting and disappointment during the season over what we’ve had.

I also think that he will interact better with boosters than the previous coach. I don’t know if he will interact better than the previous coach’s father who did the interacting for him.

Huh? The whole point of firing Kevin was to fix the disappointment during the season. Who cares if we get good recruits if we aren't winning conference titles and dancing.

Truth!

We have seen the good recruiter here before but times were different then, not the age of NIL yet.
I know Rice did get them here but my biggest complaint with him was, he couldn’t coach them up or develop them once they got here.

I think that may be the difference in the two, Pastner develops guys, but we shall see soon enough. Bringing talent in but struggling in conference play, won’t fly, we’ve seen that already. Bringing in talent and he can’t compete in the November/December or OOC part of the schedule will also be unacceptable.

Put those 2 together and he will be on fumes here by year 3. Not saying this will happen but you better believe that the eyes who have seen this before will be watching and I ain’t just talking about the season ticket holders but the boosters as well.

There is no time for a slow build here. Pastner has said he wanted back into coaching for some reason, maybe he has some good Nil ideas or maybe he learned his lesson about coaching better in games to go with his attributes of recruiting, defensive scheme and player development.

I remember watching Dick Vermiel coach the Philadelphia Eagles with one type of style and take a break because he got burned out after losing in a Super Bowl. He left the game for a bit (15 years lol) and come back to coaching with the Rams and he won a Super Bowl coaching a different style. He had more coaches, a more relaxed style, he didn’t micromanage everything and this new approach had a huge effect on the team and they went on to have success and were champions in St Louis.
Long story I know but I hope Pastner has had a similar awakening in how he approaches coaching this time around, you can still learn new things in your 40’s, he ain’t too old to be set in his ways like I am! Lol

Maybe this is all about PR... we now have 2 national media members as HCs of our 2 big programs. Those 2 have and will be on lots of programs discussing their vision and plans. We will get favorable national media coverage because of Josh's relationships. Then you add in he's well liked by coaches and probably ADs around college basketball. Same with Dan. We need those relationships to get that P4 invite. So while it sucks sitting here pretending this is a good hire, maybe Harper's motives are PR over coaching Xs and Os with basketball

Not the worst hire. Not the best. But more than likely accurately reflects where UNLV MBB really is. The program has been mismanaged for many years, wreaks of instability, in many respects an impatient fan base with expectations that do not reflect the realities of the program. It can be turned around for sure but I suspect Harp wasn’t turning away high quality coaches who wanted to be here for Pastner. Hope is a word used by programs that cannot retain top coaches. That is us. We have to hope that Pastner can turn it around, just as we hoped Odom would do and did with football. It’s where we are as a program today. Let’s HOPE Pastner can do it.

It was said on another thread, but we need a Rick Barnes situation.

He disappointed with ridiculous talent at Texas, went to Tennessee and has done more with less, prioritizing team ball.

The problem here is that at Texas and all the resource$ in the world ( pre-NIL), he was expected on landing the top end guys. It was expected. As we know first hand, it is difficult to get these types of players to play as a team.

Here we have similar expectations as Texas, though adjusted for our league.

The good news is that these days, the best players are seasoned college transfers while the diaper dandies aren't as impactful as they once were. These players are more likely to play in a team format.

Lets hope for Barnes 2.0!

Harper’s motiv was

I got my wings clipped because I’ve been spending too much money. I got TKM’d and I’m a laughing stock. I’m going to panic hire Josh pastner because I’m leaving next year anyway.

I would be happy with Barnes 1.0, he took Texas to the tournament every year went to a Final 4, a Great 8, a few Sweet 16's...here's hoping we experience that same sort of disappointment.

He did do that dripping with NBA guys. We simply cannot afford that level of talent.
