USA Today way too early Top 25

Hajj was “good” for us, but let’s be honest. Our passing game was far from stellar.
He had some bright spots early, but the wheels came off an opportunistic moments. The 46.4% passing percentage at Boise, and the 27.8% against Cal was a bit of a let down. Especially when he came out against Syracuse went 21/25 with 84% completion rate.

I thought Hajj was going to go on to a good season for UNLV but he not only plateaued but regressed late in the season.

I still liked how he came in and took over after the other guy left us “high and dry” over NIL.

Many thought the season was in peril but thanks in part to Hajj, it ended with 11 wins!

I will give him credit for coming off the bench and stepping in and giving us a good season but the Hajj we saw end of season is what I expected when he first came. He regressed back to the mean.
He came out was was extremely efficient. Extremely higher completion percentage and very effective.

I think he was different enough from Sluka, and a little less gunshy to throw the ball to make him effective. But He really feasted heavilt[y off just a few plays. That slant/skinny post to Ricky in the slot being the big money maker play.

Teams were able to adjust to those plays and he became much less effective.

The QB position does genuinely worry me as being the weak link this year. Colandrea just looks so small and a lot of those clips during spring were DBs picking off his tipped passes. Orji, who knows...
Mullen turned Kyle Trask, a QB who didnt start a single HS football game into a NFL QB and potential Heisman candidate... Im not worried about QB.
The way I see pre-season rankings is that we finished the year ranked, we had good roster turnover but we filled it in with high quality talent, we hired a very good coach with media friends and staff that is very talented. We are going to be competing for the MWC crown and despite the conservative outlook some people are taking, I dont feel that we will see any drop off from last year and may potentially be better this year. Again, I think Boise is over rated and the loss of their OC combined with a once in a generation college talent that carried their team is not easily replaced.

ESPN has us ranked 75th

The ranking is based on returning production from last year. So considering how many players we lost in the portal, it’s not surprising. What is surprising is Boise’s ranking, considering other than Jeanty, they have a lot of returning production from last years squad. I think this means the experts think Boise may take a bigger step backwards with Jeanty gone than the Boise faithful are willing to admit.

Its because these analysis fail to take into account the loss of their OC.. They have earned their respect, but its also at their detriment because losing Dirk isnt easily replaceable, and thinking the Fresno kid and Gaines will replace Jeanty is a fallacy thats waiting to be exposed. Adding that Maddux is back at QB and were replacing a ton of Offensive powers it make sense... but again, I dont think that it accounts for those losses and not having the fear of Jeanty in the backfield to open up WRs or TEs because linebackers have to play so close to the line isnt easily replaceable.

While they are dropping UNLV over 50 spots!
