UNLV Stadium next step

MGM executives and board are the biggest opponents to the new stadium. A new stadium will compete with their new stadium. Also, they were the ones who poo pooed the initial stadium plan just so they could create their own. Dirty dirty play by MGM.

I hope this stadium gets done for UNLV sake but also to see those MGM traitors squirm.

We are living in an era in Vegas where the largest industry (gaming and tourism) is no longer as invested as it once was in the well being of the community at large as it is in the well being of its shareholder's portfolios. They are big corporations who need to justify the money they spend to their shareholders. Nothing wrong with that, it's the nature of the beast. They would love to see a big multi-use venue here in Vegas that would draw tourists and big events - but they want to be the ones to own and operate it. They'd be happy to rent it to UNLV...for a small fee.

Think about the T&M from their perspective. It was built using largely statewide slot machine tax revenue (i.e. "their" money) and it hosts concerts and major events that THEY believe they could be hosting. They benefit indirectly from the events the T&M hosts but they would also like the revenue.

I think Snyder's move with the LVCVA is shrewd. Bypass the corporations and appeal to the city to form a partnership to get a stadium built for the good of the city.

Just put the god damn stadium where "the drink" nightclub used to be..

It's unbelievable how much desert is here in Vegas and they can't find a place to put a stupid stadium.

And dammit, I want a stadium ala Dallas Stadium or none at all.

If the stadium is a long way off, can we please pave the dirt dust bowl? It is probably a pipe dream at this point, but come on. If they need people to lay down cement, I ll work for free.

They need to do this no matter what. It's been too long, too many excuses. Regardless, the outcome of the stadium deal, a paved lot will be used in the future. The fact is that Sam Boyd is a nice stadium and will be used no matter what. A paved lot will pay for it self, even if the Rebels only play there another 3 years. The reality is that UNLV would be using SBS for 2016 and 2017 even if the new stadium is built. It would take 9 months to design and 1.5 years to build. So even if they start tomorrow, it's a ways off, maybe 2019.

I have zero confidence a stadium will ever be built. There's too much buracracy and politics involved. I think what will happen is a series of stadium upgrades at SBS over the next 5 years to bring it to a level of where it can compete with other stadiums in the MWC and P12.

Unfortunately, I agree with you. There's a reason all these proposals haven't gained traction over the years. They're not allowed to get traction.

Vegas has changed so much (for the worse, IMO) since the mid 80's. Las Vegas once had a homey feel, we all owned it. Now it's as corporate as any other place in America and the beaurocracy that comes with it is nearly impossible to dent. It's all about making dollars for yourself, keeping dollars for yourself. There's no more "greater good".

I disagree. The fact is there has been numerous attempts, designs and discussions about a large stadium. This is evidence demonstrating the need and potential of a stadium. These talks and proposals have been more from outside of UNLV. Findlays kid, Oscar Goodman's many proposals, Jackie Robinsons $1.4B dream sports resort, the car salesman and thief that proposed the Henderson sports complex, Majestic and Cavileers plan and even Sheldon Adelson comments about LVCVA placing a stadium in the new convention district. The need is real and obvious to many resorts and hospitality companies in Las Vegas. Hell, MGM's decision to build an arena is even further proof.

It's not a matter of whether it will happen, it is when and by whom. Combination of UNLV and LVCVA is the best opportunity because it takes the competitive issues (between hotels) out of the equation. The only group that will oppose will be MGM which is obviously a big deal. BUT MGM will stand to benefit ALOT because of the location of the new stadium. They may change their tune IF they can be assured that the new stadium will not undercut their arena.

It's going to happen but to your point bureaucracy is an issue and will cause delays.

Not to mention, a major college football game or massive concert would sell out the arena. Let's say 55K. That's 55K coming to Las Vegas and filling 55K hotel rooms.

55K multiplied by $150 average room night plus dining plus gaming plus incidentals. So let's say $400 per person. That's $22M impact on the Las Vegas economy (hotel pockets) and potential taxes for a SINGLE EVENT. Let's say 20 events for the year and that's $440M econmonic impact per year and THATS a lot of taxes for Las Vegas.

Everyone wins. All hospitality companies (hotels, transportation, dining, gaming) AND the people of Las Vegas win by undertaking this project.

We need to right people talking about this and lobbying for this to happen. We need a real Las Vegan to support this idea to get true traction. We need Lorenzo Fertitta to start the conversation.

The one thing I've learned from living in Las Vegas all my life and working in the Casino industry is, the needs of the many never outweigh the financial needs of the few.

I hope you're right and I really do hope this can be done at ae point, I just seriously doubt all sides can come together for once to agree on something that would be good for the University and the community as a whole.
 
UFC Rebel Stadium

10 mega concerts (Taylor Swift, Drake, etc)
2 UFC events
1-2 Boxing events
2 College Football games (non-UNLV)
1 Las Vegas Bowl revamped
1 Pre-season NFL game
1 MLS soccer match
1 USA Soccer match

The stadium would transform Vegas and take the next step necessary for Las Vegas evolve as the entertainment capital of the world.

There was one plan (may still be viable or in the mix) where there was going to be a shopping center attatched to the stadium like an outdoor mall. Those businesses would help pay for some of the actual cost of the stadium through rent.

I think anything that adds to the experience should be considered.

Not exactly the same but some of the allure of places like Wrigley field is the atmosphere outside the park.

Mgm's plan to help pay for the stadium is to start charging for parking; even in the self parking lots by the Aria, Monte Carlo, and New York, New York. Our hotel (right inbetween all of those casinos) that has been charging for overnight valet parking since its opening 5 years ago and will even start charging for day valet parking during event days.

It amazes me that mgm would be fighting against their great source of hotel management.

I like the concept. It's paramount that UNLV obtains the parcel of land for future growth. Over the past 50 years there's few, if any, other universities around the country who have built and expanded faster than what UNLV has. The growth has been significant. The law school is thriving, the engineering program has become a leader, the business school is doing great, the medical school is nearly set to take off. UNLV is climbing its way to becoming a top tier institution which is remarkable considering there was nothing before 1957. The demand is there and growth is inevitable. Occupying this land is both logical and critical for the ongoing development of facilities, an appropriate football stadium, student housing, office spaces and new academic buildings.

A couple of things I think are interesting and fun to let my mind get carried away with:
Take a peek at the projected move of football practice fields and the large red building just to the south of them.(pg.8 or 11)
- also the extra redevelopment space that opens up on and around the current practice fields due to using the ~new 80 acres
Plaza experience is cool to look at (pg. 13)
"Enhanced Frontage"(pg. 16), which in my mind equals a fantastic tailgate and pre-game experience... short walk over.

Its quite funny that out of the Population of the State of Nevada (2,800,00 plus), that 2,027,828 live in Las Vegas, yet funding is largely used for the rest of the state..... Sad. That means the rest of the state holds a population of a little less than 800,000, which is funny. That was the population of just LAS VEGAS about two years ago.

UNR spends more per student than UNLV does.. Thanks to UNLV and the NV Legislature.

The overwhelming majority of population resides in Southern Nevada yet the system is such that resources are spread throughout. A development like the one being proposed with this land purchase and stadium build would drastically set UNLV apart as the flagship university of Nevada (which it should be considering the prominence of Las Vegas and its impact on the state).

There is far more potential for growth at UNLV both academically and athletically based on location and demand alone, and this type of investment in UNLV would be an absolute game-changer for the school. Those truly objective in the state system looking to better higher education in Nevada would agree this development is needed for future growth in Las Vegas. Yet it seems there is often a contingent of UNR loyalist and Northern Nevadan decision-makers who occasionally resist.

So.....doing some digging today and came across some interesting things. It's already been reported but I'm not sure what people know of it or understand it. Basically, Governor Sandoval completed executive order earlier this year which established the Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee including Steve Hill (from Gov's Office), Len Jessup, UNLV president, Carol Goodman, Mayor, Steve Sisolak, BOR, Kristin McMillan, Pres. LVCVA, and executives for Boyd Gaming, Wynn Resorts, Sands, MGM, Ceasars Entertainment and Stations.

The SNTIC has been created to identify and prioritize tourism improvement projects in southern Nevada, explore potential funding mechanisms to support new tourism related initiatives. They meet monthly and will submit report to Governor with their findings July 2016.

They have met 4 times since July and the stadium has been a regular topic. Most of these meetings have been lightly touched on by the LV media.

Couple of tidbits. We know Jessup, Sisolak, Goodman know the need and benefit of the stadium and obviously back it. Looks like the Sands does too. In one of the Sands presentations they clearly spell out they support a stadium and UNLVs involvement as the neutral operator.

Here is the link to UNLV presentation detailing everything about stadium project. Two financial projections were completed but I think they are both conservative especially one. Nonetheless, I clearly demonstrates the need and ability to pay for it self and help Las Vegas along the way.

I had a conversation a couple of weeks ago with one of the UNLV police officers who told me they now are responsible for patrolling that vacant land by Trop/Koval because it's now part of UNLV's campus. Acquiring the space is a major step forward for the university.

Is it possible that the new athletic center has been held until the land for possible stadium site was secured? Is it possible that the new athletic center may be place on this parcel????

I have no inside info but there can be only a couple reasons why the athletic center hasn't been announced yet:

1. Additional donors needed and Fertitta didn't want to be only one on the hook.

2. Change in scope. A much bigger better designed center may being considered requiring more design and or money.

3. Athletic center is part of a bigger plan including the stadium.

If it gets built. Watch how many casinos start to charge for parking. Like MGM. It will be a smashing success! Parking will be a nightmare, but worth ever second waiting to get home.
