I saw on ESPN last night that UCLA will be starting a true freshman at QB, Josh Rosen this season. If nothing else, I feel that gives us a better opportunity to capitalize on some mistakes by a kid who doesn't have any game experience at the D1 level. That's not to say that he won't be good, he will be. But just that it can take some time to get used to the D1 game speed and to get on the same page with your receivers, as well as a good understanding of the playbook. He was the #1 rated QB coming out of high school, and some are comparing him to Peyton Manning with his abilities, so obviously he has talent. Maybe we can count on him looking past UNLV and capitalize on a few errors.

As a side note, he beat out the son of the former UCLA head coach, Jerry Neuheisel for the starting spot. Maybe Neuheisel (a Junior) should transfer out to UNLV, as he's most likely not going to get a chance to play at UCLA.

they are so talented everywhere else and bring back one of the leading rushers in the Pac 12 Paul Perkins. Their defense is full of playmakers as well. It will be a fun atmosphere regardless and Sanchez coached against Rosen last year.

I will be very interested to see how much freedom he is given in week one against Virginia.

Or it could be an Anu Solomon situation. That didn't pan out well for us.

Just watched the kids HS highlights. He's pretty bad a$$. I think he'll be as good as any upper classman QB. UCLA should have the line to protect him especially from our defense (sorry Rebs). This kid may be throwing on us all day.

Rosen is the goods. He has been enrolled since the spring so has has a spring game and fall practice under his belt. I actually wouldn't expect much drop off as Rosen may actually be more effective than Hundley. He should be a #1 draft choice in a couple of years
He also has 1500-yard rusher Paul Perkins and former Gael Nate Starks as his primary backs.
UCLA have been known to let teams stay in the game at times but it looks like a bad match up on paper

UCLA returns 18 starters, the entire OL and last seasons PAC rushing leader in Paul Perkins. Rosen is a stud but UCLA won't need him to be great this season just good enough, he could hand off the entire game vs us and UCLA wins by 28 points. They could hand off to Myles Jack a linebacker (and they will a few times) all game up the middle and he would go for 250 and 4 TD's.

Lets not kid ourselves we have absolutely no chance to even compete in this game. Its a great opportunity to get a very high profile school to Las Vegas, this game is not an opportunity for a win.

Sanchez announces he wants first home game to be a black out. It wont change the outcome of the game but cool to see him trying to excite the old fan base and bring some new fans on board.

Thanks for raining on my parade rebswin.

Let's hope playing at home provides some fire.

Let's not forget the crazy odds facing the teams below:
  • 2008 Stanford over USC 24-23 - Stanford 41 point spread
  • 1998 Oregon State over Washington 21-20 - OSU getting 37 points
  • 1998 Temple over Virginia Tech - VaTech minus 28 points
  • 2007 Appalachian State over Michigan - AppState +164 points
  • 1999 Cincinnati over Wisconsin 17-12 - Bearcats lost to DI-AA a week earlier and Badgers favored by 26.5 points
Let's hope the Rebs stand their ground, protect the home field and play competitive football. Rebels are definitely out matched but let's hope they can enter the record books with their own upset over Goliath.

You forgot UNLV over #16 Arizona State during the Sanford era...We actually ruined ESPN college game day for ASU. They were scheduled to host the next week for the match up vs top 5 Georgia.

We are probably looking at a similar result to what happened vs Arizona two years back. Either way it is another example of Sanchez at least making an effort to build some excitement.

I just hope that the players take to heart the fact the media gives them no chance and put it all on the line and show everyone that UNLV will not just roll over for ucla. One of the LA media was on a local radio sports show (1100 AM) and talked about how UNLV was a "tomato can" for ucla, and all they had to do was show up to win easy. Would love to see him eat his words, and at least see UNLV play hardnose competitive ball.

UCLA isn't the only crowd with no respect for UNLV, NIU fans are saying UNLV will be a simple cakewalk also. I'm sure Michigan is thinking the same thing too. And they might all be right. Or--and I hope this is the case--the "New Era" begins with a nasty Rebel squad who won't back down from anyone, who plays to win no matter the caliber of opponent, and develops a little swagger of their own by playing smart, physical and aggressive football.

Smart, physical, AND aggressive? The Rebels? That would be a sight. But if any coach has the ability to get that out of a team, it's Coach Sanchez. I'm certainly hopeful we'll see that this season.

There was a line or two in one of Mark Anderson's stories that makes me optimistic we might see some changes -- a more aggressive team. He said that Rebel fans can expect to see more blitzes and creativity on defense. I'm not sure anyone has taken in more Rebel practices than Anderson, so I think he's probably seeing more of that than in years past. And it's a MUCH needed change. There was nothing more frustrating than watching our team constantly give a quarterback ALL DAY to throw the ball by rushing 3-4 players in passing situations. If you give a decent quarterback time to throw, receivers get open eventually, and open receivers are easy targets for a college QB.
