UC-Davis to MWC

Angry What Is This GIF by Adult Swim

Strange decision. How much of a fuss are the Big 10 and SEC putting up over NDSU? That should be an obvious choice

Looks like a done deal..

“We are thrilled to join the Mountain West Conference, and we look forward to an incredible experience for our student-athletes and for our fans,” said UC Davis Chancellor Gary S. May in a statement. “Our transition to the highly regarded conference will introduce our Aggie community to a broader audience, in major metropolitan areas and through increased media coverage.”

Yeah they add basketball inventory but does the new MW need more bad basketball?

No. But you do need some bodies for conference schedule. Trust me no cartwheels being done by me over this move.

I know nobody cares but they are a solid baseball school no?

I don't follow baseball all that much. But, I did just watch the Big West Volleyball Tournament. They have a good volleyball team and lost to Hawaii in the semi-finals. Adding Hawaii and UTEP (yeah, I watched C-USA's volleyball tournament as well) who just went to the NCAA tournament to our volleyball league is good for me.

Everything revolves around football obviously but adding some solid 'other' sports isn't the worst move.

Not exactly in a position of power.

Not a particularly great baseball school. They’re always in the bottom half of the Big West. The Big West and the MWC aren’t really comparable though so they’ll probably be good by MW standards.

Very good move! Large alumni base and endowment. Academically, one of the best UC schools after UCLA and Berkeley. Penetration into California media markets for new tv contract. Potential to move football to FBS at your level in future particularly if they expand football stadium. Prevents the Pac12 from taking them. If they get serious and invest in football, they could surpass San Diego State, SJSU and Fresno.

Wonder if they are committed to moving up to FBS is football in the near future?
I would assume so. For other sports there isn’t a huge a difference between the Big West and the 2026 MWC. If you’re not thinking about FBS football I don’t see why they make the move. The TV money for a non football member should be very minimal

What does the MW get in return for not inviting FCS schools for football? I get the SEC and B1G being against it but what can they do or offer?

They can’t just tell the MW…NO! It doesn’t make any sense.

Olympic sport travel partner. It's definitely a money saving move. It's not a bad move. PAC2 may be laughing now, but wait til they add NMSU just to become a conference.

That will end up in the Federal courts, and wouldn't be surprised if the Big and SEC at some point do not get sued for hundreds of millions if not billions in the future. What the Big and SEC are doing now is going to end up being an Anti-trust case that has major financial implications.
It definitely sounds like anti-trust but why succumb to the pressure? Unless you are keeping the playoffs open to G5 schools for 10 years guaranteed then go pound sand we will invite who we like.

Aren't we locked in now?
Yes but there’s a lawsuit pending by the NPAC against the MW over the fees they have to pay. If the NPAC is successful then any deal is probably void. MW wouldn’t be able to meet their commitments and UNLV wouldn’t have to pay an exit fee to go to the NPAC.

I thought those fees were related to the scheduling agreement?

The Pac-2 lawsuit, frivolous as it is, has exactly nothing to do with exit fees for UNLV or any other add'l MW team. The only connection is that if by some miracle the lawsuit is successful, pigs fly out my ass, hell freezes over and other similar events occur, the MW may be short on cash to pay UNLV its promised incentives for staying.

Of course that is a big connection and I guess Rose may be accurate that UNLV has a bargaining chip over their exit fee if the MW can't come up with their commitment.

Oh and to the topic, why the F would the MW ever come up with such as dumbass move to add a FB playing school in all sports but FB? Need to shore up participation in Women's Equestrian and Men's Soccer?

In the Scheduling Agreement they are called Withdrawal Fees. That is what the Pac has filed a lawsuit for. They don't want to pay it. However, money should be coming from the Exit Fees which are unrelated to the Scheduling Agreement.

Two sources of money. But, if the MWC fails to pay us what they agreed to for us staying then we should be able to leave.

If they can’t meet their commitments then it’s game over for the MW because AFA and UNLV will be on the move.

Was kinda surprised on this one.

Looked up UC Davis.

$2 billion endowment
40,000 student enrollment
Bay Area market
Ranked academically 33rd national university

We’ll see, but Davis has potential.
