Making any run in the MWC tournament. Way too many issues none of which they’ve been able to address. My attention turns towards how to make them competitive next season. Otz made a huge mistake in the last recruiting season focusing on developing freshman rather than bringing in a couple transfers who could step in immediately, Hoping he doesnt make that mistake again (although his recent comments sound like he’s going to double down on this strategy). From a 4-yr player development perspective, I’m not without hope in guys like Blake, Grill and Wood. I expect Blake to make a leap his sophomore year. He has the skills to progress like Hamilton did. Grill and Wood will take longer but from the long view perspective they can become solid contributors although more so as solid secondary players than primary scorers. I do hope Diong comes back given our severe lack of serviceable bigs. Plus he would provide some stability to the team which seems to play better when he’s in.
All that said Otz needs to focus on landing a few transfers/JC’s who can step in and contribute immediately. Two bigs, one who can be a real scoring threat down low and one who can step out and hit mid-range shots, and both with passing skills, would be ideal. Add a PG that can run the team and allow Coleman and Gilbert to come off the bench. Assuming all key players return (unlikely), filling a few key holes with experienced players along with having Hamilton and Jenkins as seniors and the maturation of our youngsters MAY give us a competitive team. Not world beaters, not even MWC Champions, but one that can handle Wyoming for F-sake and be a legit threat to the top half of the conference. Gotta start somewhere.
