There are early stage discussions going on that UNLV should adopt the “Runnin’ Rebels” for all sports. Because, that’s the perception of UNLV in all sports and the “ Runnin’ Rebels is iconic. What do you guys think?

The idea sucks. I'd rather just drop the Rebels altogether if they are thinking that crap. Just leave us as UNLV. Clean, Simple, and Sweet. This will force the world to just call us UNLV. Can't be better than that.

UNLV Football
UNLV Men's Basketball
UNLV Women's Basketball
UNLV........ You get the idea.

Guys, PC has nothing to do with the discussion and there hasn’t been a push to abandon Rebels. It’s marketing and brand value. The “Runnin’ Rebels” is iconic in college sports. Instantly, recognizable by the public and it knows it’s UNLV like Hoosiers (Indiana) Fighting Irish (Norte Dame) or Trojans (USC). That’s why the discussion is going on.

Hey Reb was also iconic, widely recognized, he was scrapped because four people objected. That certainly was PC and bowing down to the woke few.

They can do it, don’t do it, whatever … the basketball team built it, earned it … if the rest of the sports want to continue to ride the coattails of a once great, now irrelevant hoops program … go for it. Personally, I find it pathetic. But just like we haven’t run for years, in fact, the opposite as witnessed by Barkleys walking Rebels, it’s beyond stupid to call golfers, swimmers, volleyball players, waterpolo teams … Runnin’. It’s stupid. Completely. So that makes me think it’ll happen.

We don’t even run anymore. Just cashing out on Tark’s legacy…

Pathetic.

But, I wouldn’t mind it for football.

Who were the 4 people that voted our logo out?

As far as I know, volleyball players do as much running as basketball players. Just look at some of the names they have for teams like who would ever fear an anteater? What about North Carolina Tar Heels - That equates to being stuck in the tar or another words slow. I also wonder how they would have ever forced UNLV to remove a mountain man which was the replacement for a mascot that people thought was racist, while allowing North Carolina to kee the name tar heels which was originally a very derogatory name for poor or a black person in North Carolina, and also went along the same meaning as tar baby, etc... There has never been any sense to what names they allow to stay and go! After four years of this country being WOKE, I am hoping we can remove those at UNLV who removed "HEY REB!", and bring it back!

Look at that sh*tty logo and Nike makes a quick buck off it too. Who’s brilliant idea was it to make us look like the Tampa Bay Bucaneers??

You get the gist of what I’m saying though when applying “runnin” with a broad stroke.

Hey Reb isn’t racist, imo. It’s bored people being Karen’s.

I don’t think Seminoles, Redskins, etc, carry a negative connotation. I look at it as honoring them for a toughness, a fierceness.

Where are all the Irish people screaming about those Irish drunks and bar brawls?

There’s an unbelievable oversensitivity to everything today and if one person is offended, it must be changed. It’s fkn nauseating. Then again, I’m thick skinned and I don’t care if somebody refers to me personally as a Dego, wop, guido, whatever the f they want.

Part of my point is - UNLV tries to cash in on the Tark aura when it’s convenient. But much the school itself do not like him. He was a source of great pride to US, but to academia, to the Hikers and such, he was a stain on the reputation of UNLV and was viewed as Satan himself. But they’ll squeeze what they can out of it that they consider beneficial. It’s hypocritical to me.

Yes, there’s a statue and nice Memorial set up at the Mack, it’s beautiful, it means something to many of us. There are other things, as well. But that’s all for the TRUE FANS, the loyalists, or it’s a chance for new fans to understand and honor our history. But the undertone of much of the university, they viewed him as shit. The only coaches past Tark that honored him, embraced him, were Lon and Dave. The others didn’t like it, it cast too huge of a shadow. Lon and Dave could see way beyond that, they realized it was an honor.

So borrowing his “Runnin’”, wanting a Shark mascot, it’s pathetic as it gets to me. I’d be more in the camp of changing our school colors, our team name, etc … a complete severance from the past that embarrasses our disingenuous university.

We are what we are athletically because of TARK, not because of academics. And not that we have to live up to his results, but we built an incredible persona, what we are known for … brash, tough, unapologetic, never quitting … and we don’t and haven’t slightly resembled that since he left. We’ve been the softest bunch of pansies in 80% of the seasons since he left.

I'm not for it. I think it gets goofy and awkward for some of the sports (Golf, Swimming/Diving, the hockey club, Volleyball) and sort of takes away from the Hustlin' Rebels history on the baseball side of things. If we wanted to talk about adding other present participle adjectives to other teams I'd be more amenable to it.

I totally understand what you were saying, and was without a doubt being sarcastic regarding the volleyball team and was being the same way regarding the Tar Heels! I think it is totally ridiculous that they would remove a mountain man because a few people thought it looked like a confederate general, while leaving other mascots that would be considered far worse, but in reality, I don't think any mascots should have been removed or changed! Let me make a correction for you: UNLV tries to cash in on the Tark aura when it’s convenient. But much the STAFF itself do not like him, while most of the STUDENTS and residence of Las Vegas loved him!

The funny thing is in the 70s the students voted to move away from the 'Johnny Reb' Beauregard wolf despite the mascot not really having anything to do with the Confederacy, really. It was just a tongue-in-cheek shot at the UNR mascot. The tried the UNLV sunburst and the revolutionary minuteman (the non-problematic rebel) through the 70s and early 80s but nothing really stuck.

Hey Reb was 100% meant to be a frontiersman of the likes of Kit Carson and John Fremont. I guess people could get mad at that for crimes against Native Americans that some of those people were directly or indirectly related to--but that was never the case. It was our own students kneejerk reacting to the Rebel name without understanding. This is not the Rebel of Ole Miss, but it looked just similar enough to get people to react to it especially with the name of the program.

Also, Ole Miss actually already is actively trying a shark mascot so that's probably out either way.

I don't know if I'm quite as cynical as you on this point, but I can't say that you're wrong. Our administration actively tried to set him up with Maxon and Finfrock pulling out illegal investigation methods to try and hang ANYTHING on him. Then when something finally got a little bit of momentum with the NCAA, they just stabbed him in the back and laughed as he bled out. Treated the guy like he had the plague, and took way too long to do too little too late to get him back into the community where he belonged.
