Over all a good win especially to end the losing streak against SDSU.

JJ may drive me a little crazy with hi kamikaze drives into the middle of the defense, his tempo is a BIG asset. I hope Amari will be able to bring the same tempo to UNLV next year.

I am in the camp that starting Beck and bringing Clyburn off the bench is positive. But I also think Clyburn brings a lot of energy onto the court. A good thing. But he shoots an amazingly live shot. His missed free throw last night hit the rim twice before deciding to fail to drop. No shooter’s touch!

Diong is so much fun to watch. His development the next few years will have a real telling impact. If his current rate of improvement continues, he could be a lottery pick as a senior or junior. If his improvement stalls, that will be very disappointing. Go Rebels.

Every time the Rebels fall flat, there is a flurry of activity here. Posters letting us know that they are done, either for the season, or forever. I’m as guilty as anyone. More than once I’ve declared that my limit has been reached, only to return in a couple of days, with renewed hope that the season still could be salvaged.

But here we are, a day after easily our best victory of the conference season, probably the best one of the entire year, and, with a couple of exceptions (shout-out to jvhiker and Pistol Pete 1) there are crickets. We should be exulting in a fine effort by the Rebels. Yet there seem to be more posters that would prefer to call for the head of MM, than to celebrate his successes. This was a great win.

McCoy and Juiston operated together like poetry in motion. Watching them work together like that was joyful. Jordy dazzled with his blinding speed, and JoJo contributed the occasional 3-pointer, when the Rebels were putting some distance between themselves and the Aztecs.

The box score tells us that the Rebels got most of their scoring from our impressive front line. Brandon and Shakur scored 21 apiece, 48% of the total score. Juiston had a double-double, grabbing 11 boards, 5 of them of the offensive variety. He had an all-around great game, adding 5 assists and 4 steals to his stat line. And he contributed in ways that don’t show up in the box score. The energy that he brought to the game made him, easily the MVP of this win.

The four starters, JJ, JoJo, McCoy. & Juiston were responsible for 73% of the total score. Nunu, in his first start, scored just five points, on 2-for-4 shooting being responsible for one of the four Rebel 3-pointers. And his lone two-pointer was a sweet move that put the defender on his back.He didn’t force his game. He let it come to him.

And Clyburn came off the bench for the first time to contribute 5 points in 15 minutes of game-time. But I thought he also added some energy as well. Maybe he wanted to make a case for getting his starting spot back. Amauri Hardy got 18 minutes on the floor, adding 3 points. He was 1-4, all four were 3-pointers, and he was successful on one attempt he added 2 assists.

And of course, we won’t forget Mbacke Diong. The African tall boy was, once again a significant contributor, he added 7 points, 2 boards, one of the offensive variety, and a couple of steals, in his 9 minutes of playing time. Although it says that he had no blocks, I’m certain that he at least altered some shots, he is becoming a bonafide rim-protector While McCoy is miles ahead offensively, you can feel the difference around the defensive rim when Diong patrols the paint.

It’s obvious that our four regular starters are irreplaceable. Should, God forbid, one of them go down, I’m afraid our season would be hopelessly lost. That may sound silly as we are just 4-4 in conference. But I still believe, and last night’s game reinforced my opinion, that this team still has the ability to get the message and become a very dangerous opponent for any team. If there was one glaring negative to this excellent victory it would be free throws. Our inability to make them, with any consistency, will remain an Achilles Heel, as we begin to challenge some of the ,more talented teams

So, let’s celebrate a solid win over a fairly decent team at the T&M. Which is significant, considering where the Mountain West tournament is taking place (Don’t tell Steve Alford I said that).

Additionally, it should be noted that in most of their victories, San Diego St. held their opponents in the 70's, 60's, even the 50's and in the case of San Jose, 49 points. The Rebels were a bucket away (or a couple of made free throws) from 90. An impressive offensive display, vs a team that would prefer to slow things down, unless they had a fast-break opportunity.

Way to set the pace Rebels!

My takeaway was their best guy got hurt..

I’ll take the victory though.

The Rebels proved they can beat an upper tier MWC team. SJSU for the mid week game and then the gauntlet of Boise St., Reno, and Wyoming. The Rebels can really turn the corner going down the home stretch with momentum. Definitely hopeful that the rest of the season the Rebs continue to play like they did against SDSU

Except SDSU isn’t top tier. By name, maybe. But these last two years, middle third at very best, bottom of the middle third. In fact, looking at the standings, UNLV has beaten all the teams below them and lost to the teams above them. That USU, UNM and Fresno are above us.... kind of mind boggling because none of them are good teams at all.

So historically, by name, by their “ownage” over us.... I can see leaning towards big win ... but it’s along the same line of finally winning at Clune.... but those squads are garbage, to be honest.

What I found most encouraging was, that after the Rebels had built a substantial lead, and the Aztecs made the run which you would expect any good team to make, SDSU never got closer than six, for the remainder of the game.

In past games you could count on the Rebels to fold. The opponents would continue to close, and the Rebels would either lose, or fight a nail-biting battle to the buzzer.

Against the Aztecs, they held their advantage for the remainder of the game. The Rebels enjoyed a relatively comfortable lead all the way to the wire. Other teams handled us that way. It’s about time the shoe was on the other foot.

The next big game is SJSU on Wednesday. Can the Rebels put them away early win by a sizable amount? That will give them momentum heading into Boise. Clearly the game at Boise is the big test. Have the rebels become contenders or are they still pretenders. Go Rebels.

All in all, at the end of the game it was great to be a Rebel. We won, we did what we were supposed to do, we exerted our will on them. When was the last time we played San Diego and scored more than 60 pts? Couple more free throws and we crack 90.

So glad Beck got the start as I think he brings a toughness lacking in Clyburn. Clyburn is a good guy and I like him but he is more of a 1’st or 2’nd guy off the bench type. BTW I was letting go with the San Diego whoop whoop when he broke Mitchell’s ankles.

But as good a day as it was for MBB it was probably moreso for football. Huge recruiting day! Saturday may indeed mark a turn around for hoops but i believe the events of the last week will definitely mark a turn around for football.

PS. I think I wasn’t alone at the 7:00 minute mark with a 10 pt lead giving us about a 10%-15% chance of success.

Well, you can downgrade the value of the win over SDSU, and your points are not without merit. There’s no denying that the departure of Steve Fisher has led to a downgrade in the quality of the Aztecs. Or perhaps I've got that backwards. Maybe Steve saw the writing on the wall, and got out of Dodge. But at least he left Malik Pope. He’s been there since Y2k , no? Either way, they are not the dominant team that the have been in the conference, recently.

But classifying them as a “bad” team, is going too far. They have a winning culture, and to end an 11-game losing streak, is notable. And let’s not forget, they beat Gonzaga. A bona fide Top 10-team.

The Aztecs are assuredly not the team they were during Fisher’s peak, ruling the Mountain West, when it was ranked as high as 3rd toughest in the nation. A time when the MW would send three, and possibly four representatives to the NCAA Tournament. Unlike now, when we get one entrant. And that’s only because they’re required to have one.

But our first home victory, vs an historic rival, is an accomplishment worthy of celebration. Nothing will dissuade me from taking heart from it. It’s very possible that the Rebels have finally turned a corner on this season.

I still shake my head at all the uncontested 3's we let SDSU take. Against a decent shooting team we could've been looking at another loss at home. Still, we got the monkey off our back by beating SDSU. Hopefully we just build on that and work much, much harder on defense. It was nice to see McCoy noticeably more aggressive on defense.
