At this point Martell has had about as much time with the UNLV playbook as Friel had by the time he became the UNLV starter.
Martell is no more the fit for UNLV's QB situation than fellow Gorman standout Biaggio Ali-Walsh was the fit to UNLV's RB group. Both cases are actually very similar. At Gorman they rose to high rankings when they had ten linemen over 250lb rotating in, and 6'4 WRs that were faster than the DBs covering them.
There are many cases of QBs that are Martell's size succeeding at the FBS level, but the roster of 6'5"+ OLs and TEs that Arroyo's staff has been recruiting aren't a fit for a shorter QB to see the field.
This season probably was "Last Chance U" for Martell's QB aspirations. Will there ever be a better opportunity for a 23-year-old journeyman QB to step in at the FBS level than this season at UNLV, with no returning starter and only having to beat out an 18-year-old true freshman that hadn't played a game of football since his junior season of high school?
