Rebels on a 2 game Win Streak!

At this point Martell has had about as much time with the UNLV playbook as Friel had by the time he became the UNLV starter.

Martell is no more the fit for UNLV's QB situation than fellow Gorman standout Biaggio Ali-Walsh was the fit to UNLV's RB group. Both cases are actually very similar. At Gorman they rose to high rankings when they had ten linemen over 250lb rotating in, and 6'4 WRs that were faster than the DBs covering them.

There are many cases of QBs that are Martell's size succeeding at the FBS level, but the roster of 6'5"+ OLs and TEs that Arroyo's staff has been recruiting aren't a fit for a shorter QB to see the field.

This season probably was "Last Chance U" for Martell's QB aspirations. Will there ever be a better opportunity for a 23-year-old journeyman QB to step in at the FBS level than this season at UNLV, with no returning starter and only having to beat out an 18-year-old true freshman that hadn't played a game of football since his junior season of high school?

He figured out how to keep the team interested and playing hard. That's no small feat with that kind of losing streak.
Luckily some of those losses were close losses. Get smoked in those and I don’t know how any coach can gather the troops.

I do think he deserves some credit. It’s easier than ever to “cave” … negatives fly from angles that didn’t exist before and people, in general, are shorter and more pissy. It was “easier” for them to just give in than fight back. But they’re fighting.

Criticize when it’s appropriate, but give some credit when it’s due is the way I see it.

I thought UNR was the first game where the team mostly looked like they had given up. Which was concerning to me given the opponent.
But they have had a much different look since then. Even after getting punched hard early in the last game they stayed resilient.
Also last game was the first time all year where they were close or had the lead late in the game where I was just waiting for it to fall apart. It "felt" like they were going to pull through. FWIW.

Ill give you that one!

But I still believe that wins and losses are important. And that will be very important come next season. My point is if we somehow win the next 2 games, then I alongwith many more will say he (Arroyo) might be on to something here. I don’t think many are saying that because we beat UH and UNM.

Of course wins and losses matter.

Yes there are coaches that flip programs around quickly. But it's not easy. It takes 3 recruiting classes to flip a roster.

Look at some of Sanchez' highly touted recruits who aren't even seeing the field (Viramontes comes to mind)

I don't know if he turns this thing around.

They have 5 one score losses.
Have been competitive in every conference game aside from Reno.

Were forced to start a true freshman at QB.

Defense has improved as the season has gone along. That's coaching.

Friel still puts the ball in danger too often, but he has gotten better compared to his first few starts. When was the last time we saw a QB actually improve over the course of a season? Herring?

They aren't far off.

He'll need to get to 5-7 and beat Reno or 6-6 and make a bowl to not be on the hot seat after next year.

2-8 sucks. But there's some glimmers of hope for next season...

He's more athletic Dalton Sneed.

There's no shame in not getting more run in a QB room filled with 3 or 4 NFL caliber guys.

The fact he can't beat out a true freshman in Friel, says something.

Even more telling, Brumfield is out, so the options are Friel, Rogers and a walk on..Pretty lean. And the staff moved him to WR...

compare these two highlights

Can you see some similarities?

This is another level stuffs. Comparing the teams from two different levels. But do you see the similarities as they progress. The defense of each teams at a different levels is so dominant that we need no discussion.

If you look at the entire season....

They've been very good at keeping people out of the endzone in the 1st half.

As the offense stalled in the second half of games the defense has worn down.

Best ways for a defense to stay fresh.

Dominate time of possession on offense (Hawaii)

Force three and outs (UNM)

If they can add any type of pass rush next season this defense could be pretty damn good.

LOL. I think they're pretty good right now but next year....dont know man. Some players could be poached and coaches as well.

Our defensive coaches should be protected. Keep them intact.

It looks like we look half our D line 2 deep after this year. We will need help/people to step up there.
Also what about RB? Magyar and Reese are decent complimentary players. Neither are bell cow backs

Possible.

Although I think we retain OC/DC for one more year.

Defense is #82 overall and #62 vs the run..

It's getting close.

Name escapes me, the Oregon transfer might be the guy next year.
