Rebels on a 2 game Win Streak!

I think we could keep it close against SDSU in a low scoring game. Aztecs play UNR tonight. I hope SDSU wins. I would like another crack at beating a ranked team this year.

Nope, we got a long way to go!
Now if we win out, then I would be thinking that.
Hawaii wasn’t a good team and the Rebels were ready to play. This wasn’t “coaching”, imo, not necessarily. A bad team at home beat a poor team that’s worse on the road. I’m just glad we stayed focused. The early score; the turnovers. And as great as Chuck was, the defense was solid after the first few plays. Hawaii helps with that, but I give some credit to our guys. It’s almost like they are learning they can win …

I’m just happy. Losing in every sport week after week after week … man, it’s just old.

I thought the defensive coordinator called a very good game. The Looks UNLV were giving Hawaii forced Hawaii to play pretty conservatively despite being down in the second half.

Thought the play calling on offense was solid.

Road the run game. Gave Friel easier reads to get him comfortable, after a rough start. Play conservative, but took enough shots in the passing game to keep UH honest.

Not predicting a win vs SDSU, but they are a live dog...

Winning out will be tough...

Aztec defense is solid.

Air Force at altitude no fun either.

If they can split, I'll feel a lot better heading into next season..
I think we stand a better chance of beating SDSU than AFA. Looking forward to Friday night.

Totally agree...

SDSU's offensive struggles let teams hang around.

With Air Force, every TD they score feels like 10 instead of 7 because they typically eat up so much clock..(They limit your number of possessions.

Not sure if that makes sense...It did in my head when I typed it..🙂

Win one more game, and they double the 1.5 games they were going to win this year!
A lot of tough losses throughout the season we could/should have won if depth was there. It’s tough to be 0 fer and knowing the hot seat is there as a first time head coach. Hopefully the win last week creates a more loose head coach where the close games become wins instead of overthinking and trying to do to much and shooting yourself in the foot.

Not ready to hand him an extension..

But he cooled the seat off some.

Just like young players, coaches can take some time to figure it out.

A lot of positives to take from tonight.

1) Defense. Outstanding. We gifted Hawaii three short fields on turnovers and the defense manned up and help them to 3 points. That game could gave gone south quick.

2) Chuck.

3) Friel. I know. He was awful to start the game. But he bounced back. Got comfortable. Made some big throws to keep some drives alive. Never put the ball in danger again. Showed a lot of composure in bouncing back.

4) Coaches...I thought they called a great game on offense. Fed Chuck. Played conservatively, but took enough shots in passing game to keep UH defense honest. The Hansen the defensive coordinator called a great game. After that first big play, Hawaii couldn't muster anything. Rebs gave them a lot of different looks. Took their best player #7 almost completely out of the game.

I'm not sold on Arroyo by any stretch. But I do think this team is close to becoming competitive week in and week out.

College football is at least 50% recruiting. If he can keep getting top three MWC classes he'll turn into our most successful coach since Harvey Hyde.

He needs a solid winning season next year to have a chance to keep it going.

I was clearly kidding about the extension. I do feel this is the best team we have fielded in quite some time, the team has played the last 6 games give or take and could as easily be 6-0 over 2-4. (Except for Nevada) Late struggles after being competitive all game caused losses in close games. It takes time to create a culture of winning when it matters, a few wins and it just might flip that switch.

Totally caught the sarcasm..

Agree with all of that.

It's hard to look at 2-8 and see a lot of good.

But they've been in all but 2 games, ISU and Reno.

ASU game got away from them but they were in that one for three quarters until Brumfield went down.

Not happy about 2-8, but there are definitely some things starting to come together.

It does! Haha... Although I do have to say, that's kind of how most of our touchdowns have felt this season. In the games we were very competitive in (the wins, plus EWU, SJSU, USU, UTSA), Rebel TOP is probably pretty impressive.

Friel made some freshman mistakes and I think Bull you are right about forcing it against
His home state team.
But they didn't trust Friel much which is why Chuck got the ball 3 out of 4 plays. Now he did pretty well with the opportunities that they gave him, but they certainly limited him after the first quarter.
I think Arroyo wants a significantly more dynamic offense. I like a lot of what Friel brings, but he feels like a steady "game manager" type, while I think a guide Brumfield looks more like a game changer, creating more.
I think Arroyo want to have a very dynamic offense and to be fair the O Line, specifically with pass protection is what it holding that back the most. But barring a huge transformation there, I think Brumfield makes us more dynamic in the future if healthy. If he gets that redshirt. Could he be a freshman again next season? At least still an underclassmen.
Friel is young and can maybe grow more into a game changer. He isn't the most mobile and struggles in the pocket at times. Though will improve. But Brumfields legs and his big arm intrigue me more at right now at least

All things equal, Brumfield.

Mentioned this before.

Friel had no senior season. He just turned 19. Was expected to RS.

Offensive line play has been bad. In turn Friel has developed a few bad habits.

Friel has a good arm. He is accurate. Puts the ball in stride. Tough dude. Short memory.

Arroyo did get 'conservative' (if you are churning out yards on the ground I don't view it as conservative, its smart to keep pounding the ball) but Friel made 2 or 3 big throws on third down to keep drives alive. He's got some moxy. They still threw the ball 25 times in the game.

Agree Brumfield more dynamic.

However, I would not be shocked if Friel wins the job next year.

Best comparison I can make, I think Friel might become what we thought Nick Sherry would.

What about this scenario:

Our recruit QB redshirts.

Rogers transfer so we bring in a JC or D1 transfer.

3 QB’s compete for the starting job.

How am I the only one who sees this? Someone make me the HC in waiting!

Alright Rebel-Netters there is joy again. I'm in Costa Rica vacationing caught the Cal game not the Hawaii game. So happy when I got logged in to see we won. Winning is just as contagious as losing.
We met a nice midwest couple from Michigan UM fan and Ohio State fan we talked football and basketball I don't know if it was the booze but they had many nice things to say about UNLV didn't look down their nose at all look forward to playing us and enjoying the city.

I don't think Arroyo wants to hand the ball off that much, to pretty much only one back mind you, from the shot gun.

He did what he needed to do to win the game and it worked. Not criticizing him for that, at all. But you know that isn't what he would prefer to do.

I do like Friel and understand his youth and lack of recent in game experience. I just think foe this offense Brumfield makes more since with his legs/arm combo. He opens on the road option more, he makes happen when things break down. He has the biggest arm on the team.

Friel may be a bit more accurate at least with shorter throws. And he has a lot to offer. I wouldn't be terribly surprised he he won the job next year either.

What about the other incoming freshman from. Hawaii? He is a pretty heralded recruit himself. Does he have a shot?

I do think Rogers transfers or stays cont behind a 3rd option. I also won't rule out Tate if healthy and a full off-season to get the playbook and learn. Though not betting on that one.

Outside of Andy Reid and Mike Leach most coaches would be just fine handing the ball off and dominating a game between the tackles.

Probably don't want so many touches for one guy, but you would definitely be content hammering the ball.

Martell is at WR the last few weeks.

My guess he might be done after this season. I do not think he is in the QB mix going forward.

Not saying you, but I don't understand the infatuation with Martell.

He hasn't played any meaningful snaps at QB in like 4 years, and by meaningful it was mop up duty against Rutgers.

I would not be surprised to see him and Rogers gone after this year.

Liberty kid is similiar to Friel in skill set..

Arroyo did what he needed to do to win the game. He rode Chuck to victory.
I am glad he did. Especially being in the building myself. But for the future that is not going to be the blueprint for success. Otherwise some of the other backs would have taken those carries.

I am not infatuated in Tate. But he has had an uphill battle for sure since arriving on campus.

Getting over big injuries while trying to learn the playbook late isn't easy.

Someone said he has the most accurate arm on the team which I don't agree with because there is no real proof of that in games at this level. Not while at UNLV for sure. But again he has had injuries.

That being said, his potential with particular skillset seems to fit the system quite well. Being moved to WR right now makes sense given the unlikely chance he would contribute as a QB this year. We've seen that before. Qbs change position then come back.

He could leave, again. But I don't think he has many options. This felt like a last chance, at least D1. He may retire. Who knows.

I'm not expecting Tate to do anything here substantial, just not writing him off just yet.

A QB who can throw and run. Brumfield is that guy and UNLV needs that type to be a team that goes to Bowl games, year in and year out. Friel manages things pretty well but a game manager will get us 3-5 wins per year depending on schedule and that won’t move the needle for UNLV football, Arroyo as a coach or the city of Vegas or in other words attendance at Allegiant stadium.

I'm not sure Martell's issues are any worse or more difficult than Friel to be honest.

I wasn't saying you were infatuated, people in general.

I'm not sure Arroyo is married to any particular QB style. Hebert, was a big guy with ok mobility. (Not comparing Friel to him).

Again, I think Brumfield is more dynamic, but I think there is a lot to like and room to grow with Friel.

I'm not writing Tate off, I just don't think he's in the plans in the future. At least not at QB.

Think about it. Brumfield out. Rogers has struggled, next in line is a walk on. And Tate moved to WR...

Not exactly a ringing endorsement.

Would not be shocked if they look for another QB in the portal.

We'll see..It will be an interesting battle in camp next year..

Did you visit the Cocal Casino in Jaco Beach yet on your vacation in Costa Rica??

Nope, we got a long way to go!
Now if we win out, then I would be thinking that.
The win against new Mexico could be downplayed because nm sux so bad. But this one against what's probably an average mountain West team definitely counts in the win column. To me it's a legitimate win.

These two wins have at a minimum keep us from going back-to-back losing seasons which I think would be very hard to bounce back from.

Ok I have to correct myself. Hawaii is not an average MWC team. They are worse than average... But hell, we win our last 2 anyway

Friel is a huge kid for the QB and he is pretty steady. Solid all around. I don't mind if he is the next year's QB1. He is durable and seems to understand his limitations. I like it. UNLV defense will be the difference whether or not we're going bowling next year.

We beat up on the “dregs“ of the conference and that’s why I stop short of saying we are figuring things out. But if we win the next 2 games, then I will start to say we are gaining ground on figuring things out. We have some work to do.

It is not just win or loss, the coaching staff have figured things out. Hoke and AFA have been doing their things for years now. While this is Hoke's first year as SDSU HC, he has been there before and he has been on that staff for awhile now. Arroyo haven't even finished his 2nd year yet.

I don’t see it? What has Arroyo figured out other than recruits that’s more important than wins and losses?
