Congrats to Randall on being named to the college football hall of fame. I loved the way Randall played, I was a huge fan.
Only saw him live once as a little kid. Neighbors took me because they had an extra ticket. The Silverbowl seemed another state away since not much else was out there. Even as a little kid, I was blown away by him.
Growing up, I wasn't loyal to an NFL team. I liked players, I liked styles. Loved the old Raiders with Jack Tatum and Dave Casper and Kenny Stabler. That was my first "favorite". And ironically, I also loved the Chargers a bit later because of Fouts, Winslow, Jefferson and Muncie. Being from Chicago, having personally met Walter Payton, Dick Butkus, Ed O'Bradovich - yeah, I liked the Bears. Especially when Buddy was DC.
But I did heavily shed those others and gravitate towards Cunningham and the Eagles. The Rebels were in their heyday - and I was anywhere an Eagles game could be found. Loved the way Randall played, so exciting, you didn't know what was coming next (good or bad). But they always fell short and underachieved despite some really good teams. Met a lot of Eagles fans back then, one became a good friend - he was from Philly - he was so excited when UNLV got Rollie... Lol.
Once Randall finished up, my interest in NFL quickly dried up. It's funny. Along the way, I dropped interest in pro sports because my favorite players finished up. I don't know that it was that as much as it was the games/players changed so much (to me) that the last vestige of my interest was in my favorite players. Dr J... To Barkley... And the Rebel threesome in the NBA.... After those players finished, so did I. With baseball, had Jeter not arrived, I think I would have hung them up after Mattingly. But Derek kept it going (thankfully) for the next 20 or so years.
Randall had the same impact for me with football.
