Question of the decades

If you asked me last year..

I would have said decent chance.

But with how fast this thing is moving now....

I think its doubtful.
Big 10, ACC, PAC 12 joining alliances against the SEC and to have a say concerning the college football playoffs as we speak, it’s going to be tough for UNLV.

I think there was a window. I think UNLV had some of the needed requirements (Med school, upgraded facilities etc)

The landscape of college football has been changing over the last 10-15 years. It's been headed towards 'Super' conferences for awhile.

If this goes the way it appears the gap between haves and have nots just widened.

I hope I'm wrong, but it's starting to feel like too little too late.. At least in terms of P5 acceptance.

In my opinion it will shake out to be something like the Power 5/6 and everyone else. Everyone else would mean all the rest of the conference's would become something like current Football Championship Series conferences. I think the Mountain West conference would be somewhere in the middle of that group.

At which point many schools may be forced to make some tough decisions about the viability of their football programs long term.

Article on ESPN with quotes from Big 10 imply academic qualifications, culture, alumni, and how much tv you bring to the table will decide who survives and joins the Pac 16/Big10/ACC. ESPN has a vested interest in killing Fox Sports. In long run, tv bids will go down because no one outside of the South wants to watch the SEC all day long. Basketball is the wild card as it is really BIG in the Big 10, Big 12. UNLV looks better for basketball alliance because of academic qualifications, tv market, existing facilities.

You look at the crowds..the product over the past 20 years...and then you just shake your head at reality.

I say it's 50-50, need a AD who has connections and really can get out there with the President of the University, selling the school, everyone knows about the city.

I look at the Big 12 Remaining schools
Ok State and WVA have biggest Football Programs, then Iowa St and Texas Tech, both Baylor and TCU are Religious schools.

If Big 12 stays, I think Houston is given and Maybe UC, if they wanted to go to divisions say 16, I invite BSU, UNLV, Aztecs, Houston and UC and maybe Memphis.

If I am AAC, I try to get Ok St, Texas Tech, ISU for Football and get both Kansas and K-State and call it a day, unless they want to have East-West with 20 teams, then you could add UNLV/BSU/SDST. CSU brings nothing to the table, Colorado owns the state, CSU can't even come close to selling out the new football stadium, they bring nothing, UNLV is way better, TV location, it's about expanding to have the right fit, having medical school and good Academic Program is a value.

We will all know something by next Summer, especially 2025 is 4 years away.....Let it shake out, Incompetence of the UNLV athletic program is going 30 years strong.

Maybe Lon could be in-between the AD and President, he has a lot of connections, let him work it behind the scenes, but what the hell do I know.

Stay safe, I was in hospital for 6 days earlier this month with bad Staph Infection in my blood, I had 4 COVID patients around me, the Delta Variant is nothing to play around, enjoy life to the fullest, and just maybe we UNLV fans will have something to cheer about in Football and Basketball this year, it's been over 40 years since UNLV had decent football program, I seen how Vegas will support a winner and it's cheap ticket compared to NFL/NHL.

Go Rebels.

I think UNLV is definitely left out if the remaining Big 12 gets absorbed by other power conferences, especially if a new separate power league is formed.

Honestly, I think most of the G5 teams will be left out.

It could leave a middle league, while disappointing, could still be worth participating in. Lets be real, UNLV was never going to truly compete for a national championship in football. A separation like this defines lines that were practically already there. Being in a league where they could be more competitive wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. It would hurt TV revenue, but I don't think it would change much. We would just continue in a similar position.

However, if the Big 12 tries to survive on their own and recruit teams to join them, UNLV has an outside shot. Whether it is Big 12 or Pac 12 ( less likely).

The NIL is a blessing to a school like UNLV. It takes heat off of schools from paying players directly, something that UNLV would not be able to do. There is potential for other businesses/boosters to step in at times.

If a separation occured, I think basketball would be affected less, but still affected. The NCAA tournament isn't going anywhere I think. Mid majors play a big role there. Also given Bball has smaller teams, investing in a few players to be competitive could be possible. I think there may be ridiculous money thrown at college players initially, but I can't seeing that being sustained, save for a short list of players. Truth is, athletes are the most marketable at the highest level, so until they prove themselves as pros, there will be a ceiling. Plus I can't see boosters/businesses shelling out millions of dollars year over year. There just isn't enoudh ROI.
