Question about Offense or Defense

I never played organized football but as a red-blooded American who grew up on the NFL I’d have to say an offense due to the skill positions and number of schemes that can be implemented.

I lean that way. But then I think..Defense has to have contingencies for every situation/formation/motion etc.

I think it's an interesting topic.

And not sure there's a right answer.

In most cases, offense. In our case, defense. Everyone on this team has run a spread or defended a spread at some point of their football journey.

As far as defense, we held a base 3-2-6 that sometimes rotated into a into a 4-2-5( just as a look) and on a couple occasions a 3-3-5. Coverages may be similar, but the philosophies will be different. Though the base scheme will look different, who covers what and how they cover will be different.

Scherer was a linebacker, and emphasized linebacker aggression; be it Woodard coming down, or blitzs being faked with Lb motion for a corner/ DE to come in. Traps and stunts will have to change accordingly as responsibilities shift around.

I don’t know what Arnett will do differently from his other stops. Fair to say he’ll run an odd front, but I am guessing his DBs will be taking more of the load off the Lbs.

In this case- the defense. You have to have the right players because the 3-3-5 relies in them to becquick, agile, and aggressive. You need 3 good DL men and smart linebackers. On offense, most every offensive player out there has played in the spread offense. It's easier to pick up because of that.

Posted in another thread I think Pope will play that Hybrid spot in the 3-3-5. At least that's where I think the staff envisions him playing.

Fast enough to play in coverage. At 200lbs can come up and play in the box as well.

He'll be that Javin White type of tweener, except slightly faster, and slightly shorter. He'll be fast enough to catch fast guys, and agile enough to avoid bigger guys. Biggest difference if these scouting reports are right is that Pope has a second gear to chase people down.

You might be right here. This is a defense that tends to want to be aggressive and dictate things by confusing QBs by giving different coverage looks, disguising where pressure is coming from etc. A standard cover 2 is a bit more read and react to the offense with 2 deep safety help to keep things in front of you. Rely on your front four to generate most of your pass rush.

Caleb Herring discussed it on a podcast and how much he hated playing the 3-3-5 Ricky Long's in particular.

I would say offense is more difficult. Just because the defense is ALWAYS ahead of the offense in spring ball and camp, and often in the first few weeks of the season.
Much more to learn. Defense is more about positioning, basic assignments, and being able to react.
Many offenses may be similar, but most have their own nomenclature to learn, plays may have reads, hot routes, quick audibles, etc.

Looking at the way CDM and Rocky Long explain their offense and defense, both looks intricate and filled a lot of layers. Both are difficult.

As a scheme I love this defense and it's versatility.

I've always preferred 3 man fronts getting more athletes on the field. Especially in the spread offense era.
