What are some of your takes on the QB situation for next year? Do we go with someone already on the roster? Or do we go the portal route again?

Apparently our RS freshman from El Paso looked really good in camp (drawing a blank on his name).

But for sure we would be bringing probably at least 2 transfer QBs to compete.

I'd guess a big part of it will depend on the coaching situation.

Does Odom leave? I hope not, but if he does, it's an entirely new staff, so most likely the new staff would bring in a couple of transfers.

If Odom stays, but Marion leaves, that would be interesting to see what Ochoa does. If the new OC runs a totally different offense, Ochoa may look for a different home, but that's just a guess. I know HMW is out of eligibility, but I'm not sure on Friel. He's been at UNLV 4 years, but in 2023 he had very limited playing time, so could probably get an extra year of eligibility if he wanted to.

Ochoa plus portal and grad transfers to battle it out.

They found a guy from FCS Campbell that has moved the offense well. I'm pretty sure they'll be able to find another QB

As for Marion leaving.

I stand by..

He's an incredible play designer.

He's an above average play caller.

He was the archtect of the Go-Go offense. But like any other offense it will get copied, tweaked etc.

Under Odom we had Petrino only to lose him and land Marion. Marion leaves Odom has enough ties and connections to find another OC.

I mean, theres not really much difference between the Go-go and the RPO spreads that most OCs are running these days. So unless we get an OC that runs a pro-style set, I imagine the offense will remain very similar.
As for QB, I believe we probably go out on the transfer market and get either a 5th year guy again, or a Junior with a few seasons left. Cant see us trying to run a redshirt freshman when we would enter season potentially Top 25. Plenty of solid P4 guys who are either going to over recruited or replaced with G5 upgrades. How about Miller Moss?

Let’s face it …. Under Odom/Marion, UNLV will be an attractive option for a lot of players, especially skills players. The Sluka thing - even that making headlines and turning heads … a 3-0 quarterback leading the Rebels towards the rankings …. His back up comes in and keeps things going … even though it was “bad news” it can send a strong message to those wanting PT … Ricky does everything, that’s a big attractant …. Jacob is tiny but used everywhere, lowly recruited and he’s making a name in this system …. RB’s, you might not get a ton of touches, but you will get touches …. And then on the defensive side, a walk on that becomes a stud at LB, DB’s grabbing tons of INTs, super active ….

And the team is rising, rapidly. You’ll get some that want to jump on that train, imo. UNLV has never been more attractive and even though UNLV doesn’t have tons of NIL money, it happened at the right time (transfer without sitting an year) and UNLV can take full advantage of it.

Gael Ochoa (3 star) will be a RS Freshman next year, the only other QB on the roster is Lucas Lenhoff who is a walk on 2 star and will be a RS Sophomore and was recruited by Florida Atlantic and Mount Union and had some nice stats his senior year but is small with limited athleticism. We have Garyt Odom (3 star) coming in next year as a freshman who is more a dual threat type of QB but is also on the small side.

I would assume that we're looking to bring in an upper class QB who will get to compete with and edge for the starter.

If Marion stays I bet there are at least 30 FCS and a dozen FBS QB's who would love to come and have the opportunity. We won't have our choice but it will be close to it.

I’m sure we grab somebody that’s a fit, someone who comes in with a year, they can run as well as throw, it’s not going to be a classic drop back guy … they’ll get what they need and I feel it will be high quality. Then you can have Ochoa as a freshman next season, get him in game reps and see how he does …. Get a great feel for his future potential running the sets …

Then the following year is the decision … go again after the experienced QB that figures to start, or go with Ochoa ….

Maybe I'm delusional in my fan hood but I think there's a chance the NIL money gets a decent bump and some new contributors after this season.

Of course. Unless of course Harper's phone rings and Brent Yormark from the BIG12 says..

'Great news Eric'

At that point...I could see some bigger money players get involved.
Vs top 25, our primary allure won’t be NIL.

That’s where having an attractive system and playing time can balance the field somewhat. Plus, we are kind of a “darling” right now.

What about that Uiagalelei guy from Florida State?

I kid.

I would not get attached to anyone in terms of QB. The OC, Marion might be hired as HC somewhere else and if that’s the case, some guys will leave including Ochoa.

That’s fine and understandable that Marion has the HC itch. Hopefully Odom gets another extension and stays, I trust his coaching Rolodex. One name to throw out is Connor McQueen from incarnate word. His offenses are always moving. Young, worked under Chip Kelly and Lincoln Riley.
