Portal Thread without music

Currently there are only three players in the portal:

Matthew Sluka - long gone
Michael Allen - do not think he was going to play much next season
Greg Burrell - I hope they can get him back

For a team that has lost their coach, it is crazy UNLV so far only has 2 new players in the portal. The average number of players in the portal by team is currently 12.8.

Most of the players that were contributors were seniors. We need to replace a lot like a ton.

MWC players by team in portal:

Air Force: 8
Boise State: 7
Colorado State: 6
Fresno State: 12
Hawaii: 10
unr: 11
New Mexico: 28
SDSU: 17
SJSU: 5
Utah State: 19
Wyoming: 7

Burrell is going to get a very nice NIL deal and UNLV may not try to compete with it, they are focused on some bigger fish at the most important position.

If Hotel California is in the portal I really hope this staff makes a run at him.
Ok no more...

All seriousness, I think UNLV will be in the mix for some high end prospects at the QB position. We may see another FCS guy in the mix as well but more in a depth capacity.

Some of how they approach it is Mullen's feelings on Ochoa and whether he wants him or he stays at all.

If Ochoa is out then you'll need 3 if not 4 QBs brought in.

A little guessing on my part it will look something like..

Unproven P4 guy that was highly ranked but hasn't won a starting gig yet.

A G5 guy with experience to compete.

An FCS or JUCO for an extra arm in camp.

And attempt to flip a HS prospect.

You want to layer your eligibility a little bit so you aren't in this spot again next year.

UNLV have lost 7 or 8 commits for '25 thus far. Add that on top of Grimes, Allen, Burrell, Sluka and whomever else played this year. Sluka and Allen left in the same week.

Edit: here is a list of decommits from 24/7. Most commit and signed with Purdue right away. It is cool, I would rather have them follow CBO than anybody else within our conference.

Fair but we will see guys above our typical pay grade who commit with the new staff.

Yup! UNLV dropped from 1st to around 4th or 5th in the MWC for the 2025 class due to the number of de-commits. 7 or 8 sounds about right. Hopefully they can get a few of them to come back.

I noticed they are all from the southeast area of the country.

With losing BO and hiring Mullen that ranking was bound to change. I have to believe Mullen will get enough portal guys of decent caliber to where we will be okay. Mullen better hire some good recruiters.

Mullen is going to be a great recruiter by UNLV standards. The most recent equivalent will be like Dave Rice. Like Rice you can tell he is genuinely excited about UNLV which will make it easier to pitch and land recruits.

I liked Rice. I believe he picked up the UNLV job too soon in his career. He wasn't quite ready for it. On the other hand, Mullen has several key people who he could ask to visit UNLV, or even from a far mentor a kid to greatness. Our portal is going to be very busy with incoming and outgoing. I don't think Mullen will wait until his staff is in the building to start getting splash commitments.

I am expecting to start hearing staff members announced this week after the bowl game.
I dont think Mullen wants to cause distractions for the team before the bowl game. But expect quite a bit of news once it is over.

It’s terribly broken.

Think back to 9 months ago … you know it was a brotherhood, everyone on the same page, you got each others back. You feel it, you believe it, you give it. And you fight together through the spring and summer and the fall.

And after that commitment, you bail on your brothers.

I’m not blaming the kid, but man, I couldn’t do that myself. At least I hope I couldn’t do that. It’s feel like an ultimate betrayal to my brothers, my coaches and most of all, to myself.

The system is broken. Really broken. Adjust where you can. What’s wrong with the portal starting on Feb 1?

There is no Bag in Team. This is becoming a Bag sport. It's all about the $$$$$
That kid was the back up QB. And it just came out that the PSU starting QB is coming back for another year, as opposed to going pro. I can't really blame a kid for wanting to get the opportunity to play. He's going to be sitting the bench next year, as it looks right now. Yeah, it would be nice if guys would earn their keep and their playing time, but if you're stuck behind an elite talent, that's tough

Bad idea. That would limit the rights of student athletes to transfer midyear. If head and assistant coaches can interview for new jobs before the end of bowl season, then players should be able to transfer midyear.

IT sucks 1000% ,but there has been some rare cases where players play in the last game and something bad happens. They do need to play all games if they were given NIL money or have some kind of buyout to leave. A deal is a deal.

I don’t have the solutions, not in tune enough with the process. But what’s happening right now isn’t working well.

If I were an AD, the schedule for buyouts wouldn’t be Dec either. I’d make them in January so they have to pay an extra year if they poach and coach would finish the bowl season.

To be fair, this isn’t the sort of thing UNLV has had to deal with often, the whole bowl thing.

The players enroll in school in Jan. A Feb portal eliminates their spring ball chances?

Yeah but I believe if they can tweak the NIL rules and portal dates, as well as bowl schedule so it’s all properly aligned then CFB can and will be more popular than any pro sport in America.

The NFL is gaining steam in terms of ratings but to me, it’s not as interesting. There’s not a lot of good storylines in the NFL, it’s gone too corporate (as has the NBA but that’s a different thread).

To me the Deion Sanders, Lane Kiffins, Kirby Smarts. Travis Hunters, Jeantys, Jackson Woodards etc are more interesting people than anyone in the NFL.
