Pastner's contract

If this is the case, he agreed to it, he must believe in who he is now and what he will bring to the table!

Prove you got this, I think a little more highly about Josh’s intentions here now!

"UNLV's new men's basketball coach Josh Pastner has signed a five-year, $4.8 million contract that is backloaded.

The former head man at Memphis and Georgia Tech will make $500,000 in the 2025-26 season before that salary rises to $1 million in each the next two seasons before escalating to $1.15 million for the final two years of the contract. Pastner also is due $50,000 retention bonuses if still employed by the school on April 1, 2027 and April 1, 2029.

Pastner will make $250,000 each year in base salary with the rest of his compensation coming in media and public appearance money. Pastner's buyout to break his contract starts at $3 million before lowering through the life of the deal. UNLV would owe Pastner 75 percent of his base salary and media money if he was fired before the end of his contract, which is March 31, 2030.

Pastner replaces Kevin Kruger, who was fired after four seasons on the job. Kruger made $775,000 last season, which ranked seventh out of 10 Mountain West coaches whose contracts were public. Pastner is 276-187 in 14 seasons as a head coach, including seven each at Memphis and Georgia Tech."

Georgia Tech is still paying him, at least until next season. His buyout was 2.6 million or something at GT and they pay him for the duration of his contract with GT, which 25-26 was the last year of his deal.

Structure wise it makes sense that it is backloaded. This is Pastner helping out UNLV.

But $50K if he wins the national championship? Seriously? Why not a bag of fries?

I wouldn't think that contract will do much to improve the reputation of the program.
Its a very year 1 friendly deal for the program to offset the costs of the buyout for Kevin and the fact that we dont have a university president to approve coaching contracts. The year 2/3 escalation signals an expectation that theres a jump in performance. Hes being paid to rebuild in yr 1- no one complains about paying 500k to fix things, then he goes up to middle tier MWC coach in 2/3... which is when the expectations raise..

I think this is a fair contract, and we let GT still pay part of his salary.

My only gripe is that buyout isn't big enough. We USED to have buyouts the entire worth of the contract, hell we somehow finagled to give Kevin MORE than the worth of his contract.

I get it, it protects us if he sucks, but it hurts us if he succeeds. Maybe we aren't convinced he will succeed?

I think in regards to the structure and bonuses, let’s remember that Harper was just excoriated over the Mullen contract as well as the CKK contract.

To me it looks like they’ll revisit the contract after year one, or if it’s real successful Pastner is a goner (usc or ACC school will call).

That is true about not having a President to approve I forgot about that but does he approve or the BOR?

Probably a case of you can't have your cake and eat it too. Yeah I will work for pennies but then my buyout is pennies too.

The $50K to win the title strikes me as weird I mean I know the chances of that happening are about the same as Rebel Robert being seen again in a sailor's outfit but you can't out a big number in there for appearances sake?

Well again, you’ll have the LVRJ demanding how that’s covered and if the money is in an escrow etc.

Not worth it. Harper likely has a handshake agreement that this will be reworked next year when things are more fiscally clear.
