Pastner

Watching this it is apparent he will probably bring on 10 new guys this year. I like his excitement about the portal since this is the world we live in. Now assemble a good staff and get people excited about UNLV BB.
Out of all the guys mentioned in the search, I think he fits what we need right now the best. We need a recruiter and a kick in the ass. Doesn't need to be the best x/o guy or program builder.

Like I said earlier it is an upgrade.

But he is in the same mold that we have had over and over again. Recruits well, but underwhelms when it matters. He was ranked in the top 10 and lost in the first round of the tournament. Has never made it past the first weekend.

This conference has eaten up coaches like this. We will probably do decently in the OOC, but the MW coaches will pick us apart in conference play.

When I see aggressive defense for turnovers, I see taking taking chances on the defensive end that will lead to twice as many wide open shots than steals and deflections.

I see prioritizes transition, means we will push with the few opportunities that we will get, which I like, but I see us struggling and stalling in the half court. Also with his "emphasized guard play". Sound like more hero ball to me, with minimal half court structure.

I was hoping to get a guy that finally runs a system that can adapt, relies more than just talent. Because these days we might be able to out talent our conference, but we won't be able to out talent very far in the tournaments, that counts the post season and the pre season ones.

He does have good qualities. Hopefully he has learned from what has failed him in the past. Perhaps he can get a staff that can help improve where he struggles. I would imagine he he a long list of assistants that he could pull from.

I am hoping for the best. He does seem like the guy that can help raise the NIL. He can probably line up some players that would make it worth it. Lets all hope that he can capitalize.

In some ways this is the MOST UNLV hire ever. Get the same kind of guy we always get.

Problem is he CAN’T coach. His X&O’s has NEVER improved, I wanted a coach that plays chess not checkers!! We basically got Coach Rice all over again. Seen this movie before, does not end well. He is 5-20 vs top 25 teams, total red flag, will get exposed by sharper coaches especially in conference play.

How did we not get Olen or even Hodgson, is the UNLV job that undesirable!? WHAT A TOTAL LET DOWN 👎👎 C- grade (and I’m being nice)
Our NIL was not adequate...

OMG!!

Ya’ll annoying as ****..

Whining & bitching because we didn’t hire Phil Jackson & or Pat Riley as our head coach..

Our program once very illustrious is now a very very very mediocre bottom feeder in a shitty conference..

Who the **** knows how Olen & the dude who went to USF will turn out.. could be good.. could be bad..

But ya’ll are acting like Hodgson is this slam dunk can’t miss coaching prospect when he has only been a HC for 2 years & yes he did very well at Ark State.. but ya’ll acting like he is the next Pinto…

Let’s give Josh an opportunity to coach a game here before saying he sucks & doesn't deserve it..

I am optimistic that things will be really good with him..

P.S. since ya’ll think that Hodgson is can’t miss.. & ya’ll are all knowing..

Let us know when the next Megabucks is going to hit & where so we can play it..

I don’t know if Hodgson will be good or not, but I am confident that Pastner won’t be good. I’d rather have the hope. I’d take an up and comer any day over someone who has underperformed at two different schools. Memphis desperately wanted him out and he was terrible at GT.

Hope I’m wrong, but this is very close to the same feeling I had with Menzies. Slightly more positive on this one though.

You don’t know if Hodgson will be good… but you are confident that Pastner will be awful?

Based of what?

G-Tech is an absolute shit job that nobody can win at since Hewitt left in the mid 2000’s.. (take away Paster’s big dance appearance in 2021 & Tech hasn’t made the NCAA tournament since 2010.)

Memphis wanted to get rid of him? Okay & how many MILLIONS & MILLIONS of dollars have they pumped into Penny’s program since then & for what results? To win 1 tournament game & a couple of conference tournaments?

That would be considered super successful at UNLV but at a program like Memphis with Penny? You think that they are happy with that ROI? They lost to CSU in the tournament this year as a 5 seed.. completely underachieving there..

Pastner will do great here.. just watch.. or not..

That’s where I’m not understanding the complete confidence. I can see where people say Josh will be ok or Josh will suck because he’s done both.

The other guy has 50 games under his belt, an extremely small sample size. And while I can understand people being excited about a style or his coaching tree, nobody has seen Ark State play, yet there’s a supreme confidence in him.

It’s just a lot of guessing when these guys have no relevant sample size to draw from. Josh has a huge sample size, if you think he sucks, that’s valid because at least you have a decent data set to choose from. But a ton of confidence with a limited sample size in poor leagues?

Have you ever heard a coach say another coach or assistant isn’t good?

Quotes like this are just …. Typical media stuff.

Exactly my point..

Nobody saw Ark State play & yet people are convinced that Hodgson is the next Rick Pitino just based off an extremely small sample size.. albeit successful sample size..

I don’t hold G-Tech against him cause it is a shit program & nobody can win there..

Hopefully the 2 years off did Josh well.. & he comes back better than ever..

Dude isn’t even 50 yet & people are writing him off as a lost cause..

That is what is driving me crazy.. just how negative people are.. when they have zero clue..

Since Rice got fired.. we have absolutely been an unmitigated disaster.

Hopefully Josh can be our FEMA & fix us!

My expectations: 3rd/4th in the MW next year, 1st/2nd after that... (and that would be with the MW as it currently stands, not just 1/2 because almost all the good teams are leaving...)

I have to see our roster and how other situations in the conference shake out. Colorado State lost their coach, roster overhaul is likely. New Mexico and Utah State could lose their coaches.

We’ll see but there’s a good opportunity to have a quick turnaround.

Theres no reason why it shouldn't be a quick turnaround. If he is a talented recruiter with these great contacts and well liked then he should be able to field a team that can win the MWC in year 1. Im tired of excuses and when you make a hire that feels like a last resort with these credentials Im not giving any sort of slack...

Seems this fanbase will never be satisfied. “Fire CKK!” (right decision). “Anyone is better than CKK!!” CKK fired, new coach hired. “New coach sucks!” “More of the same BS!” UNLV sucks!!” And we wonder why the program and the school struggles. Not taking away any mistakes UNLV has made over the years, but the fanbase reflects the larger perception in the community that UNLV can do nothing right and everything wrong. This negative approach continues to drive the perceptions that make it very difficult for the University to thrive. Not the greatest environment for success. We’ve got to turn this around and we’ve all got our small piece of being part of the change or being part of the continual tearing down of the institution. It’s not about settling or providing a fair critique, but for F’s sake the ink isn’t even dry in the contract and folks are already tearing down instead of building up.

I think there’s a good chance and every opportunity to compete for the conference.

But we also have to realize and understand the mess this program is in. When the program is at 6-7 in the conference, something is very wrong here. It’s unacceptable.

It’s going to take a lot of work and effort, energy to turn it around. Is it going to be perfect? No. Pastner was hired because Harper needed somebody that’s tireless and will outwork everyone in the business.

I don’t know if the previous regime was turning over every rock or trying to get every penny. It just seemed like a low energy program the last 4 years.

I don't mind this hire. We could do better, but we could've done a lot worse. As far a quality HC hire this is the best UNLV has hired since Beard, and will be the best hire to actually coach a UNLV game since LK. He has a lot to prove to himself and others. I like that. He brings a type of play the fans have wanted for a long time, tough D and up tempo O. I'm optimistic, but certainly grounded. Just want to see UNLV turn this around after 10+ years of mediocrity.

Football was even worse a mess and look what the "Harper" model did for it.. I will absolutely expect to make the tournament in year 1. There are no excuses when the conference gets 4-5 teams without batting an eye why we cant be in that conversation. 0. You hired a friendly well connected coach who can recruit with the "experience" to lead a program to do just that.

There’s zero enthusiasm with the men’s basketball program, no shiny new stadium or practice facilities to obscure the SUCK that is unlv basketball.

2k people are showing up to games, players don’t care about the program, everyone was just going through the motions. The team didn’t even do stretches in the early season, then a rash of injuries happen. Total incompetence.

We should be able to increase attendance significantly, win 20 plus games, get past Thursday at conference tournament/be on bubble watch for NCAAs. Get some pride going.

Actually i hate the lakers and bulls so i was hoping for K.C. Jones or Chuck Daily.

My opposition of Pastner comes from friends of mine that are die hard Memphis fans, and all the negatives they have told me about Pastner over the years. For these reasons i think this is a bad hire. Better than Kruger? Not hard to do but one of the worst thing we could do is hire someone and have the attitude of 'well at least he is better than Kevin'. That is what this hire impresses me as.
But with all this said i will cheer my ass off for Pastner amd hope he is a success and can pull UNLV out of this crappin rut we are in. After my bitchin and moanin about him is over i will 100% support and cheer for him as long as he is coach for the Rebels that I have loved and routed for for the past 48 years.

If he’s good, he’s gone!
We are a G5 school, can’t compete with P4.
We will get Odom’d in both sports in about 1-2 years if the coaches are good, just the way it is for us now.

We are still a coaching graveyard for basketball coaches!

It will be interesting to see who he can get as assistant coaches.

I am just a bit disappointed in the fact that it looked like we were going to hire an up and comer that apparently played to a particular system, who could also recruit. It looked like we were changing the approach a little which to me is something this program desperately needs.

Instead we got another recruiter that has struggled to compete at the highest level, with seemingly more of a "free" system, meaning little offensive structure. I am sooo sick of this.
And with recruiting dependent on NIL money more than any other factor these days, it handicaps his biggest strength.
This model has been falling out of favor, with even the master, Cal, finding less and less success with this approach Though he is in the S16 with his worst seed ever as a coach. And Cal could get them to play pretty good team ball.

All of that being said, it does at least seem that JP started to change for the better while at GP, with some different approaches and improving results.
And I do like his emphasis on defense, which does make the importance of great offense a little less.

I still think you need both to advance in the tournament.

The good news that this conference is ripe for the taking, It was ripe this season and we got worse. But with Medved and Pitino leaving, the path is arguably better. SDSU and USU will be better, and Boise will be Boise, UNR could be good or bad, hard to say but I think Josh can do well enough, be "new" enough in this swan song of the MW year to challenge for a league title.

Then the new MW will be even more winnable. I do hope that GCU can hold on to Drew and keep them good, we will need it, until we hopefully bolt for a different conference ourselves.

I'm waiting to hear what Lon Kruger has to say about this hire.

Two points:

1. Georgia Tech is the San Jose State of the ACC. That's just how it is and they will not compete against Duke, NC, Syracuse, NC State, Florida State ect.

2. Not talked about. But I feel Paster will work have a positive impact on UNLV's NIL. He can work a room and should do well in raising NIL money for his program.

I would say that GT is the Fresno State of the ACC. But you have a point.
Totally agree on point 2. I think he can raise NIL himself with his personality.

Well i bought LOTO tickets again. If i hit i will help one way or the other. LOL. IT really hard to be optimistic with the NIL culture anymore. Im sure he has a ton of connections still and by the sound of it seems people that KNOW are on board with it. Back loaded contract so he is HEAVILY invested into winning loved/liked his interview he did right before he was hired.
