Was a waste of a scholarship at UNLV!
Not sure if irony or not, but if he was a wasted schollie, then what about Cottrell, Whiting, Whaley, Evans, Bannarbie all of whom were less productive than Pape last year--hell, if output is the metric than Hicks was also a disappointment for his productivity given his minutes. Kruger had a lot of whiffs if Pape was a waste. Was a waste of a scholarship at UNLV!
I have no idea what KK's substitution pattern is, but I know historically he's got that slice of Lon where he clearly starts subbing based on vibes.Nobody is denying the potential but when cottrell is taking your minutes in the conference tourney…yikes.
Of course CKK never really developed anyone on the roster during his tenure. Just never worked out here, Pape probably needed new scenery/fresh start and UNLV already filled the 5 slot.
Yeah too many centers at UNLV is a bad thing..Nobody is denying the potential but when cottrell is taking your minutes in the conference tourney…yikes.

In truth is, it was a waste of the entire team this last season! I am not the only one that feels that way considering how few people went to their games. This was the first year in a long time that I didn't go to a single game!
If this is just raging against the transfer portal, then I would say go ahead and scream out your anger and then sort of accept that's the way the world works in college hoops now--transferring will be just as common if not more so than retention.
Maybe KK had no idea what he was doing and Pape should have gotten those minutes instead.Nobody is denying the potential but when cottrell is taking your minutes in the conference tourney…yikes.

The Center or Williams?Guys. We severely whiffed in nearly every aspect of recruiting. Not everyone but the percentage was way too high. And not only that, our “best” get … well … he’s good but let’s just say he has heart/brain/character disease, and we “sold out” for that get.
I think that comment is based on Dedan if I had to guess. The Center or Williams?
I knew it wasn’t cryptic.I think that comment is based on Dedan if I had to guess.
Lateral switch is a good way to look at it.. One definitely has more pro/higher ceiling potential.. Neither is going to be the 30 minutes a game starting center you want to have. Both are still raw products and will need to develop. But we do know what Pape was able to do with virtually 15-20 minutes per game.... We don't know what Stephen will do with the same playing time..I think we made a bit of a lateral switch. Pape has something there, as he is essentially upgrading while our new AZ big is down grading. They are very similar players so it is a bit of a wash in my eyes.
I don't see it as a huge upgrade by any means.
IDK, his minutes dwindled as the season went on. At some point you have to produce to earn minutes. Of course, the system or whatever “coaching” there was clearly not a benefit. I think he would’ve transferred anyway if CKK somehow held the program hostage and kept his job.Maybe KK had no idea what he was doing and Pape should have gotten those minutes instead.
I learned a long time ago that when players don’t play, it’s not always because they aren’t good enough. There are reasons we don’t see or hear. The surface is all we typically get. And there’s more to it.IDK, his minutes dwindled as the season went on. At some point you have to produce to earn minutes. i was hoping it was not DJ. Yea i could see he was playing for himself. IMO he is going to have a HUGE wakeup call playing against the BiG boys and most of all the FANS. They will lambast him if he does not live up to his NIL money.I knew it wasn’t cryptic.
Didn’t fool you.
You aren’t getting it. He’s a good player, he won’t make the league. He’s trying to maximize his career now, when the pay rate will be at its highest. Winning, losing, dominating, being dominated? It doesn’t matter. He gets paid.i was hoping it was not DJ. Yea i could see he was playing for himself. I get all of that. I was worried u were talking about us not landing players THIS year and the one we did sign might be a problem. As for DJ maybe it was better he left anyways. Played for himself. Maybe it was CKK contributed to it?? Was not a team player. There was not a lot to like this year. DJ was one of them. You aren’t getting it. He’s a good player, he won’t make the league. Wouldn’t you love to go to work today, do little work and still get paid the same? Or fake an injury, not work and still get paid? They have one motivation and they’re playing the system like everyone else. This is what happens when you open up Pandora’s box. It sucks for fans, but not for the players and guess what? We “care” about them way more than they care about us. L
Just spare me the Legend and loyalty talk. They aren’t the first, they won’t be the last, but they played UNLV and if it wasn’t UNLV it would have been somebody else. Fans can give them thanks for two years of blood, sweat and tears on the side of UNLV if it makes them feel better, call them loyal, call them a legend, call them a Rebel at heart, forever a Rebel - but you’d be fooling yourself. Ed O’Bannon won a national championship at UCLA and trust me, he has more Rebel pride.
Might be on to something here, maybe a Keyshawn Hall situation, we have seen this before with Kevin and star players here!I get all of that. Since it cost the tax payers for their scholarships, housing, food, etc.. maybe it is time to treat them like sub-contractors and not students. Remove the scholarships, do not require them to go to school anymore, and set up so all of their living expenses are paid only if they stay in the school for the length of the signed contract. If they leave early, then they owe all the money spent on them as well as interest and damages for not fulfilling their contract! You aren’t getting it. He’s a good player, he won’t make the league. Not watch anymore. It isn't a matter of ideology or attention span, it is a fact that this is not sustainable, sooner or later the courts will be involved, or 90% of the current schools will close down their athletics over the next 20-30 years, or they will go to a lower division that doesn't offer scholarships to athletes! Not watch anymore. We have a FB QB that leaves, so you think it was the player, the coach, or both? We blamed the player, but what if a coach promised something to him unbeknownst to the head coach? Who you going to blame, kid or coach? I still blame both.I get all of that. I was worried u were talking about us not landing players THIS year and the one we did sign might be a problem. and dont forget there's a 3rd party now with financial interest in kids transfer yearly for paydays... All the "NIL Agents" that are using kids to collect their 10-20% fee have incentive to advice their clients to look for bigger paydays. We have a FB QB that leaves, so you think it was the player, the coach, or both? We blamed the player, but what if a coach promised something to him unbeknownst to the head coach? Who you going to blame, kid or coach? I still blame both.
Any bb player defection, it’s going to be both sides to some degree, imo, when the dust settles.
I’m just saying it’s what the game has become. Remember “idolizing” players? Having the utmost respect for them. That’s pretty dead. Once the lions share of kids finished school at a different place than they started (it’s always happened to some degree, but now it’s always), the game went to shit. 4 year players? Doesn’t happen much anymore. Can blame players, can blame the coaches, but it’s just the way society is, the culture of athletics, the de-evolution of what once was.
That's disappointing to hear but not a shock, at all.I knew it wasn’t cryptic.
Didn’t fool you.
Four years at the same college? Try four years at the same high school. We have a FB QB that leaves, so you think it was the player, the coach, or both? Slowly moving to four high schools in the same year!Four years at the same college? Try four years at the same high school.
Agreed!I don't blame DJ for playing "selfishly". Just because he is played exactly like every other lead guard we have had under Kevin Kruger. Hard to blame him for not sharing the ball when it seemed to be very clearly NOT a focus of the offense under CKK.
I do appreciate that he stayed home for a discount. He didn't have to do that. He also upheld his 2 year agreement ( minus a few games). He could have left after year one as well.
I don't like that he sat out the last few games, that was weaksauce.
