Does anyone know if Otzleberger's SDSU teams were physical enough to protect the rim or relied on a " Westhead " run and gun style where defense wasn't a high priority ?

He did run a transition offense (centered around spacing and three-point shots) without much defense. I assume he will be much better here on defense, since he mentioned it at this presser, and will have better athletes here.

One thing about LMU that people forget is that they did have defense, they often pressed for about 3/4ths of the court. It wasn't their strength, but they did cause a lot of turnovers with it.

You are correct. Forgot all about their press and the Hank and Bo show was sure fun to watch. Evan though Tark's teams were run and gun, there was always a Mo Scurry or Richie Adams around to shut down the opposing teams inside game. Menzies never had an enforcer like that.

Fwiw, when was the last time the team was actually good on both sides of the ball? And how many UNLV teams had a good offense in the last 10-20 years?

Even the Kruger teams which were good defensively tended to leave a lot to be desired on offense.

Of course defense is a huge deal, but if the team has a good offense in the next few years it’s a HUGE step forward.

All valid points but a high octane offense requires a top point guard. Tark had Ricky Sobers, Robert Smith, Mark Wade, and Greg Anthony. All of them were great pg's at the collegiate level. Lon had Kevin Kruger for a season { just ask Bo Ryan how well that worked out } and Oscar Bellfield for four years. Lon's pg's were good but not great. Since then, we have had transfers who couldn't even compete at the MWC level. Our pg's, since Lon left, wouldn't even have been the best players at Sunset Park.
