Bill would give UNM, NMSU athletics $2.5M each to fund NIL
Three state senators have filed a bill intended to help level the playing field for UNM and NMSU in the ever-changing landscape of college athletics.
I didn’t like paying the Aces players $100,000 each. Why did that need to be done with taxpayer funds?I’d vote no. Why should taxpayers be compelled to pay for NIL?
I understand your point. But apparently, New Mexico has experienced a boom in oil revenue. Also, I guess we are at a point where State Schools are going to have to make tough choices. Either help fund NIL or the potential shut down of D-1 football. from the article:I’d vote no. Why should taxpayers be compelled to pay for NIL?
I don’t agree with that either.I didn’t like paying the Aces players $100,000 each. Why did that need to be done with taxpayer funds?
I am not saying whether either of you are wrong for your thoughts on this issue. However, could it be that there are tremendous revenue potential and jobs directly related to Las Vegas becoming a sports mecca? There was a 2022 white paper published by UNLV on this very topic and in 2022 there was over $1.8 Billion in revenue was raised from out of towners related to sporting events. I have no clue as to what is related to the Aces winning the WNBA championship. But IMO this is much bigger than the ACES and directly impacts UNLV and the push to gain entry into the Big 12 and why it appears LVCVA and The Resort Ass. are getting on board with UNLV football. The Raiders and UNLV football will generate a lot of $$$$ on alternating weekends if UNLV is a member of the Big 12.I don’t agree with that either.
I hate your answer and, despite my hatred of using taxes to fund this, I know that it costs money to make money. I'm conceding that I think that you're correct about UNLV, Raiders, and VGK. (I don't think this about the Aces... maybe the A's will make more sense to me once I see it in action).I am not saying whether either of you are wrong for your thoughts on this issue. I don't know the answer. But I have lived in Vegas over 40 years and watched all of the changes. Ultimately, the industry leaders appear to get it right despite the growth of gaming across the country and Vegas just keeps rolling!

I can't see tax payers being told they are going to help make mid level teenage athletes millionaires when many of them already struggle to pay for college for themselves or their kids!If you asked me about this bill 10 years ago, I probably would have opposed it....but...I'm a bit indifferent. I can see both arguments
It's always been a joke what casinos pay in taxes sorry they aren't going anywhere if you boost it. Maybe they should be given a nudge to increase their UNLV athletics generosity or you may see some bills suddenly pop up supporting those tax increases.I think we as taxpayers give up enough to have these professional leagues profit from favorable stadium deals. The casinos reap the bulk of the benefits while paying a relative pittance in gaming revenue taxes compared to other states. If we were to help fund NIL it should expire the second we get into a P5 conference.
Yes!It's always been a joke what casinos pay in taxes sorry they aren't going anywhere if you boost it. Maybe they should be given a nudge to increase their UNLV athletics generosity or you may see some bills suddenly pop up supporting those tax increases.
And what politician is going to end his or her career on that hill.... it'd be cheaper to get that person voted out of office than donate more to UNLV.It's always been a joke what casinos pay in taxes sorry they aren't going anywhere if you boost it. Collusion, get enough politicians to support it and what are casinos going to say in their attack ads? Politician X wanted casinos to pay more in taxes? Support this politician instead who wants to keep casino taxes nice and low? The vast majority of voters won't shed any tears for casinos having to pay more in taxes. And what politician is going to end his or her career on that hill.... it'd be cheaper to get that person voted out of office than donate more to UNLV.
I like this because it’s true! LolCollusion, get enough politicians to support it and what are casinos going to say in their attack ads? Politician X wanted casinos to pay more in taxes? 👏🏻Put a picture of our rosters on the check-in counters of each Hotel. Add a 25 cent room tax to compensate the players. This equals $ 12 million NIL funds.

The stadium deal taxes came 100% from a new tax on those Casino's not a penny came from the rest of us!I think we as taxpayers give up enough to have these professional leagues profit from favorable stadium deals.
