Odom leaving for WVU?

Definitely not shocked if this happens. He has done something at UNLV that I thought was impossible and with that comes a lot of opportunity. The next hire will be the most important hire in UNLV FB history.

the WVU fans commenting on the X post linked above aren’t too excited.

Sound fake, I don't believe Odom would even look or consider another job until the season is over! As for WV, that isn't exactly a great job considering their history.
Well I'm sure his agent has told them what he expects and they must be on his short list. NIL money already lined up. They don't wait until offseason to get the ball rolling. Teams want their next HC asap to prepare for the offseason. Too much at stake.

Didn’t WVU finish second one season? They are a solid school and I’m not just saying this because I have a lot of family who went there.

Agree.

It's a place you can win.

Anybody here view KSU, ISU, CU as some type of unbeatable gauntlet,?

Big12 is the weakest of the power conferences. Let me rephrase that, I think they are on par with the ACC, but the potential top end of the ACC with Miami, Clemson and FSU is better than the BIG12.

With every conference champ getting a seat at the table, WVU is actually not a bad job at all in my opinion.

I was going to post this question before, but it really seemed his demeanor changed the last couple weeks with press meetings. I’m probably looking too much into it, but he has seemed very depressed… looking at the media and talking with a look of guilt in his eyes…even frustration. Again, probably looking too much into it, but it was my gut. I hope I’m completely out of my mind.
The post I was going to talk about was - after his time off and going to see his son play… he did not seem the same Odom at all. It’s a long season and I’m sure he’s drained, but something is not right. I know that for sure.
Might be simply life/family issues we all go through… something seems off.
Again, hope I’m an idiot…. Hope he and all his family feel really genuinely loved by the community and more than welcomed… and a huge part of the Valley!
Hope the valley steps up to keep the one shot they have…

Since joining Big12 in 2012, they have had four seasons with 8 or more wins and a record of 87-72.

And UNLV was even worse...

Big12 is wide open. No reason WVU can't compete.

I'm not saying it's a great job but that's a conference that is up for grabs.

They also pay double what UNLV currently does.

Not saying Odom would leave or if this rumor has any legs. Just that it's a decent job in a conference that's got a lot of similiar level schools.

Yeah unfortunately it seems like the type of job he would leave for. There would be less pressure there as well in comparison to other jobs. Plus someone he worked with before.

Having been to West Virginia for a game, I can tell you there would be a ton of pressure. Especially from fan base.

Their football fans are very much like UNLV basketball fans who think 30 years ago was yesterday and the things they did under Rich Rod should be easy to replicate.

That said, BIG12 is wide wide open. It's essentially a bunch of middle of the pack P4 football programs. That's not a knock. It's a super competitive conference. Just that there isn't a top dog with Texas and OU gone.

Would anybody be shocked if Oklahoma State bounced back next year? Or Baylor and won the conference next season?

It's decent job, WVA is not great state in HS, WPA he has to compete. Against PSU/OSU, that said he can win there, fan base bunch rednecks, I know from previous WVA/MD games, lol
If the bag is there, I wish him well. He brought UNLV winning football

Love Odom , but there are coaches out there that can hit the ground running that we can replace him with. Has to be right fit..won't be easy , but doable.

Can we stop over analyzing and asking these questions every time someone on X mentions his name...
1- He doesn't leave just because they have more money. He leaves only if he believes WVU offers him the best chance to lead a winning program to compete for championships...
2- WVU ain't that. It'd be a step back from UNLV, even if they throw 5 million plus at him..
He's been very honest about the $$ and it not being the only thing that impacts his decision or job opportunities. He's already been in charge of a P4 school, he knows the pressure to be more than just good. Also he's in the middle of trying to get our school into the Championship game, against a tough schedule, navigating the whole Sluka stuff, flying to Arkansas for one of his kids games, then to Hawaii... can you blame him for looking tired.. tough job

How is a POWER 4 job in a very winnable conference a step back for him? I'm not saying I think he wants that job or would leave. And even if one isn't necessarily motivated by money an extra nearly 2 million dollars isn't something somebody doesn't at least consider.

The BIG12 is wide open. Seriously did you have BYU potentially winning the BIG12 or Oklahoma State being this bad to start the year?

Hell KU is a couple scores away from being a one or two loss team and being in the mix. Houston upset Kansas State. There is a lot of parity in that conference.

With the way the BIG12 is structured now, there isn't a lot dividing those schools.

Again I don't think this rumor has legs, but I also think it's pretty shortsighted to act like a solid coach couldn't get a school like WVU back in the mix in the Big12 and the CFP.

Or that it's a 'step down' from UNLV.

I didn't say step down, I said step backwards...
Sorry, but the Big 12 isn't as wide open as it appears... Utah, Kansas having down seasons, but that's not likely to be the case in the near future... easily Both Kansas schools, BYU, Utah, ISU, Colorado will continue to lead conference and then there's everyone else. WVU isn't likely to crack that top 6 even with Odom. At UNLV, you win the conference there's a good chance you make the CFP. You have fairly new facilities, money, and growing potential and are likely going to be the class of the conference for the forseable future..So yeah, WVU is a step backwards

Backwards or downwards or lateral, same difference.

We are in year two of UNLV being a solid program. There is the potential for UNLV to continue to improve or stay at this level. But NIL money will need to be improved at some point.

We keep saying UNLV wins the MWC good chance they make the playoff.

Yes this version of the MWC. I'm not so sure that's the case after next season. The conference won't be viewed the same. We replaced Boise, Fresno, SDSU, and CSU with UTEP. A team that has struggled in CUSA. It's is not the same.

Over the last decade it's not like KU has had more success than WVU. I think the Big12 has a lot of schools with similiar floors and ceilings. WVU was 9-4 two years ago. Just like KU was last year.

Their current coach is making $4 million. If they fire him he'll get $ 9.75 paid out over the next 3 years. Pay Odom $ 5 mil that would be over $ 8 mil annual commitment. I bet they stay with this guy for another year to get his buyout down.

Dammit!

WVU is very similar to Mizzou and Arkansas in terms of culture and fanbases. The money is probably there not just for Odom but for the entire staff.

This is real crappy news.
