NY Times article and Augmon

I can't say if Augmon would or would not be a good hire for UNLV, I can say that this is a very poorly written article by a third rate hack. This article strongly infers that UNLV is a racist school if it doesn't hire Augmon, otherwise why would they bring up
"The decision to pass over Augmon comes when many black coaches are complaining about their shrinking numbers even as the dependency on young black recruits escalates. Is it really a good look for U.N.L.V. to marginalize a candidate with credentials as impressive as Augmon’s?"
While I will agree that Simon has absolutely zero credentials to be the head coach, I wouldn't call the credentials of Augmon as anything near impressive. His being an assistant coach in the NBA for a few years along with an assistant coach on a staff that totally failed does not meet the standard of being considered impressive. Augmon would not even be considered as a head coach if not for his ties as a player to UNLV.
I will agree that IF UNLV can't find a top level coach who wants to come to UNLV, if UNLV or their boosters can't come up with the type of cash required to get a top level coach, then I would put Augmon into the mix as a potential head coach. Just remember that another experiment and UNLV may and up dropping from what is currently considered a mid level program in a lower level conference to a bottom feeder in the MWC. Oh, how the mighty have fallen!
