I liked Whaley. Maybe CJP could get more out of him than CKK (assuming he’s healthy).

Rob has got to appear as damaged goods. Unless they're looking for someone for the "airport team", it makes no sense to have gone in the portal. Riding the pine on a full ride is better than no ride at all.

This, and he had a average season the one he did play... No one is really going to be eager about an out of shape small forward with injury history that averaged 7.5ppg and sat an entire season who has 1 season of eligibility on the books remaining.
And even in his average season he was a poor rebounder and a wildly inconsistent defender and scorer. He had as many 0 point games as he did 15 point games. He never hit double digits in rebounds and had more Fouls than Steals + Blocks. When you add in the injury history just like in the pros, nobody is going to want to play for an inconsistent guy who is never available.
He will find somewhere to land if he goes low enough. Looking at what he brings to the table along with his pops, it is hard to see the value.

I’d be a little surprised if he played again. My mom happens to know someone who was involved with him. He was one of her favorites two years ago so she naturally asked about him. He’s got some mental hurdles to overcome when it comes to his back issues and rehabilitating from them. I just don’t see it happening but I sure hope he can figure it out. He’s got the talent.
Why would a P4 school pay boatloads of cash for a guy who is not game shape ready, has back issues as a big man and was mid-to average for most of his 1 D1 season..
Yeah his pops basically shitted on UNLV saying both staffs suck…. Gotta believe he wanted back and Pastner said no. I like Rob a lot, but he’s clearly overweight and it’s a big problem cause he can’t stay healthy.

I remember so many here claiming we got a BEAST …again, it was highlight clips and cherry picked stats that those people gobbled hook, line and sinker.
I had a trusted friend who watched him multiple times in JC. Undersized, variable motor, doesn’t defend well, not a good rebounder given his size, can dial in and perform well offensively if they don’t jab back first. Just inconsistent but usually subpar.
That’s pretty much what we got. NOT a beast
I don’t mind him on the team, but he’s a 7 through 10 spot on a team that wins. Not as a starter. Not as a primary contributor.
He was not a difference in KK keeping or losing his job.

He had a difficult time scoring over
opposing players his size same as Bear Cherry this year. Cherry was a bad rebounder for his size and always had a hard time shooting over someone equal to him although he did get off his little hook shot sometimes. He was also a bad freethrow shooter . Opponents would hit a 3 and we'd throw it in to Bear to get fouled and if lucky he'd make 1 of 2. We would consistently trade 3 points for 1.
Because he was beast blocking out and couldn't jump crap.
He should go to school like mid level small league he's not that good.

I’m probably in the minority but without whaley we would not have won that game. He had one job only. Stop Ledee. And he did a pretty damn good job of it. But yes, terrible rebounder for the type of player he should have been.

But this 2nd part was/is the problem with Whaley, no real hustle when it comes to rebounds and the low IQ as it relates to playing without fouling!
He, Cherry, and someone else on the team I can't remember the name of were foul machines (from how I remember them). Being slow and not in the greatest shape (for Whale and Cub) will cause that.
It seemed like all of our bigs were to “handsy” and always reaching and getting dumb fouls. Whaley, Cherry, N’Diaye and even Bannarbe could not stay on the floor. I hope Josh develops Bannarbe!
I'd welcome him back as our 14th or 15th player if he is well enough to practice. He's ok to provide others a strong presence to practice against. Only if he comes cheap.

I think you let him move on and recruit someone in the 6’10” or taller range! A PF or C but no need to bring back a guy who has all the issues Whaley has.
