NIU TV?

Good to know. I think every road game ought to be televised live locally. Don't know all the ins and outs of MWC TV deal. I do know that my Alma Mater, Youngstown State plays in FCS and manages to typically have all road games picked up by the local MYTV or CW affiliates. YSU plays football in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. It's associated with the MVC, but a football only conference. It's the top FCS Conference in the country, but it's still FCS compared to MWC being whatever the new name is for the former non BCS Conferences. I can watch every MVFC game online, either on the MVFC website or ESPN3. So, it's frustrating that the quality of the MWC telecasts online are often low quality and that local stations won't pick up the feed of UNLV games when not on one of the TV all sports channels.

If an FCS program in a Metro Area of 500,000+ can do it, no reason it can't be done here with UNLV. Most of the work on the broadcast is done by students majoring in communications. The quality for varies from school to school. YSU is among the best quality in both MVFC and HL. The on line telecasts for MVFC and HL tend to be superior to that of the MWC Pretty sad given the MWC is FBS in football and also considered a higher level conference in men's basketball. HL is actually higher rated in women's basketball.

Sorry for rambling. It just gets frustrating not being able to see every game, and also dealing with often low quality broadcast on-line. I think it's IMPERATIVE that UNLV find a way to get ALL road games televised and do whatever it takes to improve the quality of online broadcasts.

The confernces prior broadcast contract with CBS Sports and Versus (NBC Sports) would not only any other distribution regardless of platform (even web-based). With the new contract with ESPN and CBS Sports, the distribution rights fall back to the conference if a game is not chosen or broadcast.

The conference now works with a Campus Insiders, streaming sports network, to broadcast non-televised games. Last year, they picked up a lot of games and each university could also broadcast games if not picked up by Campus Insiders.

Oh yeah. Roots Sports is also broadcasting a small number of MWC games on their cable-satellite channel.

LasVegasReb,
Thank you very much for the explanation. It helps things make more sense now as far as why some games are not televised. As for the internet, it was still a rather crappy feed alot of the time. Hopefully the feed improves for this season.

I can tell you from experience that getting rights to broadcast games is a lot easier said than done. If you take a game that is not televised the AD at UNLV will tell you that IMG still owns rights and they want a piece. But getting them to communicate with you is virtually impossible. Then you have to sell the ad time to pay for gear, crew and satellite window. Then, you have to find people available to work your show in Dekalb, Honolulu or wherever, crew that are qualified. Students can handle certain jobs, but not all. On a Saturday during football season, this is challenging to say the least. AND you have to split sales proceeds with IMG.
Disclosure: I work in broadcast TV and have tried to do this very thing for basketball during TWO UNLV Administrations.
The simplest alternative is to stream the scoreboard feed, which would explain the poor quality. They are actually paid employees, so imagine how bad a student run broadcast would be!

Anyone have any insight if Campus Insiders or the MW Network plan to provide their streaming channels/games on devices such as AppleTV or Roku?

I have zero knowledge of this area and the costs of getting onto those formats, but it would be a lot nicer if stream-only games were accessible on tv-friendly devices such as Roku or AppleTV.

I think Campus Insider is on Apple TV and Roku. I've read a couple articles saying it's available on those platforms but I don't have either so cannot confirm.

It's on Roku
Cool. I'll have to look for it. Have you (or anyone) used Roku to watch a MW Network streamed game live?

I know some channels have Roku/Apple TV channel but don't provide live streaming content. Might just have to wait and see when season starts.
