Looking ahead at next year our roster will include:

  1. Maybe Shakur Juiston returns. If he graduates this year and has goals of playing professionally then he should just try to do that. One more year at school probably won't help him get into the league or play oversees. If he does return to school he also has the option to transfer.
  2. Nick Blair. He is probably on track to graduate this year based on his age, but if he does return do we offer him a scholarship or does he transfer? Another year of being a walk-on?
  3. Djordjije: Personally, I have been to Ukraine. Nice country, great people, where my wife is from. A college degree can really help this kid. But this is two years where UNLV has paid for his school and he hasn't been able to contribute to the team. As much as I hate to say it, he needs to be cut. Maybe scholarship opportunities for being a foreign exchange student or Menzies helps him transfer somewhere else?
  4. Cheickna Dembele: If he gets a medical redshirt approved this year, he could still be a junior next year.

Unless we get some transfers, it is entirely possible we have no seniors on our team next year.

If Menzies gets one more year do we look for transfers or continue the slow rebuild process of recruiting freshmen. Unless we get some 5 star freshmen that make an immediate impact, that would probably lead to only modest improvements next year. Most likely resulting in him then being let go.

But the new coach after that will have an incredibly experienced team that has several years of playing together without any egos or personal agendas. Those are the types of teams that seem to do really well these days.

Another rebuild season is a tough pill to swallow, no doubt about it. I don't mind seeing where the slow rebuild takes us. He gets one more year in my book. An incredible hot seat, one that will most likely result in his termination. But again, setting the next coach up for more immediate success.

If we fire Menzies after this season, a new coach will pretty much have to bring in a senior point guard. Historically, UNLV hasn't had a whole lot of success with those. And a new coach/point guard combo is a risk. So can see a new coach still only having moderate improvement. Probably resulting in fans being quick to judge and making his job harder after that.
