New Commit for Rebs

Me, too. Let's, see how he does with Dan Mullen.
Hope, he does well here.
Catalon is just wound up rubber band of a player. The dude got the knack for reading the QB while Grimes flushed the receivers his way. Fun to watch, though. But UNLV defense was locked down last year due to Grimes and Jet Elad play flushing it to the middle.

Elite programs like Bull Dogs are stacked and not just High D-1 prospects. They have NFL prospects. A little info on Pope. I feel this will be a very nice pick up.

"According to sources around the program, members of the Bulldogs staff are enthralled with Pope. They are recruiting him as a defensive back, but some believe he can also play receiver.
Pope’s athleticism jumps off the screen when evaluating him. He is a legit 4.40-second runner in the 40-yard dash and can run near a 4.00 short shuttle. He's a rare breed of both long speed and short-area quickness.

"He has adequate size at 6-1 and 190 pounds. His high-school team routinely throws him fade balls in the red zone, something that is standard operations for prospects much taller than Pope. That speaks to what a freaky athlete Pope is.

Pope’s ball skills are also incredibly impressive. He attacks the ball at its highest point and rips the football out of the air.

Austin views him as a center-field safety, but he could be a wideout in college. His ball skills will allow him to take the ball away from receivers in college.
He is a polished tackler that is not afraid to come downhill and deliver a hit. In his state championship game, Pope hit Lee County running back and member of South Carolina's 2021 signing class, Caleb McDowell, and forced a game-winning fumble in overtime.
Everything about Pope’s game is nuanced. He understands the minor details of both wide receiver and safety, which speaks to his work ethic. Many players that play both ways in high school don’t get into the little details of every position, but Pope does.

This is a polished prospect that Georgia is very high on. He doesn’t have a glaring weakness and will only get better in college.
Austin compared him to Houston Texans safety Justin Reid. Coming out of Stanford, Reid didn’t have any big holes in his game. He has been a starter for the Texans for the better part of two seasons and is one of the best young safeties in the NFL.
This is a “big-boy” recruitment. Pope is currently being recruited by programs like Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson and North Carolina.

The Bulldogs feel good about where they stand in this recruitment. Pope is reportedly high on the Bulldogs and it appears that he is a high-level target in this class."

This is purely a guess but looking at his size/speed etc...I think he may be looked at to play this role. (Of course the Aztec will be changed to Rebel🙂

In the 3–3–5 defense, the third safety is called the "Aztec" safety and has a unique role:

  • Versatility
The Aztec safety can drop into coverage, pressure the quarterback, or act as a "Mike" linebacker in run support.

  • Uniqueness
The Aztec position is considered one of the most unique in football. The Aztec can blitz the quarterback from the "A Gap" one play and then cover the deep middle third of the field the next play.

  • Presence
The Aztec can be a presence in the box to support the run game and cover every skill position player.

I like this pick up a lot. With some of our recruits so far I get nervous when I see our competition is Alabama State but a guy like this buried in the depth chart for teams like AL and GA absolutely worth signing.

I wouldn't worry too much.

I think there will be a balance of productive FCS and G5 guys with solid production, plus some P4 'prospect' types.

Outside of Colandrea and the WR pick up its going to be tough for UNLV to compete with higher end P4 schools for transfers. Our NIL situation is better now but still have to be smart with how they disperse it. Camac for example, would have been great to keep but likely would have cost UNLV too much. So you let him go and hope you can make it up in the aggregate..

Not really looking for competing vs high end P4 but more like the Houston's and Kansas' of the world. Our NIL is similar/higher than some of the Big 12 teams, I would be curious how they end up spending that though we will never know.

Our NIL may be similar but our revenue sharing won't be close.
Decided to take a look to see where we were, and you are right. The 22% of revenue is what will be divided by athletes.

NCAA Revenue Sharing
Estimates 2025-26
Annual
Revenue
22% of
Revenue
Kansas89,242,31919,633,310
Nevada-Las Vegas29,750,8076,545,178
Houston 22,060,3734,853,282

Houston is the outlier, because I was using data from before they joined the big12. I am going to keep an eye on it to see how much it balloons by being in the big once they release the data.

Someone, maybe Bull, said moneyball to describe our operation and that is correct. If you remember the movie, it was never about just getting cheap players, it was about finding value from different metrics and watching games nobody really looks at.

This means looking at a lot of tape and pouring over every report. It’s no different than the nfl draft, players slip through the cracks and it’s CDM’s job to find those guys. The NIL component gives UNLV leverage over the Boise states etc.

There’s zero reason why UNLV cannot represent in the playoffs for the G5.

Did you say metrics? Bull is going to be

To simplify it all. (And I'm terrible at math)

Say UNLV has $100 in NIL to spend. UVA has $200

Camac wants $25 dollars in NIL money.

UNLV can afford it. But it eats up too much of the NIL budget. So you pass on it. You go grab 3 guys for $10 each and hope you get better through the aggregate.

Speaking of Moneyball, get used to that.

Ladies and gentlemen, your Las Vegas A's!
The people that be went way all to in to all in. There is going to be so much saturation of sports teams to watch that will take away from all of them. Wait till they get a NBA team here. There is not enough of a population or even tourist that could off set it. No other cities close enough like in Cali. I guess only the strong will survive. Hope UNLV finally goes all in and let the chips fall where they may. Looks like they are trying only time will tell.

In the 90s, when it was discussed about bringing in pro teams, there were a lot of crazy proposals and with those proposals come studies. My favorite was the silver bowl near downtown where the current world market is. It was supposed to a near replica of the super dome in New Orleans. Though I could be wrong.

Anyway, those studies showed that corporate community wasn’t keen on supporting pro teams and preferred the keeping the usual tourist experience (magic shows, tigers, dance shows etc). Over time, more companies moved to Las Vegas and seemed more feasible.

All the decades that I have lived in Las Vegas it was always that professional teams would not consider Las Vegas due to gambling, now that gambling is everywhere, that is no longer an issue.

Sounds about right. Some day we will see the CFP committee discuss starting their own gaming site. They wouldn't want to leave a dollar hidden if they can get to it.
