Because you dont expect the Athletics department to pay the full dollar amount. Hes expecting boosters to step up for coaches, that's how its done at major universities as well. UNLV has been so inept at football for years that were still cultivating those booster trees, but once they get roots, hopefully our program grows..I figure it’s common to not have that sum of money totally accounted for, like taking out a mortgage on a house. But man we are banking on a lot of increased revenue for ticket sales and whatever we get from the MW/PAC lawsuit. I don’t see how we fire Kruger facing that $2.35 buyout and now this coming out. I do remember Colorado not having the funds secured when they inked Dion’s contract, but they found it:

As for basketball, again, its a pissing match going on between the AD making a dumb mistake and boosters disagreeing that they should cover the difference for that mistake. Im sure itll sort itself out, but someone is grinding an axe against Harper right now with these recent pieces...
I agree… not everyone will be happy, but I think Harper is the best AD we’ve had in a long time. Maybe I’m in the minority on this, but he’s overseen the complete reversal of football at UNLV. I lowkey think he wanted to jump to the PAC, but the president said no we don’t have the funds to do itBecause you dont expect the Athletics department to pay the full dollar amount. I agree, someone is trying to create division.Which is absolutely HorseSh!t.
Harper has been the best AD we have had in decades. The Odom and Mullen hires may be the 2 most important hires in terms of impact outside of Tark.
Were the salaries for our former coaches all covered in a type of "escrow fund?" If not, what's new? What’s with the hit pieces?
I don’t click on Akers articles since he’s a shill for the A’s and whatever else the Sun tells him to shill for. I’m guessing that this article needs more context. Do we have the money in the bank now to cover the two years of the contract and will accumulate more in the coming years to fully cover his 5 years? Something is being left out.
When we buy first homes, it’s likely that none of us have the total amount of money to pay it off completely right away, or why else would we take out a mortgage? Unless we are an Ivy League school with billions in an endowment fund, nobody has the money for many years down the road of expenses.
Always. Time for a southern nevada congressperson or senator digs into either eliminating the BOR or splitting it between Northern/Southern NV region. Were the salaries for our former coaches all covered in a type of "escrow fund?" If not, what's new?
It’s almost like the reporter for the RJ has never run his own business before.

I’m not sure how any of us can defend a 30 million dollar deficit though.Years of sub par reporting from the RJ. Vanilla coverage of UNLV at best.
Suddenly these dudes are uncovering Watergate.
It’s not just the salary issue. It’s the fact the budget report has us maintaining a 27 million dollar deficit for years and years. I don’t know what the answer is, but this is bad. Were the salaries for our former coaches all covered in a type of "escrow fund?" If not, what's new?
Cost of doing buisness in college athletics.. it's pretty easy to justify. Just look at most universities that are competing and they're running deficits.I’m not sure how any of us can defend a 30 million dollar deficit though.

I was thinking the same thing. Are the regents pushing this stuff? What’s with the hit pieces?

I understand most are running some sort of deficit but not to this extent and if they are, it’s the big boys in the BIG or SEC. This is egregious for a program like ours. I say this as someone that was on here saying let’s run a deficit and have the school that’s already heavily subsidized make us whole. At this point it’s almost like the athletic department has to roll the dice on a new BB HC and generate excitement and get us a better product so people actually attend the games. I didn’t go to a single basketball game this year and some of y’all will flame me for it, but I just refuse to spend hundreds of dollars to watch us get our ass beat on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Have gone to all but 3 football games the last two seasons since they win and put a good product out there.Cost of doing buisness in college athletics.. it's pretty easy to justify. ASU just gave their athletic department 51 million dollars to help cover costs. If you want to be a big brand and nationally relevant/make it into the next league of super conferences and the financial rewards that follow, you have to spend money and spend it now. There's no tomorrow for athletics, you dont get to play it safe. Universities that want to compete have to be willing to support their programs and thats what UNLV should be doing.I understand most are running some sort of deficit but not to this extent and if they are, it’s the big boys in the BIG or SEC. Why would there be another round of realignment? The big boys already hate the current set up and want even more money. Hate to be doom and gloom but our opportunity has come and gone and we were never seriously considered because our leadership has been terrible and our athletics have been even worse. I admire your optimism, but I simply can’t get there.ASU just gave their athletic department 51 million dollars to help cover costs. Getting attendance number up is a nice way to cover some costs, but ultimately, if UNLV isn't in a P4 conference after the next revolving wheel of re-alignment, it wont matter. I dont think theyre worrying about hiring a coach just to fill seats, theyre trying to make all their brands as successful as possible and unless Harper decides going all in on football is the way to do it, and he might be doing just that, you spend now, you win as much as you can in this 4-5 year span, and you ultimately hope that showing the huge investment in your programs gets you the interest that you want and need.
The total lack of investment in this entire state has been a clown show for decades and it starts with the disproportionate number of older Boomers and silent generation not wanting any of their tax money going to bettering the state/city.The Board of Regents in Nevada has always been a collection of political wannabes with ambitions. As soon as they get elected, they stop representing their constituents and only factor in their political interests and goals. It's why the NSHE has always been held back from reaching its collective potential. UNLV's financial problems are of their own making, and it's pretty rich some guy wants to roleplay Ronald Reagan while lambasting the institution that has probably suffered the most under this system. A total circus.
Ask all Cal-State and UC-Schools about their deficits.I understand most are running some sort of deficit but not to this extent and if they are, it’s the big boys in the BIG or SEC. I think we can all agree California is an absolute clown show.Ask all Cal-State and UC-Schools about their deficits.
The state is a political joke and they turned some of the most beautiful places in the country into literal crap.I think we can all agree California is an absolute clown show.
Point being while UNLVs situation isn't great, go do a quick Google search on WSU's current debt. It's well over 100 million dollars and they are scraping to figure out ways to bring it down.
On WSU's Athletics debt. Yep we spent somewhere around $165M on our much-need stadium upgrade and Football-only building. Arguably spent too much on both. Chopped out 2-3,000 seats along the way. All based on paying for them with the massive revenue stream promised by the Pac-12 Network. Which never happened. Now we are totally F-ed.ASU just gave their athletic department 51 million dollars to help cover costs. Because in 2032, new media contracts are coming. Realignment is coming.. Follow along. Super league is potentially coming. Why would there be another round of realignment? Agree, its one of the things that attracts students. other schools probably do it as well. UNR did it only because the new AD convinced the new University president(former governor and alumni) that they needed an extra 10 million to balance the book in her first year there and he gave it to them. Theyre now projecting a 10 million dollar a year deficit even with that added support. Universities need to invest in athletics, plain and simple its better. On WSU's Athletics debt. I actually kind of like ASU's approach. If I recall, they basically decided that Athletics was such an integral component of the University's stature and appeal (it is to any school), that it didn't make sense to insist on making it profitable. So roll it into the overall budget and deal with it.
