Line ‘em up: Predictions and Game Thread Memphis

Watched the no screen offense and was sick to my stomach for the effort was there. Good group of athletes who missed some wide open shots, but lack of tempo by Thomas is killing this guard oriented offense. Need more quick under 8 second shots or this team will get bolloxed in the last four minutes by better athletes and compliant refereeing.
It’s the same offense as always. The system creates zero shots. It’s all player created shots and you need high level talent for that to work, not just one or two guys. If you don’t have enough talent, you better have a system. We don’t. It’s bland. Predictable. It’s dribbles. It’s soft screens. All the times Utah State beat us, AFA, even CSU to a degree …. Most other teams. They don’t p
Out-talent UNLV season after season. But they outplay us, by getting shots from within a system. They stick to their plays and execute. We dribble. Soft screen by a non-threat player.

It’s bland. It’s lame. It’s been his offense from day one.

Too bad bc this group could be dangerous with the right coach/system. None of the players are great with the exception of DJ but a solid system or solid coaching would give them a real shot. I was down on the team coming into the year but they have better balance than last year, more outside scoring threats, and stronger guys down low. They just need the coach and staff and do their job.

When you dont have the talent that many teams have it is imperative to find easy buckets. The easiest buckets are usually off fast breaks before the defense can set up.
Unfortunately we never push tempo, never pass ahead, CKK wants us to pass the ball back to DJ & then he will usually dribble that ball out front till there are 10 seconds left to create a shot somehow.
Gonna show my age here but I used to love watching Wes Unseld grab boards and throw outlet passes to half court. We never look for those opportunities.
Vanilla offense, vanilla defense, vanilla coach. The reason I go to games is That I love the game. Spent most of my youth pounding the rock. I love the sound of the ball bouncing & the shoes squeaking. .

Grabbing the initial rebound and quick outlet passes are the key to running. I love the quick outlet and then the hit ahead, no dribbles taken at that point. The real Rebels, obviously, did that incredibly well.

If this was a new coach, I might argue with you, and say to let him have a chance to show us what he can do, but I feel like I am watching groundhog day where the same thing happens day after day and never changes!

this isn’t a Kevin thing.

It’s a lost art. You don’t see many doing it.
The visuals are just not there. I dont know any of the nuisances of CBB or very little. IMO if things dont improve and they dont want to $ on the next HC. Just get a great recruiter or a HC known for his coaching that has PROVEN himself on a smaller school.

This!

But either way get rid of the guy, he has shown us all who he is, and he ain’t a good coach!

I like the make up of this team. From what I can gather through the first two game, we are trying to get DJ into more of a scoring role which makes sense as he has that ability. The problem with that, especially in the Memphis game, it is coming at the expense of his assists. We won't win many games when DJ has zero assists as he did Saturday. This is the freshman leader in nation in assists from last year. I credit Memphis for really putting the clamps on him as soon as he got the ball. We'll see a lot more of that. He has to find a way to still dish. Overall, while disappointed we lost, I'm optimistic for this group. Loved the size we got. Like the outside shooting. We looked like a team playing it's second game as we didn't finish either half, and that cost us the game. I ain't excited, but this group could be good if they progress properly. That will fall on the coaching staff.
