But the day wasn't a complete loss due to the commitment of Ntambwe.
At the end of that article in the R-J, is the following sentence: “There also could be other roster changes, though the amount of turnover after the season is expected to be less than most recent years.”
But who do we think will transfer out after this season? Obviously, it’s not going to be the mass exodus that occurred after the debacle of the hiring of our new coach. And last year’s team was so bad that aside from JoJo and Clyburn, there wasn’t much that anyone wanted to return.
But this season is quite different. We have the makings of a quality team, if we can hold on to some key pieces, while adding some good newcomers. Incoming freshmen, and transfers.
However, currently, as the article notes, we have our full complement of scholarships. But everyone expects McCoy to declare for the draft. We don’t know about Juiston. Again, unlike previous years, I believe they are the only two that can consider the jump to the “next level”.
But what about transfers? Will Djordiije continue to be satisfied with his role as practice player? I don’t foresee him ever cracking the line-up. It seems quite apparent that Anthony Smith has played his last game for the Scarlet-and-Gray.
What about Dembele. He’s an extremely likable guy, but as Diong’s star has risen, Chieckna’s has descended proportionately. They’ve said it’s due to injury (concussion), but I have my doubts. Will he be satisfied as the third option in the paint? Or perhaps he will really become effective. Marvin Menzies has the reputation of a big man's tutor. Given time, can he mold both Diong and Dembele into quality low-post player? That would give us some real depth down low.
Let’s consider Hardy. Will he be patient enough to bide his time, waiting to become the starting PG for the Rebels? I believe I read somewhere that CMM has his eye on an experienced transfer to become the floor-general ala Jordan Johnson. Or perhaps he was talking about Robotham, listed below. I'm not certain, but either way, how does that sit with Amauri? He’s a talented kid and might think that paying his dues in 2017-18 was sufficient. I don’t know.
Am I correct that the following three players comprise our redshirts? Nick Blair 6’5” 200-lb jr forward transfer from Idaho, Ben Coupet, 6’7” 185-lb soph forward from Simeon Career Academy in Chicago, and the previously mentioned Noah Robotham, 6’1”, 170 lb senior PG transfer from Akron.
I’m just curious what our Rebels will look like next season. We’ve turned a corner from the disaster that TK-M and the Board of Regents and boosters left us with last year. It’s effectively year one of the Marvin Menzies tenure. I’m hoping we will get exponentially better in year two. By year three, I’m expecting to battle for the Mountain West title..
Go Rebels!
