Lobos vs Rebels game thread and link

Only a few years ago we would see hundreds of post for every game, but the politics of UNLV has changed things. Now the arena is empty and almost nobody cares. Maybe they should rethink the vaccine BS soon? I am still curious how many people would show up if the vaccine rule didn't exist? How many people came to games two years ago?

There are 6 factors that come to mind for our state of attendance…

1 - Winning cures all and we haven’t exactly been lighting it up in the win column since Rice left, and even then we were sliding downhill, albeit with awesome recruits and some big wins in the Rice era, just too much variability. Hurts a lot

2 - VGK support is more the pulse of the town and to a degree has some of the same passion/trendiness we used to have. Hurts us more

3 - Raiders are another competitive value for eyeballs. Hurts us more

4 - With COVID having unlv classes on line and off campus for a period of time, it feels like the student body lost their on campus identity. Hurts us some more

5 - old school die hard rebel fans are aging and the propensity of replacing with new blood is nearly nonexistent. Hurts in many ways, but specifically nostalgia

6 - vax attendance rules. I’m pro vax but this policy has shot ourselves in an already injured and gangrene foot. Hurts more…

I don’t think we’re Polaroid or Smith & Corona but we’re much closer to them then we are Tesla or Apple

Isn't the general belief that this is an NSHE thing?

Edit: genuine question. I'm not sure. Cant imagine that UNLV wouldn't have wanted that to be super obvious but there's nothing obvious in their messaging.

Yeah. I don’t think it’s UNLV at all. I think it’s UNLV following the rules that have been put in place. I can’t really blame UNLV for it.

2 thoughts from this clip vs. New Mexico

1. Great play! Reminds me of some of the old school Rebels games

2. Nobody is in the stands. I mean NOBODY! PLease get rid of the vaccine mandate for game attendance

I had an entire section to myself for most of the first half. It was actually pretty great. A family of like 8 or 9 people Spanish-speakers showed up. An older teenager or late young 20-something was really excited and trying to get the parents and younger siblings(?) Into it and was explaining stuff about the game and about the tradition.

Made me smile to see someone well under the average age of UNLV fans who care... care.

I would for sure x2

Can you imagine if we landed Jorge Gutierrez from Findlay Prep? We wiffed hard on that one. That one hurts to this day..

We get Jorge, we don’t get Oscar. I think that’s how it fell with our scholarship situation. It’s an “understandable” whiff because Oscar gave us four solid years. He wasn’t over the top great, but he was steady and hell, didn’t he take us to four straight appearances in the tourney? Or 3 of 4? Regardless of what it was, he was an integral part of a solid, not spectacular, foundation.

I really believe the vax mandate has hurt UNLV a lot more than others on this site think it has hurt, but will agree that VGK ticket sales do hurt ($40-100 per ticket), and Raider ticket sales ($150 plus) to far less of a degree. Within my business dealing I am involved with a lot of people who in the past purchase UNLV basketball tickets who would still be going to games if the vaccine mandate was not in place. Some of them had the vaccine but will not go because other people in their group have not, some people based on principle, and some cases where they will not get the vaccine like me. I would buy tickets on a regular basis, but with the new rules, they have pushed me and my younger son out of attending their games when only a few years back we were really big fans, my son now doesn't really have much of an interest anymore.

This is my feeling about what needs to change:

The first thing is the team must continue to play like they did against New Mexico and continue to win games.

Second remove the vaccine mandate which is fully the fault of UNLV and has nothing at all to do with the idiot Governor. The AD Erick Harper is who put this in place, which is more proof that we have another TKM type running the UNLV athletic department now!

"We are committed to the health and safety of our Rebel community," said UNLV Interim Director of Athletics Erick Harper. "After much thought and reviewing all feedback, we have decided to require vaccinations to attend UNLV basketball games at the Thomas & Mack Center for this season. The best way to protect yourself and others from this virus is to be fully vaccinated and we encourage all to get vaccinated if they haven't already done so. Having a fully vaccinated audience will also allow fans to experience the games without wearing masks."

Third is to go after the bulk of the fans who purchase the lower priced tickets. The entire top section of the arena and about 40% of the lower section was full of fans that would not have the budget to go to more than a couple of Raider games a year, or a hand full of Vegas Knights games. In order to keep or bring back these fans, UNLV will need to stop selling their tickets at prices that are far above the rest of the MWC and maybe considering cutting all prices across the board in half so they are competitive with the prices of other Mountain West Conference programs. UNLV is far from an elite program and can no longer act like they have a Gucci row and elite fans!

Read my earlier reply, the current AD is the ass who on his own put the vaccine restriction in place, so UNLV is 100% to blame for the restriction! Harper already started running the TKM course while he was the acting AD!

Remember when Findlay Prep was up by 50 points? Gutierrez chases after a loose ball and gets a concussion.

Gotta say disagree and go with hard whiff. Gut ended up being offensive and defensive player of the year in the Pac 12 at Cal. Took his team to the big dance.

Overall, I wasn’t too thrilled with Bellfield. He wasn’t a turnover machine. Wasn’t an explosive defender. Wasn't flashy and was your typical Lon Kruger player. No problems off the court..

flash forward, 12 years later..No Findlay Prep basketball, UNLV basketball at rock bottom.

We had some great basketball talent in the valley back then.

The Findlay Prep basketball games were very high value. 10 dollars to see future NBA players at high school level. The talent level was ridiculous.

I didn’t know that UNLV played last night until I heard a guy on local radio here in SD mention that he watched the game a minute ago, so I jumped on here to see who won and what people were saying. I haven’t been to a game in a few years, I used to have season seats despite living in SD. Politics or vaccine rules don’t keep me away, it keeps me away from these forums but not going to games. Fortunately I can wake up every day and not care about politic, it doesn’t change my life one way or the other I can do whatever I want whenever I want so all of this bullshit doesn’t phase me one way or the other, I feel bad for those that let ot consume their lives. I don’t think about it, I don’t talk about it and I don’t worry about it, and I don’t go on daily rants on these forums.

The only reason I don’t go to games is that the product sucks. I want UNLV to be good but they aren’t, in fact it’s a complete shit show..

I’ve moved on from UNLV, I can’t ever get rid of my diploma it will always say UNLV, but I can spend my money and travel elsewhere. I went to 6 Oregon FB games this season and am gojng to a BB in 2 weeks in Eugene. Why the **** would I travel to watch the shit product that UNLV runs out onto the field or court every week?

Yesterday, was an alright game. Offensively, I think Kruger ball is tough to watch. When we’re not overmatched by a more superior athletic team, ie SDSU we’re about top 130 team.

The Alleyoop dunk was probably the most exciting thing I ever saw this year for the Rebels. Lol, the guy barely made it. I’ll take that anyday over a layup.

I hope the rest of the MWC is as bad as UNM.

I like what Kruger is trying to do. He’s not here to coast around like the previous 2 coaches.

UNLV shot itself in the brain. You had the greatest product in college history 30 years ago and they destroyed it out of jealousy.

I am just not wired this way.
UNLV is my identity. Rancho High is my identity. I didnt go to Gorman. I didn't go to Columbus or Dayton, despite being born near their respective universities.
I have friends that also graduated UNLV. They are VGK fans. They do not care about UNLV and have no pride in UNLV.
I don't blame you for not having any close connection to UNLV or collegiate pride: UNLV doesn't care about it either. And I'm not talking AD. I'm talking the state and executive leadership of the college itself. Interestingly, Reno has far more alum with pride than we ever will.
Its saddening and its frankly one of the biggest factors for why we are in the situation we are. Its not TKMs fault. Its not DRF fault. Its not even our happless coaches' fault.
Its a systemic leadership fault at the state level and UNLV admin.

I'll never root for another school. **** that. I'd rather die.

You went to Rancho, meaning your grew up in LV or at least HS years, I assume you also still live in LV. So I totally get that. I didnt grow up in LV, I moved to LV for college, I lived there about 10 years total, 4 for college, left for 2, then back for about 6 years. I left for good in 2002 so Ive been gone a long time in April it will be 20 years. If I still lived in LV Id go to games and Id still be heavily involved. In 2002 I moved to Oregon, bought FB season tickets the day I got there and have kept them ever since although I only lived there for a year. After that year I lived in Seattle for 5 years where I had UW FB season tickets, then moved to San Diego, when I got to SD I bought UNLV BB tickets and went to a lot of games, when I lived in LV for those 10 years I went to every game FB and BB (well most every game). But as the years go by and the product got worse, it was very easy to disconnect. In general as much as I love sports they arent as big in my life as they once were and to be honest UNLV sports being so bad probably has had a hand in that (Oregon losses dont hurt, UNLV losses at one time hurt a lot, not so much now because the games never really mean much). Ive been to every UNLV tourney game since 1990, there probably arent a ton of people that can say that, but it sure seems like a long time ago since the last one of those games, during that time that UNLV hasnt been to a tourney game Ive been to every one of Oregon's tourney games with the exception of last year. The funny thing is, is when we lost to Cal in San Jose, Oregon was there as well in a different region. I went to their game the next day and that started my streak of going to Oregon tourney games, in those years Ive been to a few sweet 16's and a final four. Im a sports fan so if UNLV wont get me there at I can at least enjoy a school that will. I have a brick on the wall of the UNLV BB practice facility with my wife's and my name on it, like the name on my diploma that will never be removed.
