Im 100% positive Dave is a smart guy and understands from the book basketball offense and defensive strategy and plays. I'm sure he teaches in his style, I'm completely convinced he presents well in recruiting is clear and concise and personable in a very attractive way to recruits and parents.
In terms of basketball as a player Dave was a less athletic Barry Cheney I would say Austin Starr but Dave was nowhere as good of a shot he was an unathletic decent shooter who more then likely made it to UNLV as a back door favor for other purposes.
He's not a fighter he didn't grow up in a desperate situation he may be hungry in his own way but he's very mentally weak in the spotlight no everything isn't always "terrific" the dumb look on his face when the game tightens or the play calling or substitution patterns or his flat out affect when the games get tough is just exactly what we saw in his playing career he was an end of the game when it was a 30 point blow out player. He doesn't have the swagger, the confidence, the moxy to instill in his team, He is not a leader and that is evident by the attitude of this team and every team we've seen him coach, it's evident by the transfers, it's evident by when the going gets tough.
Simply put he's a book guy, he's not a Tarkanian who grew up desperate and had to make it he's not a player that had to win a game ever in his life, he's simple he's vanilla he's soft and hence the teams he leads are exactly what he is and you can expect no different he's not a Caliparu, he's not a Billy Donovan, he's not a coach who grew up desperate for success.
He's a deer in the headlights and it is apparent the cars about to hit him, we need a change maybe not a smarter guy because we may not find that but a tougher guy a fighter someone with true fight in them that desperately Wills their way in life or in the games that can't stand losing to the core not some Gee wiz apple pie everything is terrific guy.
I have seen this movie and the ending is the same I have been around this program for too many years and watching this repetitive cycle is unbearable we need some Fire and despite what anyone argues that comes from the leader and Dave Rice will never be that because he's never had to be in his life.
I'm sure the team will rally and win a few games but I'm also sure when the MWC tourney rolls around or another tough challenge we will see that same stupid look the same weak play calling the same confusion and the same result.
