While I was at the game, I kept thinking that SDSU was SO much better than us when possessions went deep into the shot clock. I thought that was one of the biggest factors in determining the outcome of this game. So I went back and re-watched the game and made note of every possession where the shot clock (or game clock) got under 7 seconds for either team. The results were pretty astounding.
UNLV
14 Possessions
4 Points
6 Turnovers
2/11 Field goals
0/0 Free throws
SDSU
11 Possessions
20 Points
2 Turnovers
6/10 Field goals
7/7 Free throws
I think you can draw a lot of conclusions from these numbers (no go-to guy, no go-to play/set, no calm under pressure, good SDSU defense, bad offense etc.) but the numbers themselves are pretty incredible. We lost by 15. There are many ways you can splice the box score to show the difference between these two teams, but for me, it was all about who could perform in crucial moments, and who withered under pressure.
FYI, the possessions were as follows:
UNLV
FIRST HALF
- Zimm made long 2-point shot (+2)
- TO, Zimm stripped
- Zimm made layup off OReb (+2)
- Shot clock violation ("SCV") on McCaw drive
- McCaw misses WIDE OPEN 3-pointer
- Seagears misses deep 3-pointer
- Nwamu misses 3-pointer
- TO, Seagears travel
- McCaw misses open corner 3-pointer
SECOND HALF
- TO, throw away inbounds pass
- SCV, McCaw shot blocked
- SCV, Poyser airball 3-pointer
- Zimm misses driving layup, DM Oreb, DM misses jumper off glass
- Nwamu missed difficult layup
SDSU
FIRST HALF
- Missed jumper, Spencer tip-in as half expires (+2)
SECOND HALF
- Hemsley made open reverse layup (+2)
- SCV, missed long 3-pointer
- Kell made DEEP 3-pointer (+3) ... huge play ... made it 37-33 instead of 34-33
- Allen drives and makes short shot in lane (+2)
- Hemsley drives and draws foul on Zimm, makes 2 FT (+2)
- SCV
- Shephard makes layup (+2)
- Kell misses 3-pointer, they get OReb despite foul on Seagears; make both FT (+2)
- Kell drives and draws foul on Zimm, makes 2 FT (+2)
- Pass to Spencer, who makes layup, and-1, makes FT (+3)
Note, this does not include first 4 minutes if the game, which I can't watch back because of previous game running long.
