I think that is pretty much what I said. Strong arm but you never know where it’s going. See Spilotro above, if USC wanted him as a QB he wouldn’t be here.
Didn’t they want JT at TE?

Some guys can play the game but they don’t excel at the position they want but they still have all the tools to play the game. QB is so highly specialized.

Hell, didn’t even somebody like Stanton have value defensively?

Not sure if I am recalling correctly but JT may have been brought in as a qb but switched over after it was apparent he would not play that position there. Back in that era USC was always nabbing some big time high school QB’s.

I wanted him to pull double duty with hoops. He’d have been a small forward for some decent teams. Don’t know that he would have started. Certainly wouldn’t have beaten out Marion and after that... we got Lou K, but he was hurt... I’m having trouble remembering the roster from JT’s time... CRich was a SF (a big for Spoon), we played a lot of 3 guard offense so that SF slot would have been filled by maybe Brotherson and JLew during JT’s time... so yeah, he’d probably get some minutes...

Schools like USC take all the top talent they can collect, then decide if and where those players would be used. I believe USC wanted Randal Cunningham as a DB. A lot of extra wide receivers get recruited by schools who want their speed at DB.

Two of the QBs that were buried behind Carson Palmer on the depth chart at USC did switch positions, but Thomas was never willing to, even when NFL teams wanted him to...

Despite Thomas' transfer, USC has 3 quarterbacks with starting experience on its roster. Sophomore Carson Palmer started the last 5 games of 1998 after junior Mike Van Raaphorst was the starter in Troy's first 8 contests of 1998. Senior John Fox started there all of 1997, but has been moved to linebacker this spring after not seeing any action at quarterback last season. Also, Quincy Woods, who was a reserve quarterback in 1996 and 1997, was switched to wide receiver in 1998 and he currently is competing for playing time there.

At 6-foot-4, 240 pounds and with speed and the ability to elude tacklers, Thomas had what the Jets and other interested teams were seeking in a tight end. Thomas saw himself as nothing other than a quarterback.

"I don't see why I should play another position," he says. "I can throw every route. I'm a good quarterback, I can do whatever I need to do.

Partially because of his unwillingness to play another position, Thomas went undrafted in 2003.
