UNLV President Len Jessup is facing pressure to leave his post amid concerns about his handling of issues at the university’s dental and medical schools, among other things, according to several sources with knowledge of the situation.

University insiders say that Chancellor Thom Reilly recently gave Jessup a week to either resign or face termination proceedings. Some board members have signaled that they are willing to hold a “personnel session” on Jessup — which can be called if at least five regents agree to do so and could include a vote to fire him if a majority of regents on the board agree.

Jessup did not respond to requests for comment from The Nevada Independent on Tuesday about the situation.

Multiple sources confirm that Reilly evaluated Jessup in January and raised numerous issues with him, including practices at the dental school and fundraising and management at the medical school. When little improvement was seen, sources said, the regents prepared to hold a personnel session but Reilly told the board he would handle the situation. Jessup’s resignation announcement is expected any day, and he is expected to leave by the end of the semester.

Reilly himself declined to comment.

Regents have recently raised concerns that the estimated cost of building UNLV’s new medical school has exceeded expectations, rising to $232 million from an initial minimum estimate of $100 million, and also that fundraising has fallen short of expectations.

The news that Jessup’s job is in jeopardy comes shortly after the university announcedthat a dental faculty member had been reusing devices on patients that the manufacturer specified were only for single use. The faculty member has since left, and the university says it’s not aware that patients are at any increased risk of getting a disease, but they’ve informed 184 patients about the situation and said they can be put on a disease testing plan if they want.

Jessup started as president of UNLV in January 2015. Previously, he was dean of the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona.

To add another:

https://www.reviewjournal.com/news/...-new-opportunities-amid-reports-of-departure/
UNLV President Len Jessup announced Wednesday that he will begin job hunting.

The announcement came after reports that he is being forced out of his job.

“Recent media reports about my pending departure are misleading,” he said an email sent to the campus community. “It’s no secret that a few regents and I have not always agreed on the direction of UNLV under my leadership.”

Most recently, Jessup came under fire at a board of regents meeting for the rising cost of UNLV’s new medical school. Also, last week, Regent Trevor Hayes questioned the university’s handling of its dental school and a dentist who reused a single-use dental implant device on patients.

“Over the last several weeks, I had conveyed to Chancellor Thom Reilly that the governance structure makes long-term sustainability for any president challenging,” Jessup said. “I continue to be passionate about UNLV and all our initiatives, but expressed to him my intent to begin looking at other opportunities.”

Jessup is in the third year of a five-year contract.

I have seen that a couple of large donors said they would pull their donations if they let him go, just shows they didn't give a shit about the school, but they have ignored the fact that he made his job political, and ignored doing his real job, as well as the number of people who had dropped their support of UNLV due to his politics..

No matter which political party you back, this job should not be involved in politics, and instead should be to improve UNLV as an education institute.

Can someone fill me in on Jessup's politics? I agree that his job should be apolitical. I'm just curious.

I understand this is political, and the moderators may want to remove this response if they believe they need to, but I am only responding to the question and nothing more.

He pushed for UNLV to become a sanctuary school.
He openly attacked President Trump and called him an idiot.
He has allowed school professors to openly threaten president Trump on several occasions as part of their class room instructions (caught on tape).
He has allowed professors to harass conservative students as part of class room instructions (caught on tape)

He attacked the NLV police department in writing on twitter and other social media sites, after they were on the UNLV campus because a member of BLM, who had an event on the campus, said that they had been harassed by the NLV police. The problem is it later came out that the BLM member had totally lied and they had never been anywhere near their event which ended before they were even on campus, and that they had been doing their training on campus for over 40 years without any issues. Jessup never apologized even when he found out it wasn't true.

We need a campus President that stays out of politics from either side and makes thing impartial for all students from any political party.

If this is all true, and I don’t know that it is, this ain’t the type you want running an institution of higher learning. Can’t have a PC hard line lib trying to dictate freedom of thought and expression at a university.

Just like our mascot was “too racist”.

I don't think it was multiple professors "threatening" Trump. The one lady blamed the Oct. 1 shooting on Trump and that was caught on tape.

And the professor that harassed the conservative students did resign.

Still, the sanctuary school, North Las Vegas PD/Black Lives Matter issue, changing the school newspaper, all of those things are definitely political. It seems like this is pretty much just like every other liberal university though. As much as I hate it, I don't think it is cause for Jessup to be fired. But if he is, I won't really care.

He's sharpening up UNLV's PAC 12 profile.

It was multiple prof's. I know for sure it included one history prof and also a women's studies prof. My son is currently in an English class where the prof. has openly attacked conservative students, he has just learned to keep his mouth shut.

I really hate hearing that. I didn't know things like that were going on. Is UNLV trying to become a snowflake factory?

My concerns are about what happens if Jessup is fired. First and foremost are all the reported donations that are being rescinded. Last figure I read was 3 donors, $46 million dollars. My 2nd concern is what will happen to our Athletics Department and our bid to move to a P5 conference. Jessup seemed all in on funding & supporting the AD to move us forward. The time a search for a new president would take could set us back from concentrating on the thing's UNLV needs to improve on as well time it takes to prepare a solid presentation to earn the invitations. We also run the the risk of getting a new President who doesn't see the importance of athletics to UNLV's future. The final concern I have is the damage this public pissing contest is having and will have on the university's reputation. Why the chancellor and regents felt it necessary to take their dispute to the press I will never understand. Had they kept it in house, we might have been able to save at least the two endowments that were not tied to Jessup's employment. This is starting to look like the coaching fiasco all over again. I didn't and don't agree with Jessup's politics, as discussed above, but I thought at least he was a solid fundraiser for the university, now I don't know what or who to believe.

Couldn't agree more.

But to me, Jessup is as much to blame as any of this. Part of his job is dealing with a BOR, and he knew that some of them don't support him 100%. That is part of his job and he gets paid big money to deal with it. So far the rumors of him being fired were pretty speculative at best.

But what does Jessup do at first sign of media reports? He makes a public statement that he will be looking for a new job. He was also the one who wanted a review after 3 years. Now that review is happening and it looks to me like he is using it as an excuse to cut ties with UNLV early.

Really, what were the odds of him being fired if he made a public statement that he is "committed to UNLV 100% while serving as President, that he has made great success in some areas, and will work to improve other ares, and will work with the BOR and appreciate any feedback and findings of this review, and will support whatever decision they make in the best interests of the University."

I wouldn't be surprised if he already has a job lined up somewhere else, or is playing UNLV and the BOR by using the fundraising losses as leverage for a raise.

At this point, he has no choice but to go.
