I was just thinking a lot of professional teams and programs like to honor past players that have been great in their time and were fun to watch.

I think last season we honored the 84-85 team but we need something more permanent. There’s a ton of space in Allegiant and plenty of stuff to put more unlv signage up. Put Randall’s jersey in the rafters, create a wrap that commemorates the bowl games we’ve been in, commemorate John Robinson a HOF coach that saved UNLV football, photo of the iconic Payne catch at ASU etc.

Just because UNLV was not winning regularly in the past doesn’t mean we had nobody’s passing through and it’s also for the long time fans who were there.

I just think there’s a lot we could do. I mean someone walks into stadium and sees a signage that says UNLV beat Arkansas in the LV Bowl. “Holy cow, UNLV beat a SEC team in a bowl?!”

/Offseason rant over.

Great idea and worth UNLV exploring. I wouldn’t go so far as to say the Raiders would never allow greater UNLV recognition. The relationship has improved greatly since Sandra became Pres; not saying it’s perfect but before Sandra it was downright hostile. Sandra recognizes the value of having a close relationship with UNLV. It undoubtedly benefits/protects the Raiders in many ways.

Whether it is brilliant or meager, you have a history - recognize it.

While Ickey Woods had a really great season at UNLV, I believe he only played one year at UNLV, and there are other players who had a bigger overall impact while at UNLV.
True it is more about what he became and did afterwards though he was a major reason for what was the best season in history until last year. Is Shawn Marion's number retired? If no then I guess I can see why Ickey isn't either.

I was wrong, he was at UNLV 4 years, but he sucked the other three years. I was at UNLV and didn't even remember him playing in the games before his great 1987 year. As for his being a major reason for the best season at UNLV (1984), only if you mean he kept the bench warm that season. He had zero to do with that season with a grand total of 4 yards rushing, while Kirk Jones was the RB starter and had a total of 1128 yards mostly rushing! I would retire Kirk Jones jersey 10 out of 10 times before even considering Ickey Woods. Woods had a total of 2061 yards in 4 years at UNLV, two of those riding the bench behind Kirk Jones, and Kirk Jones had a total of 3,503 yards. Ickey Woods was the ninth leading rusher at UNLV in history.

I would also take Mike Thomas at UNLV as without question the greatest RB to ever play at UNLV with 3,149 yards in two seasons at UNLV, and the most yards ever for a single season. He played at Oklahoma for two years before transferring to UNLV. I would consider Charles Williams, because he is the only player over 4,000 yards, but he had six seasons to do it compared to everyone else in four seasons.

I would also consider Tim Cornett who had 3,733 rushing yards in four years.

In receivers I would consider Ryan Wolfe who was at the same level as Ricky White in that he would catch everything around him, and he was the all time leader in passes caught 283 and total yards 3,495. If Ricky White had played 4 years, he would have likely caught him with 218 catches caught and a total of 3,143 yards.

Ricky White III and Jackson Woodard would definitely be future jersey retirement players in my opinion. Normally I would only considering a player if they stayed at UNLV 4 years, but these two along with Mike Thomas are exceptions to that rule!
