Sad to have a player like that leave. If he stays healthy, he has the ability to play on Sundays. What will it take to retain this kind of talent? I think it’s multiple of things. And if Jacoby could comment - that would be great- I’m all about being candid.

I don't know that G5 schools can do anything.

However it's not all doom and gloom though.

The flipside is this.

Lots of P5 players will be transferring down to get playing time as well.

No way UNLV lands a recruit like Harrison Bailey out of HS. But guys want to play, and sometimes their only path to playing time is to transfer.

A lot of 3* guys that UNLV would have been happy to get in the past that landed at P5 schools will hit the portal when they can't beat out 4 and 5 star kids.

Initially I thought the portal was a death sentence for G5 schools.

I'm not so sure now. Not saying it helped G5 schools more or even evened the playing field, but I do think the talent will remain about the same overall..

Add Ricky White to the list. Rivals ranked him as a 4 star out of high school and it came down to Michigan State or Tennessee. UNLV doesn’t even get a look out of high school. But lands him as a sophomore. I have read interviews with players entering the portal and their perspective changes. The right fit and playing time plays a big role in their decision making and they no longer have to sit out.

Also, I am curious as to how good is rb Aiden Robbins who transferred in from Louisville. He had offers from schools in the Big, SEC and ACC coming out of high school.

Exactly.

Like I said it doesn't even the playing field, but I think it keeps things at least status quo despite the landscape changing...

To use a term that makes no sense.

Same difference...

A birdie in the pen told me a defensive end named “Plant” from TCU will turn heads. Never seen or heard of the guy.

anybody know who he is talking about?

gonna watch game at Crown & Anchor or most likely at PT’s pub across Maryland/Trop sober and NOT stoned.

I agree 100% when it comes to both football & basketball.. I think basketball can get back to the Rice days, getting 4/5 star guys/high level transfers, reaching the NCAA tourney as the expectation, although it’s going to take some results & time to get back there again.. Although I do think football is a different animal compared to basketball, Rebs football has a lot going for them right now.. Obviously not record/history wise, but we have a lot of stuff most G5 programs don’t have.. Bright/flashy lights (LV), new facilities, Allegiant stadium.. We don’t deserve any of it, based on the programs history/results.. But we have these benefits.. & Like you alluded to, it should/will help us out, and already has in some fashion to entice those recruits & transfers that would never have considered us to come and play here..

Not saying it translates to the results we want or turn us into a powerhouse by any means, but we damn sure are in the best position to get the players/results we want than we ever have been in the programs history.. Just need to get the ball rolling forward and gain some momentum, I can see a stable program establishing at some point..

Aiden Robbins is a dawg IMO.. Small sample size based on the season opener/FCS opponent.. But he’s a power back who flashes pretty good speed for how big/strong he is.. Also, has great hands out of the back-field for screens and getting in the flats.. Time will tell as we go against tougher competition, but I think he is the real deal for G5 level ball..

Solid player.

From what I saw last year, B. Scott (who's injured this year) will be better when he gets healthy...

There's a lot of solid talent sitting on sidelines in P5 country. The way kids are today (probably always been, impatient) a transfer to UNLV is like being sent down to Triple AAA. Get some playing time showcase your skills the facilities allow you to do that.
We'll lose guys like Windmon on their senior year you see that trend already. Standouts from lesser divisions will transfer for their senior to test their skills and improve NFL draft outlook.
Bottom line just win Vegas loves a winner. They'll stay once they know they can run the town once they graduate.

On a side note.. Jacoby Windmon’s stats for the day..

7 total tackles
4 sacks
1 FF

Ya it was against W. Michigan, but that’s a hell of a stat line, I don’t care who you are playing.. Really sad he left as well.. Think he gets drafted on day 2 or 3, would have been the 1st Rebel to get drafted in how long? Just started my fandom for Rebel football last season, diehard BBall fan.. Curious who/how long it’s been?

It is almost an advantage to get these players on the bounce back when "transferring down".
First they have already had a big slice of humble pie, they can learn from potentially really good programs practicing against top notch talent, and most importantly, they burn their free transfer. Meaning that they will likely stay.
You almost don't want the top talent right out of high school since they will likely leave.
Basketball is a little different since freshmen are more likely to make an impact, but even so the best freshmen often are as good as the best upperclassmen as a college basketball player even if they may have the NBA talent. Watching Bennett getting owned by an undersized white dude at northern Iowa comes to mind.

Overall, I think the transfer portal raises the talent level of G5 schools. That being said it does suck to lose players like Windmon. The Windmons of the world all transfer for different reasons, Level of competition and NIL being the main ones. In general it is going to take a P5 invite and NIL to keep those players.

We will gladly accept all SEC transfers. Just None from Vanderbilt. Lol.

Man just a tough break. I remember how high T Sanchez was on him went as far as saying he could play on Sundays. Tony S with Dougie B and Windmon carrying on his legacy.

Every time I see how he is doing at Michigan State, I want to slam my head into a wall! He may have been the best defensive player to have ever played for UNLV. He is dominating at Michigan State!
I'm happy for him. I'm looking forward to seeing if he can keep it up once the competition picks up (starting this week with Washington). If he does, you can't blame him for leaving for step up in competition.

Also, it sounds like he still loves and follows UNLV. He had to make a business decision that was in his own best interest. Can't blame him for that.

I thought Jacoby was white... how is that for being out of the loop?

tony Sanchez told me we Don’t have money when I took a hot yoga class with him back in 2018!
