Is anyone surprised by this?

I’m terms of continuity I’d love to have had a stud freshman stay for many years. But for this offense I think we found a better fit in dual threat Sluka. Hopefully it works out that way.
Speaking of continuity especially at QB is Sluka a 4'th or 5'th year senior. I know Haj is a 5'th year senior so I think Sluka should have an additional year due to the Covid rule.

Then you have Williams who threw for 2,597 yards, 19 TD's and completed 70% of his passes. I have no clue on Sluka v Williams and who should start. But based on experience IMO either could end up more effective than Maiava as a true freshmen.

When Porter asked Maiava specifics about dropback techniques and what he'd learned from other coaches, Porter says Maiava offered a confused look in response.

Maiava had a lot to learn, so they sat down together in Porter's office and sketched out a development plan. Fortunately, as Porter came to understand, Maiava could pick up concepts the first time he was told. He just needed the confidence to use them.
Man team Maiva made sure that unlv staff looked incompetent.

In spite of that success, Maiava suggests there were disagreements about "decisions made for his development" at UNLV. Tautofi, a self-described "pioneer" of the name, image and licensing space, says he was the first to suggest Maiava enter the transfer portal.

1) It also makes his "self described pioneer of NIL" uncle look bad. He's the one who spent time with him the most. Not just his 1 year at UNLV.

2) If you read between the lines, this gives the tiniest of peeks behind the vultures in NIL. College football is going to eat itself unless there are some restrictions on NIL and some reasonable transfer rules. He was 100% recruited back to Hawaii by his NILX uncle. It is one more reason why many teams backed away. He wasn't worth the headache. Big Dave got involved because of Tautofi. That's fine, but Maiava was pushed to USC once he made the decision to go to GA. He didn't have a real choice and NILX and Big Dave are the two parties reaping the benefits while Jordan sits and waits.

3) Kid is 19 and can make his own decisions, but when family is involved he's mind is being made up for him.

4) I've moved on. It is what it is.

Correct. A starter has been chosen, won’t be known until game day.

Based on absolutely nothing, but my feeling is that it is Sluka.
How about it being based on Sluka being the highly talented and proven playmaker who passed on 2 SEC schools and about 50 other D1 schools to come star at UNLV? Good enough for me and I’m sure that relates in practice.

He didn’t pick UNLV to sit on the bench. Something would have had to have gone really sideways for him not to be the starter.
