Coastal Carolina is rated # 22. Been FBS for FOUR years. Located in Conway, South Carolina. ANY reason we aren't at least in the middle of the MWC is an excuse. ANY reason.

I have said it numerous times before if Bill Snyder can do it at K State, Not once but Twice! It can surely be done at UNLV we just need the Tark of Football, I know easier said than done though.

You could add UTSA, Charlotte, Arkansas St., Wyoming, Buffalo, Tulane, La Tech and on a lower level E Washington and South Dakota State are examples of sustained success.

Why can’t UNLV do the same with all its amenities.. there’s something sinister going on in the background!

We are cursed!

General apathy. Honestly. From administration to fan base. Football was never a priority. Band aids over band aids.

There is no such thing as cursed. What has happened is we have hired a string of coaches who can't coach. Coastal has only been an FBS school for four years. Has the fifth lowest paid coach in the FBS. Has facilities that don't compare to even average FBS schools. Recruits from the same base as Clemson, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Auburn, Alabama etc. They have averaged 131st in recruiting for the pat 5 years and are 22nd ranked. The only way they win is with a head coach who can make it fun and can inspire better play than the talent would normally indicate. We will never win if we keep hiring coaches like our last three - no FBS head coaching success.

Players need to develop, once they are in the program.
UNLV’s football coaching staff needs a few of the coaches to be able to develop and make them better. It seems our players never get any better and the lack of Rebels in the NFL is a clue.

Cursed was sarcasm.

I agree with every word you said. Kinda.

San Jose State's guy doing well. And doesn't fit your criteria.

Yes we need a coach. But unless you have a few extra million laying around to donate to the hiring process, this is what we can expect.

That and the fact they probably weren't that many NFL caliber guys to begin with.

Some of UNLVs absolute best players over recent years, Bell, Brimmer, Cornett, D. Davis, D. Boyd, Lex Thomas didn't get drafted, or did and couldn't stick.

You can't coach 4.9 guys into 4.3 guys. You can't make Lexington Thomas 205 lbs instead of the 175 to 185 lb guy he was.

Arroyo is the third highest paid coach in the MW. You can look at pay scales in group of five schools and find over a dozen coaches who are maintaining at least a winning record for $500,000 less a year than Arroyo is getting now. I believe we could have had most any one of them for what we are paying now. $$ is an excuse. No excuses.

There are 100's of families in this town who can buy out Arroyo and not even feel a pinch. I wonder how many of them the UNLV President calls every week for a chat about the $$ situation in football.

My bet is NONE.

He should have one a week as his guest at a game.

Ok so where is the hiring process going wrong then?

Again, put San Jose's coaches resume up against Sanford or Hauck's. Hell put Norvell's in Reno against there and tell me it was better.

You either spend money to find a coach. Or you find the best candidate available.

We've missed. Plain and simple.

Well then they should step up. I've heard this talk for years.

Happens in basketball since Krueger.. Mystery money that never shows up.

Reality is, UNLV is still a young university. It doesn't have a lot of old money. It's a transient town where a lot of the money is with people from somewhere else and no ties nor cares about the state of UNLV athletics.

Create a winning tradition. Money somehow miraculously trickles in. See Cincinnati.

But that's the responsibility of the President and the AD. Bring a few of those folks on board.

Look. I don't have all the answers. It's likely I don't have any answers. But I am sick of people coming forward with reason after reason why we suck. When, in fact, the reasons are just excuses. Perhaps an excuse is acceptable if the mission is impossible. But dozens of teams prove it IS possible so all the reasons are just garbage excuses.

It could be my military background. But there comes a time when there is no excuse. We hired a H.S. coach for heavens sake. And people made excuses for that for years.

If I was President I would have had Arroyo in my office yesterday letting him explain to me why we are paying him millions and he couldn't see that Rogers was overwhelmed. Everybody in the stadium could see it. Why can't his players catch a ball thrown right to them : not once but 5 or 6 times. Why can't his "O" line prevent an FCS defense from collapsing on our QB every third play? Then get right in his grill and tell him you don't give a sh*t if he's in his second year - he's here to fix it. NO EXCUSES!!!!!!

Who is making excuses for him?

Absolutely cannot lose that game.

Saying the previous coaches resumes appeared good enough to get it done isn't making excuses.

I have no idea what the President or any of the AD's have done in regards to fund raising. Obviously hasn't been enough. But, like I said Vegas is transient. Unlv is a young school. No old money.

I guess we could hit up Guy Fieri from the Food Network.

Arroyo will either fix it or he won't.

On the plus side recruiting has been better than under any other staff. By a pretty substantial margin if you go by recruiting services.

Football isn't basketball, where 1 or 2 guys can change your fortunes (ok a stud QB maybe). Takes time to flip your roster.

I guess my hypothetical question would be, how many wins do you think any other coach in the MWC would get with our current roster starting with last year? 2 maybe 3? I don't know. Impossible to know really. Can't imagine anybody is undefeated.

Go the the "Let the excuses begin" string and it is full of excuses.

Improved recruiting without results, where have we seen that before, oh yeah in basketball two coaches ago. How did that work? We need a combination of good recruiting and good coaching with some coaches who can develop players for things to change in football. Who that is, I don’t know but it’s what we need.

He doesn’t have to be Nick Saban but if he was similar to Buffalo’s or even San Jose’s HC, that would be a start for us!

Ok.

I'll ask again.

Look at Sanford's resume or even Hauck's and tell me the San Jose coaches resume was better.

We've just missed. We can blame administration or whoever. That's fair. They've picked the coaches.

Sanford got close. His second to last year he went 5-7. There were three losses (I believe) UNLV had a lead heading into the 4th quarter. That team was actually pretty good and sadly maybe the best one we've had since Robisnson.

He backed into 5-7 his last year.

Had there been a real commitment to football when he was here would it have mattered? Don't know. But he wasn't wrong in his infamous 'lockeroom' rant. It just came off as sour grapes.

We're only heading into year 2 of Arroyo. Returns have not been great on the field.

He gets this year and probably next. Hopefully the improved recruiting starts to manifest itself or he could be out after what amounts to 2.5 seasons.

Worked better than the last five seasons. Fan attendance can show you that. And just overall interest, locally and nationally. And for less than half the price.

I think with FB, long term, short term - we are still going to be doomed to a similar fate as what we’ve seen. Maybe worse if the conference chasms increase more.

I wasn’t head over heels with Sanchez or Hauck … and I really wasn’t with Sanford either … but I think if each had 10 years here, Sanford would have been the best by quite a large margin. His sour grapes rant was mistimed, but right. UNLV has never made a strong commitment to football. JRob demanded more and got more, it seemed the most same page people were.

I think we have our QB. If 2 had started instead of 5 we win that game i think. Week 1 can be a little strange. Let's see how it goes but I'm not ready to write off the season.

Not saying fire Arroyo just yet but I am saying he better be more open to making “in game” adjustments like pulling Rogers or anyone else who’s play is obviously not effective.
