I Don’t Care What Happens…

I knew very little to nothing about who UNLV should hire… I mostly listened to voices here and took my cues there.

That this hire made all of you happy, made me happy, and that’s almost all I needed.

But the fact that UNLV has stepped up and invested and taken a serious approach to the program, is the biggest thing to me.

I don’t care if it somehow bombs… UNLV pushed the chips in and that’s all I care about.

Hate going down the road of “what might have been” because I always get irritated thinking about it, but that is very true. We were way ahead of Utah and TCU back then, so with some commitment, we would have been there with them. Hopefully it isn’t too late, but guessing it is.

I think we still have a shot at the Big12, otherwise they wouldn’t make this hire. The point of this hire is to take that next step.

I wonder what caused the change of heart, it seems like a few things. The Fertitta's getting them to hire Sanchez and them investing in the facility. The coincidence of the Raiders coming, giving UNLV a new stadium. Nailing the Odom hire and the following success. People starting to attend the games. It appears all of that culminated in Harper being able to lure Mullen who in turn said yes if you invest more in NIL. And because of all that it appears the school and maybe some boosters stepped up.

The amount of luck and good fortune as it would be to where we were to where we are...
1. Football complex funding
2. Allegiant
3. Odom randomly visiting UNLV 1 year before job opened
4. Odom being good at rebuild and fast
5. Mullen having his own visit for an injury while attending a ceremony in town
6. Finally Mullen being in right place at right time to just have a casual conversation with Harper on what he thought the school needed to do with its next coach...
Imagine had Odom waited a week and instead of Dan already being on campus for the ceremony and LV Bowl stuff he had gone home and we're trying to call him... might not have happened

There is no reason UNLV should be better then Boise, outside of Oregon, USC, UW, UNLV should be up there with the commitment to win, i am talking Basketball and Baseball too.

If UNLV will invest get all the boosters together, there is no reason within 3 years UNLV is not in Big 12, that's my stupid opinion, but the potential at UNLV is enormous, the facilites for top 3 men programs are already in place, now get the coaching, Football we have, get basketball and baseball going, this town will support them....

I saw many UNLV starter jackets back East, back in the day and that was Big East territory!

The sleeping giant is close to being fully awake, just need to keep the momentum going by firing Kevin next and then take a look at baseball!

Add to the allure of LV, its growing market size, UNLV being in the top 5 of G5 candidates to make a jump to a P4, and all you need is a commitment from UNLV and the right hires. “Potential” has been connected to UNLV for quite some time and it seems it’s finally being converted into results.
Getting MBB back to the top 25 should be very simple compared to FB. All it requires is a little booster support to hire the right coach and we’ll be dancing the following season. The tough part is the $$. Once that’s established there’ll be coaches lined up at Harp’s door.
I’m rather bullish on UNLV getting into a P4. The Mullen hire following two impressive seasons in both record and attendance moved the needle significantly. It’s getting the right kind of attention nationally. With commentators now speaking of UNLV as a legitimate program the Big12 has got to be looking at UNLV no longer as a potential add down the road but a school and market they need to be careful not to miss out on.

I don’t think it will bomb either. I think we’re in the “better late than never” stage… Vegas itself can’t be ignored and a true association with the city (not just bowl games and conference tourneys) will matter.

As it sits the Big 12 and ACC are already second tier and can’t rest on their laurels… moves have to be made and markets secured. If this move can continue the momentum that’s already begun it’ll make it a no brainer for the Big 12.

The past is the past. But this board was a bastion of 'kill the football program, we are a basketball school' for most of it's lifetime. I didn't see much disagreement with that sentiment. Anyone who disagreed and said FB should be a focused got pounded.

I'll freely admit that I was one of those people. I saw no hope in the program but I really underestimated the impact the new facilities would have. Barry Odom worked wonders too

In basketball we have over $100 million dollars in facilities. Come game time most of those seats aren't bringing in any money. That has to be fixed and you start by bringing in a coach that can coach and win.

This is true I was part of that but football and basketball were in completely different places then and basketball seemed close while football never. There was no path for football in our conference with our coaching if we had landed Urban Meyer at the beginning that sentiment would have been different.
