I can’t believe Reno already has 20 wins and is ranked. All because of the poor leadership at UNLV. They have gotten better. We have gotten worse. We might fall into 8th place on Wed night. Not good.
I have yet to watch the replay, but I have looked over the box score. A few things stand out. Of course I didn’t need a stat sheet to tell me that this was JoJo’s finest game of the season. Probably of his career at UNLV . But it’s an impressive line anyway. He played 39 of the 40 minutes. Hit 11 of 20 shots for 55%. That included 6-12 from beyond the arc. He also went 3-4 at the FT line. It all added up to a nifty 31 pts. In addition, he add 7 boards and 2 assists. Just when I was suggesting that his downside was starting to outweigh his upside. I guess he showed me! Keep showing me JoJo...
Who else?...Juiston in 35 minutes, chipped in 19, on his usual 9-11 (81%) shooting. Just an aside, I’m always slightly amused when a commentator sees Juice for the first time. They can’t believe how fricken’ good he is. We’ve known that from day 1. Ok back to his line. He picked up 12 rebounds to complete his, ho-hum, Just another double-double.
Mooring’s running mate in the backcourt, Jordan Johnson, almost matched him in time served, with 38 minutes. He put in 11 pts on 5-10 shooting. He grabbed 5 boards, and dished out 7 dimes. He was mostly pure point guard again. Obviously Jordy’s capable of big scoring games, but his value to this team, comes as an assist man. Setting up the others to receive the ball in situations that lead to success.
Of course our usual scoring leader found himself nailed to the bench in foul trouble. He managed to log 26 minutes. The time he put in was not productive at all, from the field. He was a sad 1-6. He was however, perfect from the FT line going 6-6. And he grabbed 8 boards, so he showed that he could still be of value, even when his shots are off. Although, considering how accurate he usually is, and that most of his shots come from around the rim, it’s a bit of a shock to see him shoot 17%. But it was obvious that UNR’s game-plan was to double and triple team Brandon. And they roughed him up pretty badly . He’d better get used to that if he has hopes of standing up to the animals that patrol the paint in the NBA, next year. A good reason to spend one more year in college? Mom?
The other Rebel with significant minutes was Amauri Hardy with 26 minutes. He had 8 points, 3 boards and 2 assists. He did most of his damage in the first half, and it was sorely needed at the time.
Nunu chipped in 6 points in 19 minutes of floor-time. Diong had just 3 points amd 2 boards in 9 minutes, due to foul trouble, as well. Together with Brandon, the 5-spot committed 9 fouls. But it worked.
And that was it. Kris Klyburn had one of his several, 0-4 games, and was a non-factor. Menzies has apparently lost all faith in Dembe. Anything else I might have to say will come after I re-watch the game. It’s a win to savor, for a day or so.
Then we must prepare for Wyoming. They will arrive at the T&M with a 17-8 record. More importantly they are 7-5 in MW play. That puts them squarely in our sights to move up in the conference standings, if we can defend the home court. They’ve won 5 of 6, so we must beware of a letdown after the emotional win in Divorcetown, USA.
Go Rebels!
